I tried to keep our grocery spending lower this week – which will give me some wiggle room in the budget to make some bulk purchases the next couple of weeks! We’re going to visit family and friends back in Michigan, and while we’re there I’m excited to go to my all-time-favorite Amish bulk foods store, as well as the “Honey Farm” where we buy raw honey.
For meat this week, I will be cooking up a turkey from the freezer (I always stock up around Thanksgiving when they go on sale – and I’m down to the last one!), as well as venison (thankful for a husband who loves to hunt!). We’ll be using milk from the freezer.

Do you ever drink your frozen milk or do you just use it for cooking? Also can you thaw milk and then refreeze it in smaller portions ( I was given some frozen milk)?

I live right where MI, IN and OH meet in the Angola, IN/Coldwater, MI area. There is an amish bulk food store called E&S Sales in Shipshewana, IN. It is AMAZING! When we go, they have cereal for 50 cents to 1 dollar on clearance. They generally have Jimmy Dean or Bob Evans sausage frozen for 1.50-2.50 a pound. We got some ‘bacon tips’ that were 1.50 a pound last time we went. It was totally like the ‘real’ bacon and super cheap. I lOVE it:D!

I don’t clip coupons anymore; it seemed like I could never hit that sweet spot of having a coupon and finding the item on sale. Reading through your shopping post and all the great deals you scored, it almost motivates me to try it again….

I SO wish all of you could live right next to Harris Teeter – they are the BEST! We moved here from MI last September (no HT in Michigan!), so it’s only the last 10 months that I have been completely spoiled by living within a few miles of one!!
Kris says
Wish we had a Harris Teeter in California! No double coupons here and if they occasionally do, only up to $1. Would love to make a haul like that!
Brigette says
See my comment right below – that was supposed to be to you. 🙂

Man, I wish we had a Harris Tester. Those are some good deals. We had a store in MO that doubled coupons but only up to a dollar. I don’t think any stores in Seattle double coupons.
Brigette says
I wish you had one too!!!

Where do you buy raw honey? I too would love to visit your bulk food store as I live in Michigan. Thank you for your post, you are inspiring!
Brigette says
We buy honey from J and D’s Honeybees: 13521 Allman Rd. Concord, MI, 49237. Phone # 1-517-524-6024. It is fabulous raw honey at the cheapest price I’ve ever seen. (We pay anywhere from $25-$35 a gallon, depending on time of year and how much we buy at once). It is a small operation – run by a couple in their backyard – so if you go, call to make sure they are there. We’ve been there many times over the past 5-6 years, and it is about as fresh and organic as you will ever find! I will let you know the info about the bulk foods store next week after I go there. It is within 15 minutes of the honey place. Even though I have been there many times over the years, I am not sure of the address (I just know how to get there ;)). Since it is an Amish place, they don’t have a website or even a phone number! But they have the best prices on things like 50lb bags of wheat kernels (I grind my own), Oats, bulk spices, etc. They also have lots of other things like fresh homemade cheese. There is also Glei’s orchard in the same area (they DO have a website) which is also one of my favorites. I stock up on 10lb bags of honeycrisp apples (I buy “seconds”) for around $5-6.

There is also a really good Mennonite Nulk food store called Country View Bulk Foods in Snover, MI. They do have a website that lists their address and phone number if you google if for the folks interested in a bulk food store in MI. It is a big store and they have great prices.

Wow!! Great job 🙂

you are so lucky that the stores double on coupons believe me here in Northern California there is no such thing; anyways great buys and enjoy your upcoming trip
Maria says
Yep, I’ve seen people talk about double and triple coupons for years — no such thing here. Ever. 🙁
Brigette says
I know I’m spoiled – and I wish all of you could live close to Harris Teeter – they are the BEST!
