Any recommendations for books a 5yo would like? My son is starting kindergarten in the Fall and I want to keep him engaged throughout the summer!
Thank you!

We read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks for my church book group this past year, and it really is a fascinating story.

Thank you for continuing this post… I continue to be blessed and encouraged by it. I hope you continue it! 🙂

I certainly plan to as it’s such a huge motivation for me. 🙂

I love that you read chapter books to your kids. I tried this recently with my three year old, I can tell she is ready because she is constantly bringing me some of my books from when I was younger, and she asks questions about the content and what is going on in the story. Unfortunately the books that I read don’t keep her interest, are there any recommendations for something exciting(What she keeps asking for)?
Tracy says
I would recomend the Magic Treehouse series. Every book is a new adventure and the books are lossley based on past historical events/time periods.
Andrea @the Distracted Housewife.com says
I am going to have to check those out at the library next time we go. Thank you, I love historical stuff and if it’s exciting it will float her boat as well. Thank you!

I try to find books that appeal to their interests and personalities. When my kids are around 3-4, I make sure that the chapter books I read are short and have lots of pictures in them. That seems to help keep them engaged, in addition to picking books that are in line with their personalities/interest.
Have you read Honey for a Child’s Heart? I get lots of book ideas from books like that, as well as from Pinterest. I request any that I think might work from the library and then I can always return them (without guilt since I didn’t pay anything!) if they aren’t a good fit.
Andrea @the Distracted Housewife.com says
Thanks Crystal! I will definitely be checking out Honey for a Child’s Heart next time I am at the library. I have tried picking out a few books at the library but they all ended up duds, either not enough pictures or didn’t really interest her. Hopefully I can get some good ideas from the book you recommended. Thanks again!

At 3-4, my son loved Stuart Little, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the original Pooh Series.
I also started having him listen to audio book recordings of classic books at that age during his quiet time because I could not handle that he had given up his nap :-). He would play with duplos or puzzles or look at picture books while listening to the 60-80 minute audiobook.
He tolerated more variety in those audiobooks than he would listen to me read aloud (probably because he was playing while listening, and he refused to do anything but sit on my lap when I was reading, so my read-alouds had to be more exciting).

I hope you’ll show us your embroidery project when you’re all done! I’d love to see it 🙂
I finished two books last week, which is a lot for me, but one of the books was so good that I couldn’t put it down! Thanks so much for your encouragement with reading…I have always been a big reader, but since becoming a mom, it sort of got put on the back burner. You have inspired me to read more 🙂
Crystal says
I definitely will! You can see a peek at it here: http://instagram.com/p/YLF6OlDz1y/

Are you and Kathrynne loving Number the Stars?? It’s one of my favorites. My students love it and I have a wonderful book study for it.
Crystal says
Yes! It’s a new-to-me book and we’re really enjoying it!

Hey! your running again! I assume your back is feeling better? I got into a real kick boxing classes mode a while back and then pulled something in my shoulder and had to take a month off from it. I look hilarious trying to keep up in class but it is so much fun. I am looking forward to getting back to it although I might wait a while longer as it is great outdoor workout weather right now so I have been biking and running more. Thinking I might even take my boys on a biking adventure soon. One that will involve a full day of biking followed by a night in a hotel (or 2 if they need to recover a bit) and then a full day biking back.
Crystal says
It *is* doing better and I’m so thankful! We signed up for a 5K in a few weeks and I can’t wait!

An idea to file away if the pain returns: I struggled for years with pain from running (back, neck, knee, forefoot) and was constantly trying expensive brands and orthotics to try to treat the problem. I found quite a bit of relief when I switched to “barefoot” running. I usually run in Vibrams, and I primarily wear either vibrams or vivobarefoot shoes the rest of the time. The transition period is long (go slooowly) because you must not only re-learn how to walk and run, but you have to strengthen muscles in your feet and calves that have atrophied from using supportive shoes, but, for me, it’s been worth it to have the pain disappear.
Crystal says
Thank you so much for this recommendation!

Sounds like you had a good week! I’m glad you got some rest!
I did ok on my goals last week. One of the things that really made my week was that I was able to help a friend of mine launch his new self-hosted blog. I have been wanting to help others with what I’ve learned about blogging so far, even though I’m still really new at it. So we got his site up and it’s looking great! That was just so fulfilling. 🙂

I’m late writing out my goals for this week, and I have to say that today doesn’t feel like it was all that productive. On the plus side, I’m late because my best friend drove 800 miles to spend the weekend with me and we wore ourselves out. 🙂
Shelly says
This past week was a fairly good week for me and I was able to accomplish quite a few goals. One goal I really need to work on is getting to bed early. I used to be really good about to bed early but I have let the time I get into bed slowly get later. I made a little progress but I really need to do better this week. I am tired of being so tired during the day.
I am also reading 4 books currently. Which is more than I read all last year total so I am making good progress on my book reading too. I have found that when I am riding in the car on the way to church, is a great time to read. Just that small change has helped me get at least one chapter read in each of the books this past week. 🙂
Melissa says
I skipped my weekly goal setting for the last 3 weeks, and I noticed a BIG drop in my productivity.

I have to say, I use your recipe page as often as I use my cookbooks! One of these days I’ll have to print them all out though…. maybe. 🙂
