How to Create a Christmas Budget — and Stick With It!

I’m honored to be guest-posting on the What’s In the Bible Blog today on How to Create a Christmas Budget — and Stick With It! Here’s a snippet:

1. Create a Budget

Yes, it’s kind of a no-brainer, but you can’t stick with your Christmas budget if you don’t have a budget in the first place. Sit down this weekend, if at all possible and look at your current expenditures and your income and decide what is a realistic budget amount to set aside for Christmas.

2. Start Saving

The sooner you can start setting aside money for Christmas, the better. Even if all you can manage to squeeze out of your budget is $3 to $5 each paycheck, start setting that aside in a separate fund. Do not allow yourself to touch it for any reason, except to purchase Christmas gifts.

We typically start planning for Christmas spending halfway through the year. Since we use a cash envelope system, we just start socking away most of our gift cash for Christmas. In addition, we also save up our Swagbucks Amazon gift cards to use for Christmas presents. And I keep my eyes open for other ways to earn free gift cards or products that would be good for gifting.

Good ideas!!! We set a budget and set aside a certain amount per week all year, we have had a credit card free Christmas 2 years now, and it will be 3 this year. We are also almost done shopping. Sure there may be deals out there, but not on what my girls wanted or we needed.

I have a gift budget of $20 every two weeks. All birthday/Christmas/shower gifts come out of this budget. It has been so helpful – and freeing! – to have this cash-only budget in place. I have found it makes me more creative and personal in my gift-giving. Great tips!

I have a xmas account through my credit union. I am blessed to be able to save $150/mos.
This is also our vacation and bday accounts too. We have been blessed to take 2 Disney vacations and a cruise over the last 5yrs with our acct. I have surprised my girls with their 3rd Disney trip in Jan. I am done shopping for the kids, just need to get family gifts done. If anyone is looking for an Ipod/Ipad for xmas I was able to snag a 4th generation Ipod 8G last night from the Apple refurb site for @129.00 with free shipping. My 5 yr old will go nuts on xmas morning.
