Michaels: $5/$5 purchase coupon!

FavoriteLoadingAdd to my favorites

by Crystal on February 3, 2012

Update: A few readers have already had trouble redeeming this at their store. Just a heads up that I can’t guarantee that this will work for you so I wouldn’t make a special trip across town to use it or anything. Let us know how it goes if you try to use it!

Here’s a hot coupon! Get $5 off any purchase of $5 or more at Michaels.

This coupon is good through February 4, 2012. This coupon has exclusions, including clearance items, but you should still be able to get something free or almost-free with it.

One coupon per customer per day.  To maximize on this, you could bring some family members and each of you could go through the checkout line and do separate transactions.

Thanks, Cleverly Simple!

Woo-hoo! Thanks!

Valerie February 3, 2012 at 9:39 am

Thanks! We’ll be passing one today!~

Carrie L February 3, 2012 at 9:40 am

It’s not letting me print it saying the page has been closed. :(

Suzanne February 3, 2012 at 11:38 am

Try using a different browser. I received that error message using Chrome, but was able to successfully print using Firefox.

Heather February 3, 2012 at 9:40 am

huh. I got a $5 off $25 in my email, I’ve never heard of them sending out these sweet little coupons!

Rachel February 3, 2012 at 9:41 am

Would it be ok for me to print 2 coupons(1 house and 1 work) and let my 4 year old use one and I use one?

Becky February 3, 2012 at 10:03 am

Yes, I do that sort of thing all of time with my kids. Just give her the $$$ & coupon to use.

Janelle (Gluten Freely Frugal) February 3, 2012 at 9:41 am

I think it means you have to spend $5 to get $5 off (up to a maximum of $25 per coupon), so really $5 off of $10, $10 off $20, etc.. The wording is VERY confusing.

Crystal February 3, 2012 at 9:45 am

Yes, very confusing wording. I re-read it like four times. Has anyone tried using it yet? If so, please let us know how it worked for you so I can update the post.

Amanda February 3, 2012 at 3:58 pm

I just spoke with a Michaels customer service representative (after unsuccessfully trying to use the coupon today), as long as you have the correct coupon printed, it states “spend $5 or more pre-tax and receive $5 off your purchase”, you only need to spend $5 , you can make a $5 purchase and only pay the tax! There is confusion about the coupon, which came down from corporate to a lot of the stores, if you have a problem when checking out ask to speak to a manager.

mindy February 3, 2012 at 9:00 pm

my kids and i each used 1 coupon today to buy craft papers and bunch of candy melts for our baking stock pile. You can use this toward sale items also but not clearance items. will try again tomorrow :)

Jamie February 3, 2012 at 10:04 am

How do you get to that coupon besides direct link? I check their ad coupons every week and am not getting to it through my normal route. Never seen anything like this for Mike’s before. But it IS just for two days so that’s what makes me think it could be legit. It’s just rare, that’s for sure.

Crystal February 3, 2012 at 10:29 am

They sent it out to their email list.

Rachel February 3, 2012 at 10:06 am

I can not get it to print the entire coupon. It only prints half of it.

Sarah February 3, 2012 at 10:19 am

I don’t see why it wouldn’t be legit, it says it’s from michaels.com…

Lisa G. February 3, 2012 at 10:20 am

hope it works! When I clicked the “Print” button on the page it said it couldn’t print it because the page had been closed (maybe they caught on to their mistake?) I had to print it using my browser.

Katie February 3, 2012 at 10:33 am

Mine told me that the page had been closed as well. I just printed from the browser, which just printed the page with the coupon. I switched to Safari to see if it was the same. It printed exactly the same both ways.

Crystal February 3, 2012 at 5:28 pm

I often get this in Chrome. It works if I switch to IE.

Stephanie February 3, 2012 at 10:31 am

If you’re having trouble printing the whole coupon, right click on the coupon image and select ‘print picture’. Looking forward to going to Michaels’ today, thanks Crystal!

Leighann February 3, 2012 at 10:32 am

https://www.facebook.com/Michaels?sk=wall&filter=1

That’s Michael’s Facebook page. The coupon is for $5 off a $5+ (pretax) purchase. If your item is $5.01 (plus tax), you will get $5 off. If your item is $10 (plus tax), you will get $5 off.

You can still score some free items (I’m getting more wire for my wire jewelry!!), but the coupon is not good on clearance items, so you’ll need to watch that.

Hope that helps!

Rachel February 3, 2012 at 10:45 am

Their facebook page says it IS a valid coupon. That you spend $5 or more and get $5 off

jamie February 3, 2012 at 10:46 am

I got an email from Mike’s last night at 11:47pm, but it was for $10 off $30. Not quite as good! ;)

alicia February 3, 2012 at 11:00 am

Making Cents with D
Did you get a Michaels Stores email today that said something to the affect of $5 of a $5 purchase, and in fine print it said something about a maximum of $25??? Well, I just got off the phone with Michaels and this is what they explained to me: 1. The original coupon emailed was emailed with an error on it: the maximum $25 part.
2. The coupon link has been fixed to pop up the correct coupon.
3. Y…our purchase must be $5.01 to receive $5 off.
4. All Michaels stores have been made aware of the coupon mistake.
5. If you printed off the coupon that has the error on it, DON’T THROW IT AWAY! It will still work, Michaels has updated their internal coupon coding to reflect the correct coupon wording.
6. There is no print cap on this coupon. You can print it up several times. The customer service rep. I spoke to suggested taking it in to different Michaels stores if you wanted to maximize your savings. Or, also suggested, take a friend with you.
7. Michaels will NOT be honoring the original wording on the original coupon.

HTH everyone with what is going on with that email. Happy Shopping at Michaels! Don’t forget to check out their clearance and dollar section…Me: I’m off to go (tomorrow) score some freebie party favors for my son’s bday next week…

sarah February 3, 2012 at 11:41 am

The coupon does exclude clearance items still, right?

Cyndi February 3, 2012 at 10:43 pm

Yes, clearance is excluded and may not be used with any other coupons (e.g. 40% off an item).

lori February 3, 2012 at 11:00 am

I contacted corporate for clarification and they said it was good for $5 off any purchase of $5+. So spend $5, get $5 off; spend $10, get $5 off, etc.

They also told me that they sent an email to every store verifying the validity of this coupon so you should have no trouble using it. If you do, you can ask the manager to check his inbox :)

nicole February 3, 2012 at 11:01 am

I just printed it out no problem 2x!
thanks!

Patti February 3, 2012 at 11:27 am

Good luck with any coupon for Michael’s. Seems like no matter what I buy, it never falls under the perimeters of the coupon. Does anyone else have this issue? I was just in there this week and bought some small tins – but they wouldn’t honor the coupon because they rang up on sale even though nothing was marked on the shelf. It is very frustrating to say the least. I just wonder if everything is “on sale” so that you never can use the coupons?

Kathryn February 3, 2012 at 3:21 pm

I’ve had bad experiences with coupons at Michael’s also.

Also with other deals.

Example: They had a B2G1 Free deal advertised on Crayola products a few months ago. I got 3 Crayola products, one was 3.99, two at 5.99. The deal was only good for items 4.99 and up. Totally my mistake, I didn’t realize at the time (such tiny little print on those ads). But still I would have thought they would have let me have my 3.99 product for free anyway. It saved the store $1 after all! But, nope; they wouldn’t let me get 1 free.

Monica February 4, 2012 at 12:29 am

Oh, that stinks! I actually have really good luck with their coupons and never have to pay full price. They definitely have their rules…no Martha Stewart, no books, etc. I have a customer where I work who works at Michaels and was talking about how the employees are watched carefully by video camera and when she makes a mistake she hears about in her earpiece. EARPIECE? Bizarre. But I think it was a fluke that something was an unadvertised sale. Probably just a clearance item that got passed over by mistake. Don’t give up on Michaels, though. You can get some pretty sweet deals there. : )

Becky February 3, 2012 at 11:40 am

I just used mine with no problems. My item was $12.99 and it took $5 off. If you aren’t crafty or just want to use it on something a little more practical, here are a few suggestions:

Cute boxes of bandages for $1 each
Lots of cute journals, paper cubes & other paper $1-$3
Valentine’s candy
Thread
Gift bags
Baskets or totes for getting organized
Pens & pencils

I always find great gifts for kids at Michaels, too!

Andrea February 3, 2012 at 2:21 pm

I’m going to use it for super glue!

Jamie February 4, 2012 at 9:13 am

My Michaels has a whole isle dedicated to children’s books!

Dani February 3, 2012 at 12:13 pm

Can I use this on sale items? I know I can’t on clearance items.

April February 3, 2012 at 2:21 pm

Yes you can! I did today on yarn!

Wendy February 3, 2012 at 12:26 pm

I just used mine with no problems. My total was just over $6, so I ended up paying just over $1. The cashier was surprised to see such a good coupon, but it rang up fine; he said he’d have to print one out for himself and go shopping after his shift!

Lois February 3, 2012 at 12:53 pm

I printed and used the coupon with no problems….I bought something that was $6.99 and got the $5 off =)

Ferchi February 3, 2012 at 1:25 pm

I use it this morning with no problems. Ocoee, Fl

Jennifer February 3, 2012 at 1:29 pm

I just printed out 4 – 1 each for my husband and I to use both days – thanks!

Autumn February 3, 2012 at 2:12 pm

Has anyone tried to use it from their smartphone yet, instead of printing the coupon? I’m curious to see if it works

coupon woman February 3, 2012 at 2:14 pm

If you right-click on the coupon image and click View Image and then print from there.
I used it this morning with no issues. Bought something that was $5.49 and paid $.53!

jk February 3, 2012 at 2:19 pm

Just went w/my girls and coupon works w/out any problems! Had to buy a regular priced item…so got some drawing pads and paper rolls to keep my kids busy.

April February 3, 2012 at 2:24 pm

It worked in Kentucky with no problem. My total was $5.00 exactly and I was expecting to pay tax, but my total was $0.00 after she scanned the coupon. So excited making my daughter a blanket and can get the yard I need for free!!! YEAH thanks for sharing!

Tatyana February 3, 2012 at 2:26 pm

I can’t find this coupon. When I open the page, it’s all strange with only words to one side and nothing else…

Becky Ward February 3, 2012 at 2:39 pm

Thank you for the coupon link! I just used my coupon and had no problems.

Jennifer February 3, 2012 at 3:10 pm

Just used the coupon in Virginia with no problems!
Thanks!

Jessica February 3, 2012 at 4:08 pm

I went to a store in Columbus OH with my kids and it worked great. The cashier was awesome and let my kids each use a coupon also. So we each got two balls of yarn, which was on sale 2/$6, and after the coupon our total was $1 plus tax. I can’t find yarn at thrift stores that cheap, so I was very happy.

Crystal, with your knitting dish cloths, they have the cotton yarn for that on sale 4/$5 so you could get 4 skeins free with this coupon!

elizabeth lyons February 3, 2012 at 4:08 pm

worked for me today

Jena February 3, 2012 at 4:20 pm

It worked off my smart phone….I bought a canvas bag for $3 & am embroidering it for my mother in law to say Nana…gift for mothers day! Along with a journal, notepad & set of cards that all match ($1 each)…$1 for a mothers day gift set!

Margery February 3, 2012 at 4:22 pm

I used it in Atlanta today. I bought four sugar-n-cream yarn, which was on sale for 4/$5. The coupon was applied before tax, so I paid *NOTHING*.

My 10-year old daughter also used it to buy some things for herself.

My 7-year old daughter also used one to buy some things for herself.

I am thinking of taking the entire family again tomorrow. There are bins of goodies for $1.50 each. Lion Brand Homespun yarn is on sale for $5, and there are spools of ribbon for $1 each, plus lots of rubber stamps at $1 or $1.50.

Fantastic!

Heather February 3, 2012 at 5:03 pm

Worked great in chesapeake va

Sarah February 3, 2012 at 6:14 pm

Ours worked! My sister used one for me too! We are going back tomorrow to get something else! Thanks so much!

Crystal February 3, 2012 at 6:34 pm

I used mine in Snellville GA today and it worked great!

monique February 3, 2012 at 7:25 pm

They will scan it from ur phone it worked for me.

Jamie February 3, 2012 at 7:42 pm

Does anyone know how to get this coupon to work with the mobile app? I just have a 40% off coupon on the app.

Julie in IN February 3, 2012 at 7:58 pm

I took my 7 children and the coupons worked fine in Northern IN. Each of us purchased some items; I asked before we checked out if we could purchase multiple items totaling $5 and if we could use it on sale items. Both scenarios were ok; my 6 yo girl bought five $1 items and didn’t even owe tax. Thanks for sharing.

I bought a beautiful fabric covered box for my closet and hope to get some more tomorrow; it will look so nice to have a beautiful and organized closet shelf.

Allie February 3, 2012 at 7:59 pm

I used this today and I was also able to use the 40% off coupon from the weekly ad as well. I had well over the $5 requirement though. :) My 5 year wants to go back tomorrow so she can use this coupon to get some stickers with her allowance.

Tina February 3, 2012 at 9:47 pm

LOVE< LOVE< LOVE this money saving hint. I was able to use two coupons today and will plan a trip tomorrow for more savings.

Tatyana February 3, 2012 at 10:43 pm

Can anybody help me find this coupon. When I click on the link – nothing happens

Kim February 3, 2012 at 11:06 pm

I printed 4 of these off this morning and used all 4 tonight at our local Michaels with no problem. I had my mom, son and daughter with me, and they didn’t even question the coupons. With a $5. purchase, you get $5. off. Nothing confusing about it.

Mandi February 3, 2012 at 11:11 pm

Also loved this coupon! My hubby took me to Michaels today as well. I made a purchase with one of the $5 off coupons and they let me use my 40% coupon with it. My hubby also bought something and used the other $5 coupon. Also happy that I went today and found out about their new rewards card which is FREE! If you sign up for their rewards card you get a 20% off coupon when you register the card and you get a 20% off coupon on your birthday. The purpose of the card is once you have spent $100 you get a $5 gift card. Its a good deal if you shop Michael’s regularly. :)

Monica February 4, 2012 at 12:01 am

Worked for my child and me in So Cal today. We got her some polymer clay and small clay cutter shapes. No problem.

Lisa February 4, 2012 at 12:10 am

my mom and I successfully each used one of these coupons today to buy $5.49 items for $.49 and I printed 2 more to use tomorrow!!

Christine February 4, 2012 at 7:31 am

I worked fine for me yesterday. I was able to purchase some knitting needles & some yarn I needed. Lets hope they do this sometime again!

christine February 4, 2012 at 8:17 am

We went to the store and bought paints that were on sale for 6.99 and spent 2.15 with coupon and tax. THis made two little girls very happy to have there own paints. Thank you so much.
