I think t-shirt yarn only works well (or at least works the best) when you have a shirt with no side seams.

Yes, the t-shirts with no side seems work best because you can get one continuous length on “yarn” to work with.
These trivets are great because each only takes the yarn made from one t-shirt so there are no knots to deal with in the middle of the project.
