Make It and Love It shows you how to make a knit scarf from a t-shirt. I really want to try this one–if I can work up the guts to attempt it with my meager sewing skills!

Do you have a fun and frugal DIY idea to share? I’d love to hear about it! Read the submission guidelines and submit it here.

How fun! I am so going to try this-gotta get some colorful shirts from the thrift store!

Tammy @ Skinny Mom's Kitchen September 13, 2011 at 9:14 am

Scarfs are my favorite accessory! Thanks!

I’ve only just begun sewing again for the first time in years, and my skills weren’t that great to begin with. You can totally do this, Crystal! Scarves are really forgiving. Really!

Perfect for you since you wear a lot of scarves, Crystal!

I don’t think this will work from a t-shirt. It’s not long enough. You just need knit (t-shirt-type) fabric. It will actually make the project easier, but possibly more expensive.

Joann’s has knit fabric on sale for 40% and 50% off on a regular basis. Just watch the sales. If not, you can use a 40% off coupon on a cut of fabric to make it.

I can see you making this. You look so cute when I’ve seen pictures/videos of you in scarves!

Lisa September 13, 2011 at 10:53 am

Wow–a co-worker was just in here wearing one of those!

It was 94º here yesterday. No scarves here until December!

In Alaska we could get away with wearing scarves year round!

Too funny! Here it’s shorts and going barefoot year-round (not me, but the rest of my family!) I’ve been to a tropical climate as well and it’s just the rainy season and the dry season, so no scarves there, ever.

haha

If you don’t have any extra t-shirts, they are all on sale at Michael’s this week 5/$10. That is cheaper than the thrift store sometimes!

What a cute idea! I want to try this.

You can also get t-shirts at Dollar Tree as long as you’re not too picky about color ;-D

If you are on pinterest, there are a ton of diy scarves that are so easy, many do not require any sewing and can be done in one sitting. I have also googled diy scarves and found several great ideas. I am adding this one to my list to try.

So cute!

Just make sure you use a ballpoint needle when sewing with knits. If you use a regular needle, your machine may skip stitches. Also, I’d recommend a bit of a larger stitch.
