Love it!! I’ve been trying to do just that. I tell you its so incredible how I will be thinking something or in the middle of a goal/project and BAM it pops up on MSM to keep the encouragement going. :) So weird

This is the perfect quote for me tonight. I was struggling with placing some items in the car for tomorrow’s consignment sale. I have to remember that I have the memories- and hundreds of pictures. It’s not really the item that is special after all. Besides – I smile thinking about how my son’s items might just make another little boy very happy. I hope. They are still beautiful, but aren’t useful for us any longer. Thanks for the reminder.

Crystal,

I just wanted to say that I a few night ago, I dreamed that I got to meet you, the “Money Saving Mom” in person. I was ecstatic and speechless and gushing all at once, like meeting a movie star. You were, as I would expect, a normal modest mom who was perhaps a little overwhelmed by my exuberance.

Anyhow, I told my husband about it and he laughed. He said most people might dream about famous people, but I fall asleep reading Dave Ramsey and have dreams about Money Saving Mom. Anyhow, I thought you’d be amused!

This is one of my all time favorite quotes! I’ve been working to simplify our household over the last several months, and when I find myself struggling over whether to keep or give away/pitch an item, I always ask myself if it’s *useful* or *beautiful* to me!

I have decided to get rid of 25 things a day for the month of August. I don’t have a lot of clutter in my house, so it is a challenge. But, it is amazing to see that we all have things that we really don’t need or use even though they are good buys or worth something. I have taken some things in to consignment shops and made some money on other things. Most things will be donated. I don’t know if I will have enough stuff to make it through the month, but I am going try! That will be 775 less things in my house at the end of August. I may be working on paper clutter the last week or two, but it will help clean out the files and other papers that we don’t need. I feel much better when there is less to clean and take care of. It is easier to keep the house clean and I have more time for myself to do things I want.

25 items a day. That is quite the undertaking! I just completed a 30-day organization/decluttering process of my home and eliminated some of the “things” I have kept over the years. It really helped me to see things from a different perspective. With Crystal’s encouragement, I just finished reading Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover and in an attempt to complete Baby Step 1 ($1,000.00 in an emergency fund QUICKLY), I find I am looking at the same possessions I looked at 2 months ago and I am seeing things from yet another perspective. I honestly feel I could now live a minimalist lifestyle. I agree with you that it is far easier to keep my home clean and have more time to devote to those I love and to things I want to do. If only I had the energy to eliminate it all! Good luck to you in completing your self-challenge.

Love this quote! We became minimalists in our house at the beginning of this year to help keep our house clean and this quote was the inspiration (plus we have a child with a compromised immune system). The funny thing is that my sister and her kids need to move in with us…well, all we had to do was move one desk out of a room and it was an instant bedroom for my sister. Becoming minimalists allowed us to provide her with a temporary home and it we didn’t have to worry one bit about where we were going to put all of our ‘stuff’.

I think it happens that any particular thing may not seem useful now but it can be of great importance a few month later. In that case getting rid of it is foolishness

If you have not used it in 6mth-a year you likely will not use it…

The quote says, “that you do not KNOW to be useful” So maybe if you “KNOW” it will be useful in the future you should not be “foolish” and get rid of it!

I am reading Tsh Oxenreider’s book and this quote really jumped out at me. I’m a work in progress! I just posted about a funny thing that happened while cleaning out my fridge yesterday:

Ain’t that the truth! A lot of the furniture in our home has a very special meaning, story, or purpose for us. They can’t go with us when we die, but while we have them, we are going to enjoy and cherish and delight in their beauty!
