I was so blessed and inspired by Dr. Henry Cloud at the Women of Faith conference last week. One of the topics he spoke on was happiness.
He shared three keys that much research has shown led to deep happiness. Want to know what they were? Being a giver, having close friends around you, and setting goals.
I’ve always known that goal-setting gave me much fulfillment and purpose for living life, but I thought it might just be because I’m rather Type A and all. So it was encouraging to me to know that scientific research backs up what I’ve experienced in real-life meaning goal-setting is not just something that helps Type A folks like me. Whether you’re Type A or Type Z, it will positively impact your life!
As promised, here’s an update on my 10 goals for last week:
Last Week’s Goals

2. Finish reading Revenge of the Red Knight aloud to the children.{Done.}

I didn’t get in on the goal setting last week, but considering that last weekend was my yardsale, I figure I wouldn’t have accomplished ANY of them anyway LOL… I’m just now feeling recovered from 30 odd hours in the heat & sun…

Good morning! I would love to see some of your marriage setting goals as well- I find it encouarging to see Mom’s and wives focusing on their men since they are the ones we have made vows to! I realize this can be very personal but I would absolutely love to see how you handle it all as I am in the process of growing a child now and worry a little about handling all the different things come next spring when our little one comes- things like work, exercise, housework, and most importantly spending time with God and our lovely men!

At this point, we’ve decided that’s something I won’t be sharing publicly. But if you ever meet me in real-life, feel free to ask. 🙂

I am loving these goal setting articles. They really inspire me.
Eileen Leacock says
I started doing this a few week ago, it is very motivating to have them listed. I though it would be fun to have a link up with our goal and encourage each other. You have a lot of interest. Any way my goals have run a muck. Here is a copy of my goals from my blog.
1. For the next 27 days, I will be focus on all the projects I need to complete before the movers come to pack our house.
A. Finish de-cluttering our home
B. Finish my photo album project
C. Pack the children transition items
D. Work through my cleaning list
E. Remove all wall hangings
F. Separate the current school year books so I can find them first on the other end
G. Decide what I have to take with me, (we have not found a home on the other end).
2.This week my major focus will be starting school. We will be continuing school till September 12. Yeah!
3. Keeping on track with my reading for the Bible in 90 Days/ Blogging through the Bible in 90 Days challenge. Continues till October 8, 2011, requires an hour of daily bible reading.

I love reading yours & others goals for the week! I am also a “type A” personality and love To-Do lists… they definitely help me feel motivated as I go into a new week. Up until now, I have been writing down EVERYTHING I am thinking that I might want to get done in a week and slowly chip away at it. This method helps me to feel less stressed since I don’t have everything swirling around in my head- but I never get even half of it accomplished, so it can be discouraging too. I like your method of choosing 10 goals and working to accomplish those.
Someone alluded to this earlier in the comments- but how do you differentiate between goals and to-do tasks? My old method always included things like “make dinner” and other things that need to be done daily to keep the house & family running. If I don’t write those smaller things down and cross them off, I often feel like I have nothing to show for my days! I am a first time mom to an active toddler, so I am slowly trying to readjust my expectations on what a “productive” day looks like- a GOOD thing for sure, but hard at times! Just curious if you also make To Do lists or if your 10 goals are it for the week…
Crystal says
I try not to make long to-do lists because they overwhelm me. I usually assign each goal for the week to a certain day (unless it is a task that takes longer than one day–such as running!). I work off of my daily schedule for most of my tasks, so I don’t have to write them down. Extra things I need to remember are written on my to-do list on my Daily Docket that I keep in my Homemaking Binder.
Alexandra Howard says
I was curious about the doing laundry every day thing…..we have a very limited wardrobe, have a 4 yo, 2yo, & a 2 month old, and use cloth diapers, and I only run 2 loads on Monday and 2 loads on Thursday. I was talking about this the other Sunday in the nursing mom’s room at church and all the women thought I was crazy. They didn’t understand how I only did 4 loads a week…….am I weird??? My two oldests are boys and super messy, so I thought I actually did more laundry than most because one of them is Pigpen and I change him all the time!
Crystal says
I prefer to run smaller loads every day than a few big loads every few days. So the load every day is working well for us–especially since our washer measures the water used by the weight of the load. This might not work as well for everyone, but it’s been working well for us. If I keep up with it consistently, I think I may be able to skip a day every now and then. But we usually generate enough laundry each day for a small load–between three active children and my husband and I working out/running every day (I can’t stand to put stinking workout clothes back on, so I wash mine every day!). 🙂
Janice says
We are a 5 person household also. I have 2 older boys (5 & 7) who are extremely dirty, so when they go outside they have to change clothes before they are allowed back in the house. I do at least 8 loads a week (sometimes more), but that also includes linens (towels, cloth napkins, etc.) Maybe you just have a larger washer than some others?? I wash clothes every day also because I want it to be a “non-event” in my life and just a normal part of every day.
Gretchen says
Thank you so much for doing this! Here is mine for the week:

I have two kids and I can’t imagine needing to do laundry daily. Is this because of a limited wardrobe?

Your blogs about setting goals really inspired me, I’ve been watching my husband who is really good at setting weekly goals do this and your blog was icing on the cake for me! My husband gave me a goal journal and in it I have a list for yearly goals and then I do weekly goals and each day I write a little soething about each day! Thanks for inspiring!

You are such an encouragement for me, I see everybodys lists and I feel embarrased 🙁
Last week I force myself to do some things on my list, this week I definitely have to finish packing since we are moving this weekend.

I realized some of my gaols were not completed due to a crazy unplanned schedule. I have adapted some to make sure they are done and I am going to try to not worry about perfection.
exercise 5 out of 7 days for at least 20 min each time
clean/organize my book shelf and nightstand
continue with gratitude journal and daily devotions
continue organizing “tastefully Simple” paperwork
go on a datenight (we have a gift certificate)
read at bedtime to boys at least 5 nights
progress reports (from June…yikes)
re-do a couple categories in out budget

Thanks Crystal for the encouragement to set goals! This is something I need to do in order to be more intentional with my family. I have plenty of to-do lists, but usually it’s all home related. I like that you incorporate your kids, marriage, and ministry. Blessings to you!!

Can my goal for the week be to figure out my goals? 🙂
I’m reading the Charlotte Mason Companion now too!

My Goals for this week:
1. Clean house from top to bottom – we are going on vacation and I hate coming home to a dirty house.
2. Have all the laundry done by Friday
3. Pack for vacation
4. Make it to the gym twice this week
5. Write five thank you cards
LindaB says
I have never made a goal list and I raised two productive and fun-loving boys, been married 41 loving years and never touched a computer until I was over 50! I am no longer working after 35 years, now I find I might need to make a list to get motivated. I love that others are doing this too…it’s not just me. Thank you for this idea, it will get me up and moving everyday.
Jennifer says
Thank you Crystal sooo much!!! I wrote some out last week while I waited for my little one at gymnastics Monday am after I saw yours. I did the same as with the laundry thing – good for the first 2 days then failed, boo. Oh well… move on and keep trying. I didn’t realize that goal setting is a part of healthy happiness! I just needed this last week and this week to help me get myself together and a sense of accomplishment. Glad to see that you didn’t get it all done either… Just makes it real and makes me know not everyone does it all either:). Thanks!
Amy Reynolds says
Did relatively well last week…
Here’s this weeks…
Personal – Work out 4 Days, Change toe nail polish (seems ridiculous, but I’m approaching the tacky point, and need to make time for this!), Walk with God, count my blessings…be thankful for the little ones!
Parental – Make Maddie’s skirts (leftover goal from last week) Prepare
Jordan for school, Have an out-of-the-house fun day on Thursday
Marital – Have a Friday night date night, Finish my daily chores/goals so I can spend the evening enjoying him
Ministry – Prepare for teen activities this Friday and Saturday, write notes to new girls and 3 notes to current students, Do something kind for a friend who has recently face unthinkable tragedy.
Household management – Prepare for the JBF sale, Load-a-day 5 days, Clean carpets
Guest says
I laughed so hard when I got to you “reaching the tacky point” comment. I was so there last week and finally removed it on Saturday because it was beginning to be an embarrassment. Ha!
Carrie Bergherm says
This blog has been very inspiring to me. I just recently started making goals for myself too, finding that making 5-10 goals makes things more managable! That way I’m not overwhelmed when I think about everything I have to do… Posted them on my blog: http://berghermlife.blogspot.com/
Pam says
Last week I only accomplished 5 things on my list (50%). This week I hope to be much more focused! Glad to see I’m not the only one that doesn’t accomplish everything on my list.
This week’s list:
Personal Goals- Take my vitamins everday
Household- Put girls clothes that don’t fit into bins, make a meal plan (and stick to it), clean kitchen chairs, dust blinds, make homemade pizza dough
Mothering- Read for at least 15 minutes twice a day, complete art project with older daughter
Business- Shoot first You Tube video and post, organize tax receipts
Meredith says
I love this new feature! I’m a list girl, but you really helped me focus my goals and be more productive. I’m back to work (I’m a teacher), so now I have some work goals, as well as personal, mothering, marriage… etc…
At home…. I need to cut up old clothes to use as swiffer rags and my freezer is next up on my organizing list.
-I will continue exercising 30 minutes a day, including push ups… (I can only do one, but I’m on a mission:)
-Take kids to park after work
-Finish up my last cake decorating class (I’ve always wanted to try it, and after reading Crystal’s goals for the new year, I put it on a list I made, and now I’m doing it!)
-I still need to make a plan for menu planning…such a weakness of mine.
-schedule kids’ haircut appointments
-follow up on our change of homeowners insurance
-go to the bank.
Have a lovely, productive week!

Here is a link to my goals: http://thedollarholleringhomemaker.blogspot.com/2011/08/goals.html
I only have 5 homemaking goals as too many more can be a bit overwhelming and I feel like a failure if I don’t get them all done
mariah says
1. Buy my husband 2 work shirts (he recently lost a ton of weight) (completed, God blessed us with winning a city check gift certificate to most any store in our city, and we got my husband a few items at Kohls…free, really a huge blessing right now!)
2. Send off letter my son wrote to his friend (check)
3. Finish some legal paperwork (couldn’t complete it, turns out I have to go through a whole different process)
4. Organize toy closet (again) (not yet accomplished)
5. Get a menu plan of school lunches together for the school year (check)
6. Continue reading program and fine motor skills training with my kids (check)
7. Get the kids to bed every night at 7:30pm (check)
This week I’m just focusing on:
1. That toy closet I didn’t do last week
2. Making fresh baked cookies after school tomorrow
Also, the regular chores and schedule of the day. 2 of my 3 kids start public school tomorrow, so I’m going to see how our schedule adjusts.
Hope says
I really love this idea! I have tried the 5 a day to do lists and find that I’m always putting way more than 5 on my list. I’m also putting too many time consuming items on my list for one day. I like this idea for 10 goals for the week and it seems so much more manageable! I’m going to be making a list later today and I will tackle it joyfully!!
[email protected] says
I am really enjoying these posts Crystal! It is a great reminder to be purposeful in the way we are living.
Sometimes I get over-ambitious and set too many goals for the week, then I get over-whelmed and don’t accomplish anything. I have found that it helps to write down all my goals in specific categories on one sheet and then prioritize for the week. If I get one thing accomplished in each area, I’m happy. I can then look at the sheet the next week and set new priorities.
I also choose one big, hairy goal (something I do not necessarily want to do at times!) each week and work on for ten minutes a day. It helps to break procrastination.
Thanks for the inspiration. 🙂

Last weeks goals:
1. Rest more so I don’t miscarry again (I’m not very good at resting – hence on my “to-do” list)
*I haven’t miscarried yet – so I guess I accomplished this goal :D, although I didn’t rest much*
2. Plan what school will look like for my 19-month old son this fall
*Not even started*
3. Start Facebook page for my blog

5. Wrap gifts and make cards for all the “occasions” both last week and next week
*Bought the wrapping paper and made some stuff for the stamp camp, but need to finish*
This weeks goals:
Home:
1. One load of laundry completed each day – I usually get it washed and dried, just not folded and put away
2. Clean bathrooms
3. Vacuum at least twice this week
4. Menu plan
Children:
5. Plan school
6. Spend time going to a park, swimming or doing something fun
Business:
7. Organize for stamp camp
8. Make challenge card
Ministry:
9. Organize baby shower and wedding shower I am hosting. Find out details of projects I am to make for my bro-in-law and sis-in-law-to-be’s wedding
10. Make cards and wrap gifts for 5 “occasions”
Oh yeah, and REST – yeah right!
Thanks for this, Crystal – it really helps me to be accountable!

Way to go, Chelsea! And I’m so thankful your baby is still alive and well. I’ll pray that continues to be the case.
Erica @ Just Call Me Cheap says
Great job!
I know how you must be feeling with worrying about a miscarriage- I had one in October and the first few months of my current pregnancy I was constantly worrying about doing too much and losing the baby. Everything has turned out fine so far and I know all will be well with your baby too! Try and rest and feel grateful for all of the annoying pregnancy symptoms (I think I was the only woman ever to actually be happy about having morning sickness)!
Elias says
Work with my son on handwriting.
Read to the kids more.
Hug them more.
Make some salsa/relish
Organize the food cabinets.
Plan another budget and look at money in general.
Workout if I”m healthy by next week.
Go see a friend who had their baby on Sat (Assuming I am healthy by next week)
Lor says
Thanks for the goal idea. I always have my to-do list but not a goal list for each week. I think I will initiate one to help me focus. Now that my kids are older and I’m not homeschooling I feel a little at a loss with my time and find I am wasting too much of it. I think setting goals in various areas will help me. Thanks.

God is calling me to fast facebook. I have been all kinds of productive since doing that. God is showing me how very ultra hyper sensitive I had become since being on facebook, putting too much stake in how many “likes” and positive/negative responses I was getting. I am finding new freedom in letting some of that go and finding I am MUCH more productive. Interesting. More on that here. YOU ARE LOVED, no matter how much you accomplish today!!!! http://www.becomforted.com/2011/08/gods-redemptive-work-part-three.html
Amy B says
LOVE it! I only go on FB once a week. I resisted getting on it forever just because I was afraid it would waste all my time. You go girl!
Koree says
Yes it is so bad for our self-worth I feel that I do a lot of comparing about my life versus others through FB.
Jessica says
It’s funny how one little website can create such different responses…
I rely on Facebook as my main venue of social contact. I have a lot of trouble going out & meeting people in real life, but I can talk to my old friends and distant family whenever I like on FB. Like my cousin who is in Italy with her husband… She’s pregnant with her first and due any day- without Facebook I wouldn’t be able to support her and share pregnancy stories.
I don’t find myself worrying about it at all… I love when a post gets a lot of “like”s, but if it doesn’t, it doesn’t phase me because I’m not there for popularity…
Koree says
I did eight of mine completely and didn’t finish cleaning out the fridge completely and I did not start on my painting commission at all. My new goals are:
1. Fold hanging laundry
2. organize coupons
3. get back into meal planning
4. go through cds; import to laptop and sell them
5.get rid of newspapers without feeling guilty for not reading them!!! ( i keep saying I will)
I will stick to 5 b/c I start Grad School and that is my number one goal now.
Becky says
Get rid of the guilt. Anything you need to know that’s in the paper, you will either hear through your friends/family, or it will show up on the homepage on your computer.
I figure if it isn’t important enough for yahoo, then I don’t need to know.
Most of the news in papers is just a reporters opinion anyway, and is not really “news”
purge them, Koree, and save the guilt for something else.
Koree says
Thanks girl!! I have the same problem cleaning out my fridge and feeling so wasteful !! Just let it go.
jess says
I dismally failed this week. I’m going to try again this week. With a 2 month old and 3 year old I just never have time for anything it seems. 🙁 gonna try harder though!
Heather Harman says
Hmmm. Not to go against the grain here, but with a two month old (I’ve had 4 of them), I would try less hard! Not quite as low as “giving up”, but close! I always have looked back at that infant period and wondered why I was so hard on myself. Just because you’re not visibly “accomplishing” much right now, doesn’t mean you are lazy or wasting time. Just getting through is good enough, at this point. However, Crystal’s point about setting goals is valid – it does help you feel better. Just make sure the goals are something attainable like:
Feed baby. Feed toddler. Feed myself. Hug and hold kids. Sit on couch and rest. Read toddler a book while feeding baby. Change diapers. Read a book yourself while feeding baby.
In a few months, it will get so much easier! And I mean all this unasked-for advice in the friendliest, joking-around-while-eating-ice-cream-together kind of way.
kj says
Don’t worry about much while you aren’t sleeping through the night! 🙂 I had two goals when I had a newborn. (Besides feeding, changing and sleeping.) I wanted my bed made and the dishes done. If those two things were accomplished, I felt like I did well for the day. Throw in some laundry once in a while, and I felt really accomplished! It will get easier! Besides, I thought going from 1 child to 2 children was the hardest. Going from 2 to 3 was much easier! (You already know how to juggle, you just toss in one more!)
Erica @ Just Call Me Cheap says
I feel the same way, though I have to say with each child I have I get better at letting go of all of the things I think I should be doing. I have a four year old, a two year old and am pregnant (due in November) so I am trying to focus on taking care of myself more and spending time with the kids though it is hard sometimes! I am a neat freak and not being able to mop the floors everyday and stick to my old cleaning schedule bugs me. My husband doesn’t mind that I have been letting things slide because when I push myself to do too much I am a grumpy wife when he gets home from work- he would rather a slightly dirty house and happy wife when he comes home.
Crystal says
I think this post may be an encouragement to you:

😉 Well, I hope it’s pretty obvious that my goals are going to be different than other people’s goals, but maybe that would be a good thing to post as a reminder on next week’s posts. Sometimes we forget, don’t we?! 🙂
Roze says
With a 2 month old and a 3 year old…I would say you are a screaming success!! Sounds like you achieved your primary goal of mothering 2 beautiful children. Please don’t put yourself down. Remember…this too shall pass. Love/Roze

Crystal, I just want to say again what an inspiration you are. Ever since I found your blog you have inspired me in so many ways, saving money on groceries, on clothing or anything retail, and your posts on goals, and having a purpose really speak to me. I would live a completely organized (almost to the minute) life but of course we all know that is irrational. But your post at the beginning of this year on your goals for the year made me want to do the same, set goals for myself and my family. And I’ve found that it too gives me purpose, a feeling that I’m working toward something even if it’s just routine housework. If I have goals for the year &/or week I helps me not feel like I’m roaming around with out a clue.
I just want to say keep up the good work! You are truly an inspiration! =)
Lynn says
I totally agree! Money saving mom is the best blog ever!!
Kari says
I have a hard time separating my to-do list from my goals list. I think I have to many to-do’s. I like how your goals speak to the how (one laundy load every day) versus just being a laundry to-do. Instead of cleaning the house being on my to-do list, maybe I should have a goal of cleaning a room each day of the week.
And it’s always nice to know I’m not the only one that doesn’t get everything crossed off my list! 🙂

LOL, it’s so much more fun to read than to do laundry or exercise!! Mostly canning/dehydrating for me this week – the zucchini and cukes are staging a revolt. I need to find time to go thru the girls dressers and do the pass-me-down thing. I have an afghan to finish and a book that I’m almost done with. The rabbit cages need to be cleaned this week and I need to organize my bi-weekly shopping trip. I also need to worm the goats/sheep and trim their hooves. Oh, and I need to organize the rest of the homeschool material. We start the first full week of September:)

Thanks for sharing this! It’s something the I’ve been needing to do-get my “to-dos” on paper-and I just haven’t done it and this has been an encouragement for me to do so!

I wrote out my goals last week (it’s still hanging on the fridge) but I only got to 3 out of 10 of them. Makes me feel like a complete loser! I think this week, I’ll try to narrow it down to just 5-6 goals and make every effort to finish them.
One of those goals is to starting working out! I need to get off the computer and get started!
Thanks!

My I ask what type of marriage or other goals you set? just curious where to start there… thanks!
Kari says
I’ve seen some marriage related goals on another blog before. They were things like pray for my husband daily, go out on a kid-free date night, be intimate with my husband ___ times this week, or initate intimacy with my husband this week.

this is really encouraging I am a new mom and wife (been married for just over 2 years now and have a 5 month old son) needless to say I have been struggling with trying to balance everything. I am going to start today with this 10 goals for the week and see how it works for me.

I’m enjoying this and applaud all you’re doing. It gives me encouragement to do the same. I am a list maker and could not do w/o them.
The 12.5 miles is great. I am inspired to add to my walking schedule. I do 7-8 miles walking in the morn(total). I like to watch Joyce Meyer when I walk :0)
Have a great week.

I tried doing the one-load-of-laundry-a-day thing, but I found I do much better to do 2-3 loads every other day. I sit down to fold it and watch a favorite show at night, and plan to put it away first thing the next morning (that part is the hardest). Since I hate laundry, I like not doing it every day, folding more loads at once goes quickly when I’m doing something else I enjoy, and putting it away only takes a few extra minutes.
My goals this week:
Housekeeping goals– mop the kitchen floor, vacuum upstairs, stay on top of laundry and dishes, pick/trim/blanch/freeze green beans from garden
Mothering goals– more homeschool prep, get to the library with kids, discuss the possibility of 4-yo’s fish dying soon : (
Business goals– put more ads up on Craigslist, organize files, update Quickbooks
