Thanks so much for featuring my idea! Have a great day.
What an excellent idea! Very creative.
What a great idea! We did this outside with sidewalk chalk, but I always had a hard time thinking of rainy day activities!
great idea! I like it!
What a cute idea!! As a former 1st grade teacher, this is perfect for helping those preschoolers get ready for kindergarten! I would note that the way she has the letters laid out might need to be adjusted. Since we read from left to right, the letter G needs to go at the beginning of the second line rather than at the end. Same with the 3rd and 4th lines! Just something that I saw and, as a teacher, had to point out! This would be a great b-day gift for my 2 year old in September!!
I believe she did this so that as the child was walking through the letters the “G” would be easier to get to when you were on “F” if that makes any sense.
I don’t think it was for readability, I think it was functionality.
I just thought it was important to note, because being able to return to the beginning of a line is an essential pre-reading skill! Might as well start the right habits early!
I agree with Jean. If you are using this to teach pre-literacy skills, it should read left to right. Regardless of walking on the mat or not, I wouldn’t want children coming to me in kindergarten with confusion. You can make it read left to right and still use it for walking on, playing on, and teaching skills.
I just graduated recently with a teaching degree in elementary and special education. I would love to make this for a primary or special needs classroom. It would be so great and cute! I can see using this as a reading carpet etc. too. You could assign a student a letter to sit on during reading and calendar activities.
I see your point. It looks like it works great though for her purpose, as she may have had her son walking through it. I guess it would make sense to just be able to turn the corner onto the next letter rather than jump back to the second line. I agree that it is a cute idea!
For my daughter, I actually do the sidewalk chalk squares (quicker for me but not something I can keep like this) and don’t put any of them in order. I say “jump to the letter A” and she does.
I love this. Perfect for a Christmas present! Thanks!
I am a teacher and I use something similar. I make mine out of a shower curtain with sharpie marker.
I’m confused why you’d need a mat to teach children ABC’s. Can someone explain?
You don’t *need* it — there are plenty of other perfectly acceptable ways to teach the ABC’s, too! It’s just a fun way to help reinforce/teach the ABC’s and, as a mom, I’m always looking for educational things that can be fun, too!
I would suggest adding lower case letters as those are so important for reading and writing. In the previous sentence I typed- how many upper case letters? Only one. Children need to learn the lower case letters, too.
I love this idea too! Thanks for posting such fun family crafts!
LOL…I love the idea. I think just being able to recognize letters and start sounding them out is a good start. I don’t think this playful mat is going to ruin a child’s ability to learn to read. Like the post says, she’s doing it to “teach” the abc’s, not read a book.
