We tried to do this program last summer. By the time we went to redeem our free book in mid-August they were completely out of all but one title, which happened to be too old for my kids. They wouldn’t give me an alternate book or a rain check for one that was age-appropriate.
We did this last year in June–my Kindergartener was SUPER excited to get a free book and so motivated to read her 10 books. I made a special date out of it…once the 10 books were read I took them out individually to the book store to get the free book, and then we had ice cream. It was nice! A good program!
Love this idea!
Does anyone know if there is a lower age limit on these programs? My daughter is two and loves to “read” stories. If I read ten books with her, does that count? I cannot tell if this is in the spirit of the program or not. The free books for younger kids are at the level my daughter likes me to read with her, so we would certainly put it to good use.
For the programs that don’t have a minimum age (some have to be in school and I think it is the B&N one that you have to be going into 1st grade or higher), I start when my kids are around 2 1/2 when they can sit properly to be read to, pick out the reward book, and take it up to the counter themselves to turn in their form.
Crystal, the Barnes and Noble program starts May 24th. This one is for grades 1-6 http://img1.imagesbn.com/pImages/kids/summerreading/2011/BN-Tear-Pad.pdf
Thanks for the link!
Also, Half Price Books (14 and under) starts 6/1 as well. This is no longer $3 per week though
If you read 600 minutes or more by 7/31, you’ll get a $5 coupon (good for 7/25-8/31) and you can enter into the top reader contest (1 winner per age group per store) to win a $20 gift card. http://www.hpb.com/community/fyb/started/
I love this! Thank you for sharing…I didn’t know about it! My son is just like me, he loves to get something for free! When I show this to him he will be thrilled!
I think there is some flexibility with the program store to store. We were at Borders story time this morning and the head of the children’s department told all of the kids that they were eligible and said that they could even do it more than once. My daughter is almost 2, and there were mostly 1-4 year olds there. I plan on keeping track of 10 NEW books that we read – not just the same three that I read over and over and over and…:)
*sigh* they closed all the Borders stores here.
Great program…great books but, yes, you definitely want this done early summer or the book selection is much reduced.
