ING is offering the opportunity to earn a $50 bonus if you open up a free checking account. Here’s how:
::Go to ING and click on the ING Direct Logo in the upper left hand corner.
::Then, click on the “Checking” option and then “Get Started”.
::Follow the directions to set up your account. (There are no fees and no minimums!)
::Use your Electric Orange debit card to make three signature (non-pin) purchases in the first 45 days.
::On day 50, $50 will be deposited in your account.

FYI, each person in your family can open an ING checking account and get the 50 dollars. My husband has his checking account and I have my checking account. He got 50 and I got 50!
@Meredith, Do you know if there is a minimum deposit required to get the $50?
@Lena C, I don’t remember if there is a minimum. If so, it’s really low. I only put in 10 dollars and made two $3 transactions and one $1.20 transaction. My husbands was pretty similar too.
@Lena C,
There is no minimum. I only deposited $1 in each account opened in our home. HOWEVER…you do need to make 3 non-pin purchases for this $50 bonus offer, so it’s wise to put enough money in there to make reasonable priced purchases. I added more money about a week after opening because I’m not going to try and swipe a card for a 25c purchase. Stores are typically charged for each card charge, so many wouldn’t even allow such a small purchase on a card.
I do recommend this bank though, very happy with them so far. I didn’t have huge amounts of extra money when the offers posted up (my husband got a $103 bonus!) so that’s why I only did $1 deposits initially.
(Wrote a novel, lol…hope that helps though.)
@Lena C,
I just opened the account with $1!! Of course, I need to deposit a bit more later so I can spend it to get the $50.
I opened an account tonight, but I am concerned that there is nothing about the fifty dollars on the site. There is a note about a fifty dollar bonus for an investment account. I needed a new checking acct anyway in just my name because I’m going through a separation, and the fifty dollars sure would be nice, but I really wish it was posted somewhere on the ING site. I guess I will wait the 50 days and see if it really works for me.
@Sori, You have to click on the logo in the upper left hand corner. Not saying you won’t get the $50 but that is where it is posted on the site.
I opened an account today as well and nothing on the website says it will give you $50. I hope it works out. Otherwise I will be slightly disappointed. However, my aunt works for ING and will be pleased I now have an account with them!
Sori and Maridith – After you verify your bank account via the deposit amounts (takes a couple of days,) when you log onto your account you will see a bright orange “get a bonus” under your account. It will just say the same thing said here (3 non-pin purchases, after 45 days, etc.) The non-pin purchases you make will also show up under your account and have a pen next to them, indicating signature, so you know those count toward your bonus.
And if you have any concern, don’t hesitate to call them, they have great customer service! There was an incentive for an extra $25 for opening a kid’s account, but the bonus didn’t post. I called them, and they added the bonus while we were on the phone!
What is a non pin purchase?
@Kelly, A non-pin purchase is a purchase you make and select “credit” instead of “debit” – usually requires your signature.
Thanks! I had been meaning to set up a separate vacation account and this was just the motivation to do it!
For those of you worried about not seeing this promo listed on the site – I found it. If you follow Crystal’s directions above and click on the ING Direct symbol in the upper left hand corner after you follow the link listed above, then it takes you to a second page where right in the center of the page, it tells you this promo for the checking account opening(as well as their deals for investing and mortgage depending on which one you highlight), just as you see it listed here above. So, it is there for you to see on their website.
I clicked on Crystal’s link and then the logo in the top left corner and I am not seeing anything similar to the screenshot she has posted. I already have several different accounts with ING so I am familiar with their site, but this is just not coming up for me.
Usually with these type of deals, unless you click on the promo or enter a promo code (if applicable), then the credit is not honored. I agree they have excellent customer service so they would probably honor it if I called, but I am not seeing anything anywhere to back up the offer.
I have loved ING for savings accounts for a long time. I am interested in trying a new bank so we’ll see how this goes and a free $50 is always good!
I live in Idaho and don’t have one of these banks around. Is there a way to close the account in a few months and get my money mailed to me? Or do I need to have a bank in my area for this to work? Cuz I am totally willing to do this if it can all be done online.
I tried to open one but I was declined. Turns out that along with the checking account comes a line of credit for check protection. If I had known they were going to check my credit, I never would have bothered. It would have been nice to have the $50, though.
@ Corinne:
As far as I know, there aren’t any ING “branches” – everything is done online. I actually read through all of their terms, policies, and disclosures before signing up this morning, and in them, it makes it very clear that you have to have a checking account with ANOTHER bank that you will link to your new ING account. When you are ready to close your account, you can call them, and have them transfer the funds into the “linked” checking account at your other bank. Hope that helps!
