Kojo Designs gives a tutorial for making your own padded envelopes. If you use supplies from the Dollar Store, I’m guessing these would be significantly cheaper than buying pre-made padded envelopes.

She also shows you how to make padded envelopes out of wrapping paper.

Do you have a fun and frugal DIY idea to share? I’d love to hear about it! Read the submission guidelines and submit it here.

That’s actually pretty cool and creative – I’m not off mailing tons of things right now that require padded envelopes, but this project makes me want to so that I can make some of these!

Very cool. My husband sells a lot of books on Half.com. We just bought padded envelopes for around .37 each…if this is less expensive and not too time consuming it’s a great idea. We bought them in bulk, not everyone needs or is willing to do that. I like how pretty they are and may do them for when I mail gifts. Thanks!

I can usually get padded envelopes for around $.33/each, so I don’t think it’s cheaper, but they sure are cute! Those would be very fun for sending gifts in.

Great Idea~ The savings would depend on the size. I just purchased approx. 30 6 X 9 size at office depot for 21 cents each.

I actually have started making my own as well, but I use the brown craft paper that is for wrapping boxes to mail (?), and I layer used plastic grocery bags in between for water proofing/padding, and I zig zag stitch it closed. Very secure, and easy to make, and recycling!

@Alisha, So you use plastic sacks instead of bubble wrap? Good idea! :)

If you regularly order from Vitacost you know they wrap every glass bottle in bubble wrap that is sticky on one side. This would be a great way recycle that as you could just stick the paper right to it. I think hubby has saved a massive pile of this and I could never figure out what to use it for. Thanks for the idea!

they are cute, but walgreens has them on sale periodically for cheap.

Whenever I get something in the mail in a padded envelope (from family, web orders, or even freebies), I just open carefully, remove the label and reuse them. :)

You could also get bubble wrap for free by asking your nearest paint-your-own pottery store. They always throw away A TON of bubble wrap when their shipments come in!

You could probably use brown paper grocery bags too…

This is adorable! I don’t see it as money saving as much as just…fun. I used to make envelopes out of magazine pages to send to friends because they just looked really cool. I have a few things to mail coming up in the next few weeks and I think I’ll take this approach – thanks for sharing!
