Jaime from Like a Bubbling Brook shares how to make homemade whole wheat bagels. I hope you have better success than me in your bagel-making adventures. Mine were a royal flop when I tried them a few years ago and I’ve been too chicken to attempt it again.

Do you have a fun and frugal DIY idea to share? I’d love to hear about it! Read the submission guidelines and submit it here.

I tried a few years ago too and it took forever and they were not very good. Not worth the time and effort I put in to them! :( I will not attempt it again, sorry to say!

That is the recipe that I use too. They always come out wonderful.

this is the website i use for homemade bagels and they always turn out really awesome!

I used that one as well and ours also turned out good. In fact, I’m making more this week when I make soft pretzels, since you have to boil both of them in baking soda water . . .

Tammy L January 26, 2011 at 12:29 am

Yay! Jenni… what recipe do you use for your soft pretzels? :)

Jenni January 26, 2011 at 10:23 am

I think it was this one – I didn’t think it was too time consuming, but what I usually do is just make the dough sometime in the morning and then boil and bake them during afternoon naps. A nice way to wake up for the little ones . . . these also froze really well and reheated like fresh ones in a toaster oven.

I have a bagel recipe that works well too, but I’ve never thought of making soft pretzels while I’m at it…. Thanks so much for the idea!

I always make bagels and the first few didnt turn out great, but if at first you dont suceed try again , they are worth doing, I also make yogurt cheese for them and that is so much better than cream cheese… give them another try…

Kate January 26, 2011 at 10:11 am

@Margaret – Could you provide the recipe for the yogurt cheese, please? I have been trying to find a good recipe, but I’m just not happy with the results.

Jenni January 26, 2011 at 11:04 am

Yes, I’m interested in this too . . .

my family LOVES the homemade version I make! It is pretty simple, though it does take time to rest and rise, etc. I usually put sauted onions or cheese on top of mine and make them as bialys (no hole, no boiling), but they are very similar to bagels.

the recipe I use is here: http://smittenkitchen.com/2009/03/bialys/

the photos of my outcome and any changes made are here: http://www.choosingsimplicity.com/2009/04/garlic-cheese-bialys-bagels/

well, i tried bagels several years ago too, and mine were also a flop! I’ve been too gun-shy to try again–I put it in your category of why you don’t make homemade tortillas ;)

I might give these a try when my grandparents come out next month. I LOVE my blueberry or honeywheat bagels! I use them to make sandwiches; toast ‘em, add mayo, add BLT and meat, makes the perfect sandwich!!!

I’ve made bagels from scratch. The recipe is very similar to soft pretzels, except you must proof the bagels overnight. They turned out delicious!

I make homemade bagels all the time, and personally I just this

http://www.melindalee.com/index.php?option=com_garyscookbook&Itemid=6&func=detail&id=161

its a non-complicated recipe. I was actually crazy enough to choose this as my first attempt at bread. Even rushed I’ve never had this recipe really fail one me. The worst result has been smaller bagel that didn’t quite rise enough – but they still taste awesome. I don’t normally cook a lot with whole wheat, but I think I did supplement whole wheat in these once when I realized I was out of white flour. (Whole wheat goes in my doggie biscuts…)

Oh these look yummy! I’ve gotten into making our own breads, rolls, and even croutons lately. Might just have to give these a try!

Holly January 25, 2011 at 10:03 pm

I’ve made bagels only twice and they turned out great. The first time I used this one from All Recipes. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Bread-Machine-Bagels/Detail.aspx. I think I used half whole wheat flour. The second time I made a slight variation of these. Very easy and finished in less than 3 hours. I like that I can make different sized bagels for the smaller kids, plus different topics for different family members.

Jen January 25, 2011 at 10:09 pm

All I can say is YUM. Well, not really. They are time consuming. Wondering if you can have a permanant recipe area so we can refer back to these great recipes in the future?

Check the header. The “From My Kitchen” section has all recipes and kitchen stuff I link to. The DIY link under “Simple Living” has all the DIYs I link to. And there is also a categorized recipe section under “From My Kitchen” for the recipes I post.

I hope that helps!

I always use this recipe:

http://heavenlyhomemakers.com/honey-whole-wheat-bagels

No overnight and turn out great every time. I can’t seem to get the hang of making bread come out right, but even I can make these bagels!

Spendwisemom January 26, 2011 at 9:11 am

I have made bagels for years. I used to use the boiling method before baking, but then I talked to our grocery store that had the best bagels and they said that they didn’t boil them. So, I don’t boil them any more. They may not be as authentic, but they work wonderfully every time and taste great and I save tons of money making my own bagels.

Anna January 26, 2011 at 7:46 pm

When you try bagels again, consider trying your recipe with some bread flour. I’ve only made bagels once (I used bread flour and they turned out great), but I’ve used bread flour in some other “crusty” type breads and it seems to really help.

I look forward to trying the Jaime’s whole wheat recipe!
