S'mores in a jar

The following idea was submitted by Heidi:

Capture the yumminess of s’mores in a jar to be made at the recipient’s leisure!

In a Mason jar, layer in this order:

  • 1/3 cup graham crackers, crushed (on the bottom)
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups of Holiday M & M’s
  • top is off with mini marshmallows

On the tag, it should read:

S’mores in a Jar

Combine ingredients of the jar with 1/2 cup of melted butter and 1 tsp. vanilla.

Press mixture into 9-inch square baking pan.

Place the marshmallows on top.

Bake at 350 for 15 minutes. Cool completely.

Cut into bars and enjoy!

The jars, ingredients and decor were less than $5 each:

  • I bought the Mason Jars at Walmart , and had a $1 off coupon.
  • I bought the M & M’s at Walgreens, with a coupon and a Register Reward.
  • I bought the Avery Labels from Walmart, and got them for free with the $5 off coupon.
  • I decorated the jars with ribbon and Jingle bells from the Dollar Store. $1 for a roll of ribbon and $1 for four of the cute jingle bells!
  • I finished it off with the labels from Vistaprint, for free! Instead of making an address label, I made labels that read “Merry Christmas from the Evans Family”.

I am giving these to all my kids teachers, bus driver, my son’s babysitter and my co-workers this year. They are affordable, adorable and took me five minutes to make one jar! -Heidi

I hope to try them – looks fun!

Denise December 10, 2010 at 4:24 pm

The idea is clever. I’m a little skeptical about how they taste. Has anyone tried these?

Andrea Leland December 10, 2010 at 5:21 pm

These are very cute! I love the idea, and they look nice in the jar, perfect for a gift.
Thanks so much for sharing,
Andrea

This is so awesome! Is there anyway you can list this as a category for quick reference on your blog (different types of Christmas gifts to give to teachers and etc. without having to spend too much money)? I am not crafty at all and this is something definitely worth spending time on. I am wanting more ideas like this.

Thank you!!

Cute and tasty I’ll bet. Target has a clear package of bells – I think six in the package – in their Dollar spot this year.

Erin December 10, 2010 at 6:59 pm

Too cute!

So creative and fun! Love it. I too have used Vistaprint to make some cute Christmas labels. Thanks for sharing this idea!!

This is an awesome idea! I have a quick question though. The directions say mix all ingredients, but then say put marshmallows on top, this is confusing me. Can anyone help? Thanks

Denise December 10, 2010 at 10:18 pm

@Stephanie F, I would change the directions to say, “combine ingredients of the jar (except marshmallows) with 1/2 cup melted butter…”

Angie December 13, 2010 at 2:24 pm

@Denise, Yeah – I thought the same thing. I read these comments to see if someone else would mention it. I guess I’m not the only one who’s very literal : )

Such a cute idea! I have little money to spend on my family gift’s this year but I definitely am going to make these! I love to make homemade things for people and this is an awesome idea!

Just need some clarification on the directions – should the marshmallows be kept to the side so the pan can be topped with the marshmallows? Otherwise, the directions read to combine the ingredients of the jar together (including the marshmallows) and then you’re supposed to add the marshmallows to the top? Thanks!

Megan December 10, 2010 at 9:49 pm

Okay, this just in – I made this tonight to test it out and I ended up using over a cup of crushed grahams and it barely covered the bottom of the pan. Other than that it was okay!

Denise December 10, 2010 at 10:15 pm

@Megan, How did they taste?

Sandy December 11, 2010 at 8:22 am

Looks super festive!

Cherie December 11, 2010 at 9:48 pm

I just made these tonight and I added 1/2 cup of butter (or 1 stick of butter) and it is swimming in butter! I combined the graham crackers, brown sugar, vanilla & butter and then put the marshmallows on top. IF I make them again I will cut the butter way back. The bummer is I just bought all of the ingredients to put in mason jars! I should have tried it before I went to the store.

Ashley turner December 12, 2010 at 10:51 pm

@Cherie, where did u add the m&m when u made it?

Ashley turner December 12, 2010 at 10:42 pm

would that be one bag of m&m each jar?

Mandy December 13, 2010 at 7:22 pm

What size mason jars should I use? Pint or Quart?! I’ve bought both and cannot for the the life of me figure out what to do. One appears to be too big; the other too small. Help!!!

Tammy Nelson December 13, 2010 at 8:56 pm

So after trying this and having my ingredients “swim” in butter I searched online, most of the recipes I found call for 1 1/2 cups of graham crackers and 1 1/2 cups of marshmallows. The other ingredients were the same. Will try again tomorrow. :)

Kaitlyn December 16, 2010 at 7:09 pm

Does anyone else think the butter should be cut back?

Andrea Leland December 16, 2010 at 2:42 pm

I made these, and there didn’t seem to be enough graham cracker crumbs. It also seemed to be way tooo much butter.
Maybe it was sup. to more crumbs and less butter? I would guess it needs at least 1 cup of crumbs and 4 tbsp of butter.

I wonder if there was are typos in the recipe. I am disappointed I wasted so many m&ms on these.

Perhaps someone can find out what the right amounts are and fix the above recipe so noone else makes the same errors.
