Yahoo! Walgreens has posted their official coupon policy on their website!
You’ll especially want to notice the following:
::When items are featured in a Buy One, Get One Free promotion, up to two coupons can be used against the items being purchased, as long as the net price does not go below zero for the items being purchased.
::When purchasing a single item, Walgreens accepts one manufacturer coupon and applicable Walgreens coupon(s) for the purchase of a single item, unless prohibited by either coupon offer.
::The coupon amount must be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied. (For example, a $5.00 coupon for a $4.99 item will result in a $4.99 coupon value).
Print this out and take it with you when you shop. And if your store is saying they can’t reduce a coupon or accept two coupons on a Buy One, Get One Free sale or that they can’t accept a manufacturer’s coupon and a Walgreens coupon, well, now you have a written corporate policy to show your cashier or manager.
Thanks, Rosie!

Thank you for posting this! I’ve emailed twice trying to get the policy to post but I kept getting the run around. I’ll be posting this today~
Can you give an example of how/why you would use 2 coupons in a BOGO situation? Thanks!
@Terri,
I have done this at walgreens w/o any problems in the past but the Lysol cleaners were B1G1 so I had 2 cleaners and I used 2 ($1 off coupons) eventhough the price of one was listed as 0.00
So if something is on sale for B1G1 free, then you can use a B1G1 free coupon, but not a 2nd coupon for say $1 off, because that would be a moneymaker, right?
@Blaire Ruch, Hi Blaire,
the reading on this is still unclear. They are saying that:
*you are allowed 1 coupon per item (so yes)
*coupons can’t exceed the value of the item purchased (so no)
*coupons can’t exceed the value of the transaction (so if you have a filler yes)
I’m guessing this will be an area where YMMV, but either way it is clear that you can use your own BOGO Q to get 2 free, whereas up until now many stores wouldn’t allow this. You can always try and if the coupon beeps, just take it back and be happy with your 2 free.
@Cricket, It doesn’t say transaction, it’s talking solely about the two items purchased in a B1G1 promotion. To me, it reads that they will not allow a 2nd coupon, if using the 2nd coupon brings the cost lower than zero on those two items purchased as part of the B1G1 promo.
Yay! So this means we don’t have to buy a filler anymore if our coupon is worth more than the price of what we are buying! I am so printing this! Thanks for posting!
@Elisa, See the full post on their website it sounds to me like you still cannot exceed # of items and number of coupons I could be reading wrong
I wondered about this too. Here is what it says regarding the total number of coupons: The number of manufacturer coupons, including Register RewardsTM manufacturer coupons, may not exceed the number of items in the transaction. The total value of the coupons may not exceed the value of the transaction.
@Amy, Yeah, I figured on still having to have no more coupons that items. But if I bought, say, a tube of toothpaste that was $.99, and I had a coupon for $1 off, I won’t have to get a filler to eat the $.01 overage from the coupon — they can just adjust it down now. Yay!
fabulous!! now i have some leverage at our walgreens for #3. =) thanks!
I must admit that I was impressed by Walgreens recently. The store closest to me refuses any and all internet printed coupons. I thought this was strange since Walgreens offers such coupons on their website, so I emailed the company concerning this issue a couple of weeks ago. I hadn’t gotten a reply so I thought they’d forgotten about me until yesterday, when I got a phone call from my local district manager! He said he was going to talk to the store manager and get it handled. Very cool!
Thanks!
It’s a great week for coupon policies. I’m about to post the official Jewel-Osco policy on Frugalista.
Thank you for this information. Walgreen’s coupon policy should be posted in each store for the managers and cashiers to reference. Most of the Walgreen stores do not follow these guidelines because they do not understand how coupons work. The examples given are easily understood and should be distributed to all employees for clarification.
All I can say is Praise the Lord!
Thanks for this. I swore off Walgreens at the end of 2009 after a cashier refused a coupon because it was $.01 more than the value of the product. It was the first time it had happened to me and I simply asked her why she could not take the coupon and adjust it down and she flipped out on me and said she was so sick of “you people” (I guess meaning couponers??) trying to bend the rules and act as if they don’t apply. I simply asked why she could not take the coupon! An answer of “that’s our policy, ma’am” would have sufficed!
This is great! The Walgreens near me wouldn’t even accept ONE coupon for a BOGO promotion they were having. I had sworn them off but I’ll definitely print out the company’s policies for future purchases!
i’m SO glad they finally posted this! hopefully it’ll clear things up with some especially ditsy cashiers lol, its printed and going into my coupon pouch! Thanks for posting
This is great! I just had a really embarassing experience the other day when a cashier and manager refused to accept my $2 Listerine coupon because the sale made it $1.99. I asked if they could just reduce the coupon for the $0.01 overage and the manager went off saying several times how that would be fraudulent (which I just don’t understand because this is the policy at several other retailers). A long line had formed and I know they could all hear her using the “F” word (fraud) directed at me. I felt like a criminal just for trying to use a coupon!
I’ve had the “F” word used also…LOL! When trying to use a BOGO coupon with BOGO promotion I was told it was fraud because I wasn’t actually buying anything… Going to go print my policy now
@Amanda, you’re not the only one! I had the SAME thing happen today with the Airwick iMotion coupons. The cashier told me that I couldn’t use a $4 coupon on an item that was on sale for $3.99. I calmly stated that it was my understanding that she could adjust the coupon down to $3.99. She huffed and said “That’s coupon fraud. You should be arrested for that!” Then she rolled her eyes and scanned the coupons anyway, giving me the full $4 off. She was the store manager, so I’m going to have to call and report the incident to her corporate supervisor. I’m glad to have an official coupon policy now that I can take with me to the store.
Thanks! I printed it off and am headed to stick it in my coupon box right now! I have backed off of Walgreens a lot recently because I seem to often have trouble with one coupon or another. Hopefully this will make things easier!
My walgreens manager recently told me they won’t let me roll my register rewards (use ones I just earned on the very next transaction) because they were losing money. The online policy does not seem to address this – any ideas? Has anyone else heard this?
@Michelle, I had this happen also. Never used to be a problem and then when I tried it a few weeks ago the manager actually said to me “Haven’t you gotten enough out of us?” I only did it three times for three different items. My husband actually called and they told him that was the new policy at their store. It is out of my way so I don’t miss having to drive there anymore.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Thanks! I’m going to print this and keep in my purse. Where I live, there are 2 Walgreens with in a 2 mile radius of each other and one will accept internet coupons and the other will not. Now that I have something in writing, I’m willing to brave the coupon “un-friendly” store!!
I am so glad to have this now. I have been having so many problems at different Walgreens stores.
The only thing I’m still unclear about is the BOGO FREE coupon. If I have a BOGO FREE coupon to use for an item, can I use a 1.00 off coupon for the other item? or does the BOGO FREE coupon go for BOTH items? I’ve been told yes and also been told no. Please help! Thanks!
Have to admit even though there coupon policy is out, I still would hesitate shopping there. When I first started this couponing thing I forget about the filler and the cashier told me…” okey, hurry up you’re slowing my line!” There are 3 stores near me but in my opinion CVS is still better. Not only they are more coupon friendly, cashiers friendly, and a better sales….
Thank you so much for posting this!! you are the best:)
Thanks so much for posting this. I absolutely despise going to our Walgreens (the cashiers and managers are rude as I’ll get out). Maybe this will make them straighten up
I love Wags! The worst experience I’ve ever had was when I told the cashier I couldn’t find an item (that I wasn’t too worried about) and they didn’t say anything…but I think she was new, too. Their cashiers are always friendly to me, and I bring stacks of coupons, do up to 6 transactions sometimes, and I have 3 small kids! And the experience has been great at, let’s see, at least four different locations around town! But I plan very carefully, and make sure I have enough fillers and what-not to streamline as best I can.
Finally! I might even consider not banning them anymore due to total annoyance with their coupon hating clerks & lack of a policy
It’s hard to type a comment when you are doing the happy dance! Thank you soooo much for posting this! I am lucky to have two Walgreens nearby, one that treats customers with respect, the other has a new young manager who has raised my hackles on more than one occasion with rules she “makes up” as she goes along. They include: no internet printed coupons due to fraud, No coupon will be adjusted, so I am unable to purchase an item with a $1.00 coupon on a 99 cent sale item. I have missed out on great deals for school supplies because of her. Then she decided that if they were out of stock on a sale item, even if it said limit 6, I could only have a raincheck for 1. Sometimes she refused to give me a raincheck at all, saying they don’t provide rainchecks. Now she drives me crazy by asking “”Are you still finding everything you are looking for?” 5 or 6 times during one store visit. We couponers are too strong to be killed by kindness of this sort, aren’t we? Smiles. Is someone going to forward these comments to Walgreens corporate? I think they need to know how customers are being treated.
I think people are still confused by the BOGO situation. I think what the policy is talking about is not when you have a BOGO coupon, but when they have a BOGO sale item you may use a coupon for each item.. I still expect to be told that if I had my own BOGO coupon it would NOT be accepted. I think they would accept 2′ $1.00 off coupons etc….. but again it doesn’t state that a BOGO is acceptable or not acceptable. Therefore you may be able to use it but a 2nd coupon would not be acceptable to use since it would then be a moneymaker.
Also as others have said you will still need “fillers” if you have both WAGS coupons and MQ’s for the same item.
Thank you! Ive’ gone rounds with Walgreens to the point I stopped going there. Like Walmart I’m constantly told NO we cannot adjust the coupon down for a penny because your asking us to commit FRAUD. I will try and remember to bring this policy with me. It gets really old fighting with even managers. One night Target tried to argue and when I whipped out their coupn policy they became silent.
Thank you so much for posting this!!!! I have had the WORST trouble with Walgreens… always telling me they can only accept one coupon for each item purchased.. this happens every time I try to use and in store coupon forcing me to purchase another item, usually a pack of gum to get the additonal discount. Craziness. And even better I am sure they have me tagged as the crazy nagging coupon lady. Thanks so much, I intend to take and present to avoid any further problems!!!
