Weekend Giveaway: 20 bags of Coach’s Oats

Our family recently got to try a bag of Coach’s Oats. They were interesting, that’s for sure. They are prepared differently than typical oats we’ve eaten before and have a unique taste and texture.

From the Coach’s Oats website:

Lynn and Bonnie Rogers invented Coach’s Oats in their home kitchen in 1992. Lynn was the women’s gymnastics coach at California State University-Fullerton, where he was known by most as “Coach.” Bonnie worked as a graphic designer.

That winter, they decided to make a special holiday breakfast for their friends. Coach and Bonnie loved steel-cut oatmeal, but it took too long to cook, and rolled oats turned mushy and pasty. So they did what Coach always taught his athletes to do: They went back to basics.

Coach and Bonnie experimented with different ways of grinding, sifting and cooking whole oats called groats. After a lot of hard work, they tried something new. They put the oats into the oven before grinding them, and… magic! The oatmeal was textured, nutty and flavorful. It didn’t become soggy or pasty, and it took only a few minutes to cook.

What’s The Difference Between Steel Cut Oats, Rolled Oats and Coach’s Oats?

Steel Cut Oats: Like any oats they start out in their whole grain form, groats. Steel blades cut the groats into smaller pieces, thus the name. Steel cut oats do not contain more nutrients than rolled oats; their benefit comes from their taste and texture. The texture is thicker, not mushy, and the oats contain a heartier flavor. Traditional steel cut oats take 30 to 45 minutes to cook on the stovetop only.

Rolled Oats: Like steel cut oats, the oats are first cut with steel blades, then “rolled” flat. Probably the most recognizable form of oats, they are rolled simply to decrease cooking time. The oats still contain the same nutrients but lose their natural texture and nutty flavor like steel cut oats.

Coach’s Oats: Coach’s Oats are prepared in a completely different way. Our patented process begins with the groats and toasting them. Toasting the groats brings the natural sugars to the surface. Next the oats are cracked into small pieces. Coach’s Oats oatmeal contains the natural nuttiness and texture of steel cut oats and cooks quickly like rolled oats. That’s right! Our oats cook in 3 to 5 minutes in a microwave or on the stovetop.

What I thought was amazing about these oats was that they could be stretched farther than typical oats. It only takes 1/3 cup of dry Coach’s Oats to make a full one-cup serving of oatmeal. Whereas, with rolled oats, it takes a 1/2 cup.

That said, they are a little pricier than I usually pay for oats. But it’s still quite economical: a serving of Coach’s Oats costs around $0.13 — which makes for a heart, healthful and frugal breakfast!

Would you like to win a free bag of Coach’s Oats? I’m giving away 20 bags this weekend. Just click on the graphic below and type in your name and email address and you’ll be entered to win. A bag contains around 34 servings of oatmeal, so if you win, you should be set for breakfasts for a little while. :) 20 winners will be randomly chosen and posted on Monday.

Sounds great. I love both rolled oats & steel cut oats, although they are quite different. I am a Bob’s Red Mill fan but I just might have to buy some Coach’s Oats. The nutty flavor & quick cooking are intriguing. And my husband is a CSUF alum, and if they are anything like my husband, they must be great!

Sounds yummy. I’m getting married in a few months and I’ve started stockpiling pantry items so we don’t have so much start up cost!

Maybe using oat like these would mean using less sugar in oatmeal cookies. I’ve never heard of them before.

Oatmeal that isn’t sticky….now that actually sounds good. I just can’t get past the texture of rolled oats unless it is baked into something. I’d love to try coach’s oats- the “nutty flavor sounds amazing.”

Even if I don’t win, I’d like to try them- this sounds great!
