Amazon.com: Free one-year Amazon Prime membership for college students

by Crystal on July 14, 2010

If you’re a college student and you order from Amazon (perhaps with free gift cards from Swagbucks?), you’ll definitely want to sign up for a free one-year Amazon Prime Membership. This membership gives you a free two-day shipping upgrade on all orders. I’ve gotten three free months of Prime before and loved it!

To get your free Prime membership, you’ll need to:

  • Have an Amazon.com account
  • Be a college student actively enrolled in at least one course at a college geographically located in one of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia
  • Be able to provide proof of enrollment upon request
  • Valid .edu e-mail address
  • Specify college, year and major

I’m a grad student, and I signed up for this offer. It was so easy, and I’m really excited to use it, especially when I order books in the fall!

Danielle July 14, 2010 at 7:51 am

I would love to use this since I am a grad student, but we already have Amazon Prime. Does anyone know if I signed up for this if it would just add a year onto our Prime account?

Heather July 14, 2010 at 8:15 am

@Danielle, it might if you already use your .edu email address to log in. Unfortunately, I don’t and I had to sign up for a new Amazon account to use this. I like having all of my old preferences already set, but for 2 day free shipping, I’m all for re-entering some information! :)

kelly July 14, 2010 at 2:53 pm

@Heather, I didn’t have to use a new account for Amazon. I just logged in with my regular user name and then entered my school email when prompted…..

Jenny July 14, 2010 at 9:49 am

@Danielle,
I already had Amazon Prime and when I signed up as a student. After I joined Amazon Student, I immediately got an email that said my current Amazon Prime had been cancelled and I’d received a partial refund since I’ve already used it several times.

My Amazon Prime membership was reset to expire a year from yesterday.

Rebekah July 14, 2010 at 9:55 am

@Danielle, A fellow grad student of ours just added it and he said that it automatically credited back the remaining portion of his standard Amazon Prime subscription, which he had renewed in April ($59!).

Wow, thanks so much for posting. I am a graduate student as well and I loved my free trial of Amazon Prime. Thanks again.

Megan July 14, 2010 at 8:52 am

So glad to see that other graduate students were able to sign up – that was going to be my question! My husband’s in med school and I’m writing my dissertation, so free+fast shipping will be VERY welcome in this household! Thanks so much!

Suzanne July 14, 2010 at 8:57 am

Thanks for sharing this!

Kim July 14, 2010 at 9:32 am

My husband is getting his doctorate and we were able to sign up. We did not have to create a new account even though the email address associated with the account was not the .edu address. When we filled out the form, it asked for an .edu address and we gave it to them. We also had to verify through the .edu address, but we were able to still keep the account with our original email address. This was a great deal!

Cary July 14, 2010 at 2:12 pm

Does anyone know if you can add users like with regular Prime?

This is a great deal. I share prime with my brother, and I was not wanting to pay for it again this year.

kelly July 14, 2010 at 3:00 pm

@Cary, Yes, you can. Just log in and go to your account, and go to “manage prime account”. You can add up to 4 “household” users there.

Carrie July 14, 2010 at 9:37 pm

Awesome! Thanks so much!

I already had an Amazon account and didn’t have to change my e-mail for that or anything — just entered in my .edu address, verified it, and that was that! Easy peasy!

Does anyone know if this only applies to orders from Amazon? or does it apply purchases from third parties on Amazon, too?

Ashley July 19, 2010 at 12:42 pm

@Roanna,

It only applies to items that are Amazon.com fulfilled (meaning it ships from one of their warehouses). There are some third party sellers who have their orders shipped by Amazon and on those you will see a “Sold by ______, and fulfilled by Amazon.com. Eligible for free shipping with Amazon Prime.”
You will see an example at this link: http://www.amazon.com/Webkinz-HM361-Guinea-Pig/dp/B0020PQZWK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1279564779&sr=8-1

Hope that helps!

Mandy July 17, 2010 at 6:53 am

So is this just a free upgrade for shipping? Or is shipping completely free on purchased items? Does it include 3rd party stores on Amazon?

Thanks for any imput!! I’m a student and would love to have this available if it’s free shipping!!

Ashley July 19, 2010 at 12:41 pm

@Mandy,

Amazon always offers free ground shipping on Amazon.com fulfilled orders over $25. With prime shipping you get free 2 day shipping on any Amazon fulfilled item. So if you need a book that costs $5 you get it for $5 with free shipping. It is very handy!

I was super excited to find this awesome deal. I love shopping on Amazon and have considered getting the Amazon Prime mebership many times in the past but have always hesitated because of the price. I love getting free things!!

Sue July 23, 2010 at 12:18 pm

Thank you!! I am so excited to use, and it was easy to sign up under my original account. I will be sharing this with all of my “adult learner” friends :)
