Hooked on Phonics has their Learn to Read Kindergarten to 2nd Grade program (2006 version) reduced from $199.95 to $59.95. Plus, when you use coupon code SLICK50, you’ll get an additional 50% off that clearance price — making it only around $30!

I’ve heard rave reviews about this particular program so this is a great deal if you have a child who is learning to read.

You can also use the coupon code SLICK50 to get 50% off almost anything else on the Hooked on Phonics site — including the clearance and sale items.

It’s found under the “overstock” category on the left.

Sara Childs June 7, 2010 at 1:49 pm

We bought the full kindergarten version (the newer one, as the older one won’t work on our computers anymore). It was still a good deal after the 50% discount. My son comes to me everyday asking to read! He is starting kindergarten this fall, and he is reading well. When you add in the extras you get online (printable worksheets, videos, extra short stories), it is a great deal!

@Sara Childs, Thank you so much for the warning! It will not run on our machines, either.

Shannon June 8, 2010 at 10:00 am

@Andrea Q,
I did call HOP and ask them if the system would work with xp or even windows seven for that matter and they said it would work. So you can order the older version with no worries.

Andrea Q June 8, 2010 at 7:26 pm

@Shannon, Thanks, but we use Macs. It specifically states that it won’t run on the newer Intel Macs (which is what we have). It was nice of you to come back and post what you found out! :)

This is great! My kids (22 m and 3 yrs) already love letters and sounds and I think this will be a great addition to our activities!

I am only pregnant, but already tempted by this. . . I know time flies, but really, how many times will we move houses b/f my unborn child is old enough to use this???? haha

Andrea Q June 7, 2010 at 4:59 pm

@Amanda C., Sara mentioned above that this older version won’t work on her computers. When your baby is ready to read, it is unlikely that you’ll have the right computer to run the software…just a thought. Congratulations!

@Amanda C., I just purchased this today, so I can’t specifically comment on this, but I have the Your Baby Can Read DVDs (you’ve probably seen commercials). I started using them when my little one was less than a year old (mayb as early as 6 or 8 months). Even before she saw the DVS, she loved flash cards, etc. Since this comes with a book, I can imagine you can use that early on.

@Amanda C.,
My 2.5 yr old is reading beause of Hooked on Phonics…
I think most kids can get into it by 3 or 4 at least, so it will be sooner than you might think.
It’s a tiny box… so I think it’s a great investment.
HOWEVER, you do have a while to look for a better deal. My first set of Hooked on Phonics is from 1995, and my little girl is still using it. It still works (with tiny glitches) on my computer). I got the set for $4.50 at a second hand store, and she begs to play it and read her books every day.

Whar comp does it run on? Does it say on the website what kind of specs I need?

Jessica June 7, 2010 at 6:00 pm

it should work on any computer that is 98/2000 or NEWER…if you have a newer computer you should be able to use it. For instance I have a laptop that is very up to date (Hubby works in IT) and i can run anything thats a later version than mine. just thought id add my 2 cents :)

Andrea Q June 7, 2010 at 10:35 pm

@Jessica, We use Macs. It specifically says “except Macs with Intel” and states that it runs in “Classic” mode. We have an Intel Mac and cannot run “Classic” mode. Oftentimes, software is not backwards compatible (even with Windows machines).

Thanks so much for posting this deal! We’re starting to homeschool kindergarten in the fall and this is perfect!

Kristin June 8, 2010 at 5:29 am

If you have or know anyone with kids this age, GET THIS SET!!! Someone gave us HOP for Kindergarten just after my daughter turned two. I pulled it out just to see what it was like and she fell in love. She was reading by two and a half! We’re now through the first grade set, and she’s not even 5 yet. Their products are excellent, the lessons are short and keep kids’ attention, and help them to love reading.

Lisa June 8, 2010 at 6:42 am

I have a friend who passed this along to me for free (oh, thank you!!!). It is a GREAT product! I have some Hooked on Phonics products that I was not as impressed with. This is definitely worth it! This is a great price for the 3 grades, I recommend it highly! My son just turned 5 and is homeschooled. I just could not find readers that were right for learn-to-read level. We were doing good with sight words, but I didn’t have books that incorporated the sight words we were working on. This program does that. These are exactly what we needed and he couldn’t be more excited. He asks to practice – how great is that!

There is also a code SAVE40 that is good on ANY order.

Shauneef June 8, 2010 at 7:32 am

$40.24 shipped, thanks!!

Here’s the requirements, from their website. If you had an older computer and wanted to devote that just to kids’ stuff, you could always make sure it had an older OS on it to run that program.

* Pentium® Class 133 MHz or higher
* 32-MB RAM
* 20-MB free hard-drive space
* 4X CD-ROM drive
* 16-bit depth graphics
* 640×480 display
* 16-bit sound card
* Standard keyboard and mouse
* 2-MB video card

Macintosh System Requirements

* Mac OS version 7.6 through 10.3
* This program runs in Classic mode for all versions of Mac OS 10 through 10.4 except for Macs with Intel
* 120-MHz PowerPC 603e or higher
* 32-MB RAM
* 20-MB free hard-drive space

* 16-bit sound card
* Standard keyboard and mouse
* 2-MB video card

Was just at Tuesday Mornings and picked this up for my son for $19 and got the hooked on math for $9.

Brooke June 8, 2010 at 2:17 pm

I bought it last night!! Such a great deal for what you get!! Can’t wait!! Thank you!!

Jessica June 8, 2010 at 5:13 pm

if you also have a newer machine with “compatability mode” you can run this. It all depends on your OS and you should know before buying it though…i 100% agree. Just for us i know with my new machine i can run it….and i got several clearence items and it took 50% off EVERYTHING in my order!!! $80 purchase for $40, cant beat that! I got the set above, the toddler set and some flashcards with animals on them :) i was debating on “your baby can read” but convinced DH this was a better deal and more of a sure thing :)

JuliB June 17, 2010 at 9:51 pm
