ThredUp: Swap children’s clothes & earn a $5 credit today!

by Crystal on April 22, 2010

ThredUp is a brand-new children’s clothing swap site that I’m really excited about! Here’s what their press release says:

ThredUP is where America’s busiest parents exchange boxes of clothes that no longer fit their kids for stylish ones that will. We coordinate swaps among a group of your closest friends or connect you with thousands of families nationwide. There’s no bidding, no auction lots, no rifling through consignment racks, and absolutely no trips to the post office. All swaps are done online, with scheduled home pick-up and delivery. ThredUP is the next generation of swapping – a kids clothing revolution!

For only the cost of shipping a box of clothes, you can swap for another box of clothes in the size and season you need for your child! I tried out the service myself and was really impressed. In fact, I may very well begin using this for quite a bit of my children’s clothes “shopping”. What could be easier than ordering and shipping stuff without leaving my home? With three young children, that’s a huge plus for me! My first box of clothes is on its way right now so I’m anxious to see what I think of it.

If you’ve been cleaning out your children’s closets this week and have some extra clothes in good condition, this might be a perfect opportunity for you! Plus, when you sign up today (Thursday, April 22, 2010), you’ll get a free $5 credit added to you account for listing a box of clothes!

Sign up for a free account here to check it out.

Please note: ThredUp gave me an exclusive link so you all could sign up for this invite-only site. They also gave me a credit to have one box shipped to me for free so I could try out this service. However, I was not monetarily compensated for writing this post nor am I compensated if you sign up for ThredUp. I was just impressed with this website and didn’t want to keep a good thing to myself!

This seems like a fun idea. Unfortunately, I just sold the kids clothes at a local conisgnment sale a few weeks ago. It also looks like there aren’t any boxes for the sizes I need right now. I’ll keep it bookmarked though, and check back in later.

I went to their site and read about it, but honestly this doesn’t appeal to me. I enjoy rummage sales and consignment shops and I like to see what I’m getting before I commit. Also, at $13 for 10-18 items, true it is less expensive than consignment but more than I pay at a rummage sale or yard sale. I have a $.50 price maximum on baby clothes and $1 on toddler clothes. I think they are making money off the shipping, as 10 items of children’s clothing is not really going to cost that much to mail. It also doesn’t say how long it takes to get your box- are they mailing it first class / priority or is it going to take a month to get to you?

I’m trying out the service myself right now and am curious to see how it turns out. It was very appealing to me to be able to get a box of a season’s worth of clothes for $13. It seems like it would save me time and effort. But we’ll see what I think after I get my box of boy clothes. :)

How are you assured that what you get will be in good enough condition to use? I’ve bought clothes online that turned out to be faded and well-used when they arrived — enough times that it has made me wary of buying kids clothes sight unseen.

It seems like a good idea in theory, but you can get a better deal on clothes simply by shopping consignment or garage sales. I was out last week at one and was able to pick up 10 items for $5. $13 seems a little overpriced in comparison considering you are getting the same quality clothes and can’t even sell them.

Yes, but it might be worth a few extra dollars to shop from home, right? I often find it hard to get out and do a lot of shopping with three little ones so sometimes saving the time and effort is worth spending a little bit of extra money.

No credit :(

i don’t understand what the pro membership is? They are asking for $30 to list clothes that I pay to mail?

I love the idea of this, but would never use it. I get all my boys clothes from yard sales for .25 – .50 cents a piece and they are dressed stylishly and without any “trendy” charectors on their shirts or any childish looking things… I am too picky to get someone elses selection of clothes for my kids and this would cost way more than I currenly pay for styles that I love.
