Old El Paso Money-Maker at Kroger (elsewhere?)

by Crystal on January 26, 2010

You can make money buying Old El Paso products at Kroger (and possibly elsewhere) with the catalina deal that’s currently running. Here are the details:

Through February 21, 2010, when you purchase any 3 packages of Old El Paso Taco Shells, Dinner Kits, Seasoning, Refried Beans, or Heat & Serve Side Dishes, you’ll receive a coupon for $1 off your next order. When you purchase any 6 packages, you’ll receive a coupon for $3 off your next order.

The Heat & Serve Side Dishes are priced at around $1.25 at many stores, so you could do the following deal:

Buy 6 Heat & Serve Side Dishes at $1.25 each
Use 6 $0.50/1 coupons from the 1/10 SmartSource insert (doubled)
Spend $1.50 plus tax out of pocket, Get a $3 coupon off your next order
Free plus $1.50 money-maker after coupons and catalina (For those of you who are new here, the coupon which prints for $3 off your next order is called a “catalina”.)

You’ll also want to be on the lookout for peelies on the Heat & Serve boxes for free Old El Paso seasoning when you purchase two Heat and Serve products. If you find these, you could do the following deal:

Buy 4 Heat & Serve Side Dishes at $1.25 each
Buy 2 Old El Paso Seasoning packets at $0.60 each
Use 4 $0.50/1 coupons from the 1/10 SmartSource insert (doubled)
Use 2 free seasoning coupons
Spend $1 plus tax out of pocket, Get $3 catalina
Free plus $2 money-maker after coupons and catalina

It has been verified that this catalina deal is running at Kroger. However, usually catalina deals run at multiple stores. So if you discover it’s also running at another store, let us know.

Thanks, The Coupon “High”!

We don’t have a Kroger here, so the Catalina deal doesn’t work for me, but I received a $1 coupon in my paper, and they are priced at $1 at Walmart, so I got it for free–not bad! Thanks!

Karen January 26, 2010 at 7:33 am

I know Biggs is also running the Old El Paso cat deal. Thanks!

Ellen January 26, 2010 at 7:39 am

Are the green chilies included in this deal? I know there was a coupon floating around the blogosphere awhile back for the chilis.

Theresa Crist January 26, 2010 at 7:41 am

I wasn’t able to find the coupon at the provided link. I also looked on the Old El Paso site and wasn’t able to find it among their coupons. ? They may no longer be available.

Stephanie January 26, 2010 at 7:44 am

I couldn’t find the coupons? I tried no zip, 14414, and 45780.

Ginger January 26, 2010 at 7:44 am

The Dillons stores are also running this deal, but the catalina states it is $1.00 or $3.00 your next purchase of beef or chicken.

JR911 January 26, 2010 at 7:48 am

I couldn’t find the coupon either….any ideas?

Stephanie January 26, 2010 at 7:51 am

This is also working at Harris Teeter! The Old El Paso products are part of the GM buy 15 items, save $5 deal that ends today too.

Jenae January 26, 2010 at 7:55 am

I couldn’t find the coupons either.

Jamie January 26, 2010 at 7:56 am

My Wal-Mart has these for 60 cents each right now, paired the the 50 cent coupon I got 6 for 10 cents each! We had 2 of them (0ne rice, one beans) with dinner last night, they are pretty good!

Noelle January 26, 2010 at 7:59 am

Shoprite has a similar deal.
The difference is that the CAT is $1 or $3 off next Meat Purchase.
The prices on the Heat N Serve are still $1.99, so I’m hoping they might go on sale next week, to sweeten this deal!

melissa January 26, 2010 at 7:59 am

who has 6 qs? do you buy many papers each week???

:(

jen January 26, 2010 at 8:01 am

just a note… My kroger will only double up to 3 of the same coupon, so keep that in mind!

Eleanor January 26, 2010 at 8:04 am

My family & I love their Heat & Serve Mexican Rice. When I was at Kroger on Sunday they were out so I just held on to my coupons. Sadly – I accidently left my reamaining coupons in my cart!!! It had started to rain & they must have slipped down to the bottom of the cart when I was unloading my groceries & I missed them. I was bummed about it but now seeing this – I am really disapppointed! lol! I had 5 of those Old El Paso coupons! Well i’ll have to do some tracking down of new ones now!

:-)

heather January 26, 2010 at 8:05 am

Winn Dixie is doing this deal. 1/25-2/21
$1 off next chicken or beef purchase when you buy 3 pkgs
$3 off next beef or chicken purchase when you buy 6 pkgs

Brandy January 26, 2010 at 8:26 am

The catalina states it is $1.00 or $3.00 your next purchase of beef or chicken.

Unless you plan on donating these I would try each flavor to see if you like them. We tried all three types last night and HATED the fiesta rice (that is pictured). It was disgusting! The beans are okay, as is the mexican rice but I would’t even donate the fiesta rice it is so bad.

Kristin January 26, 2010 at 8:38 am

You can load 0.50 off any Old El Paso product from Cellfire onto your card. I don’t shop at Kroger, but if it works like Dominicks, the ecoupon comes off automatically and you can use another manu. coupon along with it.

Jenny January 26, 2010 at 8:43 am

And Meijer is running this same catalina deal as well.

Michelle January 26, 2010 at 8:45 am

The coupon was in my 1/3 SS instead of 1/10. Maybe some of you got it that week, too.

Melanie January 26, 2010 at 9:33 am

There is also a 50 cent discount on Old El Paso products at CellFire! :-)

Meghan January 26, 2010 at 10:01 am

Our Kroger only doubles the first three identical coupons, so the scenario you thought up would cost $3 out of pocket, with a $3 catalina printing. Still a great deal, but I wish Kroger would double all 6 coupons!

Meghan January 26, 2010 at 10:02 am

http://www.savvyspending-meghan.blogspot.com
Forgot to give my link.
I’ll be going to Kroger today to try this… maybe I’ll get lucky and more than three will double!

Ashley January 26, 2010 at 10:26 am

Most Krogers have a limit on how many like coupons they will double in one transaction, so this wouldn’t be a money maker at most store. At my store they will only double up to 2 like coupons, so for me the cost would be 3.50 OOP & then get the $3 catalina back. Still not a bad deal!

Wendi Sisson January 31, 2010 at 10:34 am

@Ashley, In my area the limit is 9 like coupons. And the register only enforces the limit if you buy more than 9 identical products with more than 9 identical coupons. If you have different flavors or varieties, it treats each as a different product/coupon combo. For example, if I have 10 identical coupons, I can buy 9 beans and 1 rice and they’ll all double. Might be worth an experiment to see if the registers work that way in your area too.

KC January 26, 2010 at 10:34 am

This is running at SuperFresh and Acme out East!

Angela January 26, 2010 at 10:42 am

Any idea if the Cat would also work at Kroger Affiliates? I have a Fred Meyer and QFC in my area. Might have to swing by Fred Meyer today and see if it’s working.

Thanks for the heads up!

Cheryl January 26, 2010 at 10:55 am

This is working at Giant Eagle also.
You get the catalina but it is for Giant eagle brands only

Kim January 26, 2010 at 11:32 am

My Kroger will only allow one double/triple coupon per item per transaction, so only one of the $.50 coupons will double for me. Still a decent deal, though.

Leigha January 26, 2010 at 11:47 am

Winndixie in Clanton, AL is running this same deal. I got a print out when I checked out this morning.

AKelly January 26, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Just FYI. My coupon insert coupon was in the 1/3 SS. I couldn’t find one in the 1/10 but knew I had seen it. So, if you don’t see yours in the 1/10, try the 1/3. I get the Richmond, VA paper.

Crystal January 26, 2010 at 12:13 pm

There is also a $0.50 off ANY Old El Paso eCoupon on Cellfire!

Jenny @ ThriftyJenny.com January 26, 2010 at 12:49 pm

The same deal is going for Krogers in the TX/LA region, but the catalina is good off your next purchase of beef or chicken so it is not really a true “money-maker” still a good deal though. Final price on the deal is $1.50 for 6 sides and a $3 worth of beef or chicken. http://thriftyjenny.blogspot.com/2010/01/kroger-great-deal-on-old-el-paso.html

Rita January 26, 2010 at 1:20 pm

Also good at Meijer.

Erin January 26, 2010 at 3:32 pm

Same deal at my local store Hornbacher’s in MN/ND. There is also a pillsbury deal going on until 2/21. Buy 4 get $2, buy 5 get $3, buy 6 get $4.

Nicole January 26, 2010 at 4:50 pm

what zip code do you use to get the El Paso coupons on the link?

Cassie January 26, 2010 at 8:44 pm

I went to Kroger and the Heat & Serve Side Dishes did not have the tag on them that said $1 after 3… so I went to Customer Service and asked, and she said No, only the one’s with the tags beneath them with produce the Catalina. I already had them all in my cart, so I checked out anyways and still got the Catalina. yay. Only problem, the Cellfire coupon did not work at all, so I ended up spending $3 more than I planned on for food that I don’t know we will even like. I guess I can open a complaint on Cellfire, but it says “Not valid with any other offers” – would this be considered another offer?

Wendi Sisson January 31, 2010 at 10:36 am

@Cassie, the cellfire coupon is for 50c and only comes off once, no matter how many you buy, so it would only have made a 50c difference, not 3.00.

Michelle January 26, 2010 at 11:18 pm

The Old El Paso heat & serve sides were regular price ($1.99) at my Kroger tonight (Gainesville, GA). They were on sale for $1.25 last week, but not anymore. It’s not worth it to me to pay several dollars oop to get back a $3 catalina.

Oh well.

constance January 27, 2010 at 5:08 am

This is working at Shaw’s, too. Right now Shaw’s has the heat and servers for 1.00 and doubles up to 6 coupons.

Jen January 27, 2010 at 9:23 am

I completely agree with Brandy. We tried the seasoned black beans and fiesta rice last night. The beans are okay, but the fiesta rice is TERRIBLE!! I don’t know who product tested this, but it has an aftertaste that is truly awful!

Also, my Cellfire coupon didn’t work either when I bought these last week (before I knew about the Catalina). I filed a complaint with Cellfire including all the information they ask for, UPC, receipt info, etc. and they sent me a ‘thank you’ coupon for $.50 to my account.

One thing to point out is that the Cellfire coupon is a “one and done” coupon. You do not get credited with a $.50 coupon for each product purchased, as it appears Cassie thought above.

Dianna January 27, 2010 at 11:05 am

Do u need to buy them all at once? I noticed that you doubled all of the coupons on the serino, my Kroger will only double the first on the same product. Do you now something that I don”t?

Andrea January 27, 2010 at 11:30 am

It works on the taco shells also. I bought 4 boxes of the taco shells (sounds like a lot, but we have six kids), 1 heat-and-serve black beans, and one taco seasoning, and got the catalina.

Andrea January 27, 2010 at 11:31 am

p.s. Kroger didn’t have these, but Meijer had peelies on the taco shells—buy two, get a free seasoning. If the catalina deal really does work there, that would be a pretty good deal.

Karen January 27, 2010 at 6:59 pm

At Acme (mid-Atlantic states) starting Friday, the OEP sides are $1.00. Acme will double an unlimited number of identical coupons (within reason, of course), so you can purchase 6 sides using 6 $.50/1 coupons for a ZERO oop cost, receiving a $3.00 catalina for meat or chicken. I will be donating the sides to the food bank and using the $3.00 catalinas for my family.

For the previous poster wondering where to find 6 identical coupons without buying 6 newspapers, you can find more coupons in many ways—begging friends/family/coworkers for their inserts, checking recycling areas or free local papers, trading for them on couponing discussion forums, or though coupon clipping sites.

Amy H. February 2, 2010 at 10:41 am

This cat deal is also running at Price Chopper — the $1 OYNO cat is advertised in their Checkout Rewards flyer, but i bought 6 things and got the $3 OYNO cat (for beef or chicken). There were b2g1 seasoning peelies too :)
