This post will stay at the top of the page all day today. Scroll down for the usual blog updates as I'll be posting them below this post.
You've seen the pictures, you've read the stories, and you can't
help but be heartbroken for the hundreds of thousands of people in
Haiti who have suffered tremendous loss this week. Loss we cannot even comprehend as we sit in our heated homes on our comfortable sofas with plenty of food to eat, a roof over our heads, and luxuries like access to the internet at our fingertips.
We all want to do something to help these people, but it can be a little overwhelming to even know where to start. There are hundreds of thousands of people in dire need.
However, while each of us likely don't
have the resources to feed, clothe, and provide medical services to
hundreds of thousands of people, if we all do something, we can and will make a difference.
So, today, I'm calling you to action. And here's what I'm asking you to do:
1) Pray–Pray
for these destitute people to have the provision they need. Pray for
the mothers and fathers who are left childless. Pray for the children
who are left motherless and fatherless. The heartache
and suffering they are experiencing is unimaginable to us.They need miracles; they need hope;
they need our prayers.
2) Give–There are so many different ways you can give and no matter your financial situation, there is something you do. Even if it seems like it's a drop in the bucket, remember that a bucket of water is made up of that–drops!
Here are three ways I would encourage you to give:
::Give to Compassion International, an organization dedicated to help children who are living in poverty. Our family has supported Compassion for quite some time and we feel they are truly wisely stewarding their resources to the best of their abilities.
All funds raised in response to the Haiti
earthquake will be used immediately to provide for Compassion-assisted
children and families affected by this crisis. Any funds raised in
excess will be stewarded by Compassion for additional and future
disaster relief efforts.
::Give to Numana, Inc., an organization dedicated to giving food to the starving. One of my friends works closely with Numana and I also believe this to be an organization worthy of your donations. They are currently providing thousands of meals to the people of Haiti. For only $0.30, you can donate one meal to a starving person in Haiti.
::Give to the Red Cross. You can donate online here or you can text “Haiti” to 90999 to send a $10 donation to the Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.
Some of my readers have told me they are eating from the pantry
this month and donating the extra to Haiti. One of my readers, who is
on a very limited budget, told me they donated their small amount of
"fun money" to help those in Haiti.
No matter the size of your budget, you can likely spare $1 or $2–which can go quite far in Haiti! Even if you can't afford to give money, you can likely come up with something you can do. Which is where point number 3 comes in…
3) Blog–Today I want to encourage you to blog about what you've done to help those in Haiti. I want to
hear your stories of how you are helping–even on a small budget. Get creative,
think outside the box, there's something everyone can do. And every
little bit helps!
Plus, for every person who blogs about what you specifically did to help
those in Haiti and leaves your link below by January 21, 2010, my
husband and I will personally donate $10 to Compassion's outreach in
Haiti.
If you don't have a blog, you can leave a comment on this post or email
me with details on what you specifically did to help. For every person
who comments or emails telling me what they did to help, my husband and
I will donate $0.30 to Numana to provide one meal for a starving person.
But wait, there's more–and this is the really exciting part!
Yesterday, I put a call out for other bloggers to team up with me in this "Help For Haiti" Project. I expected a few might come forward, but I was blown away at the response!
Are you ready for this? Every single one of the following bloggers have committed to donate to Haiti in some way, shape, or form to each person who stops by their blog and leaves a link or a comment:
The Simple Life of the Boreings
This is so incredible, folks! What are you waiting for? Do something and blog about it and then come back here and link up on this post and visit all the other bloggers above to link up as well.
THANK YOU for being a part of this exciting opportunity! Together, we can make a major impact in the lives of people who desperately need our help!

Donating items to MCC through our local agency, Cumberland Valley Relief Center.
My income is not very wiggly, so I am donating clothes via the Red Cross. Every bit helps, right?
I dropped off $20 yesterday to The Red Cross, and of course, praying. Thank you!!!
No blog but wanted to say bless you for your efforts in helping the people of Haiti!
Please add a donation for our comment. We are praying for the people of Haiti.
we donated through compassion international where we also sponsor 3 kids (not inHaiti though).
Thank you for doing this.
I gave $10 to the Red Cross and plan to give more through my church. I have so much, things like this sicken you as to how much you have and take for granted!!
This is a great thing you are doing! It also lets us poor college students to find a way to contribute.
I Thessalonoans 5:16-18 Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
My husband and I made a small donation. We are recently without a job and I am a stay at home mom. Thank you for doing this. You are a blessing.
This is fantastic that so many people are donation to Haiti! I gave money to Heart to Heart because it is local and their administrative costs are 2%. Thank you for doing this!
Thank you for doing this! Our family is donating through Compassion International.
thank you for doing this. i am amazed at the generosity of people like you, pioneer woman, sherri from swaggrabber, and others. i donated $25 to Doctors Without Borders myself, and click on http://www.thehungersite.com and its sister sites as often as i remember to.
I am donating my Swagbuck points to their fund and commenting on generous blogs like yours.
Great idea! Haiti has been on my heart all week and could not really blog about the rest of life! My past 2 blogs on my writing blog were focused on it as well as on my picture blog.
Thank you for caring and being so generous!! It is awesome to see!!! Love it! Great to see Jesus using people even in the blog world to represent HIM in a dark world to those who need His love and light! Thank you!
I did some mission work in Haiti with the Northwest Haiti Christian Mission located in St Louis De Nord Haiti – about 150 miles North of Port Au Prince. Their website has updates about what they are doing to help out in Port Au Prince and also accepts donations. http://www.nwhcm.org They are based in Kentucky, so you aren’t sending your credit card information overseas. I just thought I would provide another opportunity/place for people to give. I helped deliver babies by lamp light late at night after the generator went off for the night – I saw this mission do amazing things for those who needed food and education! When I was there they were opening a surgical suite and dental area so that they would be able to better serve the Haitian people!
My husband and I are donating some money to Compassion International! Thank you so much for doing this!
I work for a non profit Christian organization, Loving Shepherd Ministries. We are sending funds to enable our in-country Home of Hope families and missionaries are able to reach out to assist in this tragedy. Haiti certainly needs our prayers. http://www.loving-shepherd.org
I’m commenting in honor of Corey and her family. I’ve posted on every blog she asked us to and have donated to the Red Cross and Yele.
Giving to Compassion International. Thank you, everyone else, and Crystal and your husband.
I texted to give and also started a blogging effort today encouraging people to share their comments and join in. For every comment I get through Sunday evening, we will make a donation to the Red Cross. And we haven’t set a limit. My hope is that this will push us, in a very accountable, public way, to do more than we otherwise might have done.
Thanks for your generous spirit.
We gave $50 to Samaritan’s Purse. Thank you for the work you’re doing!
We donated to Chances for Children, a ministry that runs an orphanage outside Port au Prince: http://chances4childrendonations.blogspot.com/
One of the families in our homeschool group recently adopted two precious children from there. Bless you, Crystal, for applying your creativity and awesome networking skills to help those who are suffering. You are an inspiration!
I’m going to visit all of the links you have posted that are donating…thanks!
We donated $15 to the Red Cross along with a donation of all the Swagbucks that I had available. Thanks for your compassion. You’re wonderful!
Thank you so much for doing this!
My family donated $10 to the Red Cross and today we donated $1 at Harris Teeter… they are taking up donations at the registers, that makes it so easy to give!!
I have donated to Haiti by texting “Haiti” to the Red Cross, and by donating a bag of toiletries to a donation drive at the Haitian Embassy in D.C.
The one thing I’m doing is taking savings from the pantry challenges and sending them to Catholic Relief Services for Haiti Relief. I challenge all the pantry cleaning folks to do the same and support the relief organization of their choice!
I don’t have a blog, so I am commenting here. Sending $10 to Red Cross. What you are doing is awesome!
What a wonderful thing you are doing. I gave $10 via text to the Red Cross.
We don’t have a blog either. My husband and I will be giving money Sunday at our church to go to Jason Nightingale’s ministry in Haiti called Wordsower. Our prayers are going up for the people too.
We gave to CrossWorld Internation, a missions organization we have travel to the Dominican Republic with. Praying for Haiti.
I linked up above but my dad wanted me to tell you he donated! Thanks MSM!
I talked to my kids about it and they each decided to give $1.25 from their allowance (which is a lot for their small allowance!).
I posted a link on my Facebook status for friends to come check out this site and donate.
My husband and I will be adding to our children’s donations with one of our own. We will probably send it to Samaritan’s Purse or Compassion International.
I am about to go to other blogger’s sites so they will donate from my comments.
Thank you for all you are doing to help and encourage others to do the same!!
Thank you for doing this.
This is wonderful! It is great to see so many people involved because every little bit helps!
I’ve posted some links to credit/debit card companies that are waiving their merchant fees for the Haitian relief. This means that 100% of your donation via those cards will go to the charity of your choice.
I’ve also listed on my site a link to the BBB that lists all the reputable charities that you can donate to. If a charity you want to donate isn’t on the list then please be careful of donating.
Finally, NEVER donate cash to someone who comes to your door. Write a check or better yet donate online via debit/credit card.
Please remember folks, that while you may want to do the right thing to help there are many out there who are taking advantage of the situation in Haiti.
We’ve made a small donation to Doctors Without Borders USA (http://doctorswithoutborders.org/)
What an awesome way to contribute! My best friend and I, along with our husbands, have decided to donate all of our items we have been saving since last year for our annual community yard sale. We have managed to almost fill an entire 30×25 pole barn with clothes, toys, furniture, books, and other misc items. Instead of putting it in our yard sale this summer, we are boxing up everything and shipping it to Haiti. We wish we could give more, but understand that every little bit can help!
We donated money for disaster relief in Haiti via Sovereign Grace Ministries (http://www.sovereigngraceministries.org/About/FinancialSupport/DisasterRelief.aspx). Thanks for your encouragement!
I think what you are doing is wonderful. I went to Mass today and prayed for these people. I also donated to Catholic Charities for their benefit.
Bless you for doing this!
What an amazing response! I missed this yesterday, but my husband and I donated $25 to Week of Compassion. We are also praying daily. A friend who has search and resuce dogs has been sent by FEMA to assist in the search for people – we are also praying for her efforts.
Thanks for doing this
Thank you
Shop for Valentine’s Day and help the people of Haiti. For every Valentine’s Dessert Collection I sell between now and Jan. 25th, I will donate $10 (my commission) to the Red Cross for Haiti.
http://www.dove-chocolate-discoveries.com/sites/thechocolatemom
I donated to Heartline Ministries at http://haiti-relief.org.
I went to the Red Coss site and donated $50
Because I was inspired by your site, I’ve made January an Eat From Our Pantry month as well. We’re trying hard to get the last bit of our savings for a down payment on a new house (just 20% for now, but one day we’ll get to your 100% down goal!). Realizing just how blessed we are, we’ve decided to donate the unspent grocery budget funds towards Haiti relief instead of our house fund. How could we work towards a home when people don’t even have water?! Anyway, thanks so much for the continued inspiration and encouragement.
Swagbucks is now taking donations for Haiti through their program if you hadn’t heard. You can donate your swagbucks and it will go to the American Red Cross. A GREAT way to give monetarily without spending from your own pocket. And, if they collect 1 million in swagbucks donations, they will give 1 million dollars! So they are matching swagbucks to dollars if they reach that high. They are still matching pretty well under that, but dollar for buck if reaches 1 million. I hope this will inspire everyone to sign up and donate their swagbucks rather than cash them in on prizes. God bless!
I am commenting in honor of Corey and her family at Watching the Waters.
Wonderful idea – I joined along..# 358 in the carnival! Now I’m making some stops at other donating blogs. Thank you for a great idea!
I will be sharing heartwarming stories that bring hope and a sense of togetherness and friendship for those who are lost and/or suffering; we all can be that friend, that someone who can make a difference, if only we look a little deeper, dare to think a little greater…in loving memory of ga
My husband and I each donated $10 to the Red Cross using their text service.
We are praying everyday as a family for the people of Haiti and the rescue efforts there, and we will donat through our church. Thank you for your generosity! God Bless You!
We are in constant prayer for these precious people. Also, we have made a donation to World Vision (www.worldvision.org) to help in their relief efforts in Haiti.
texted Red Cross – every little bit helps.
Thank you so much for doing this! You inspired me to donate via comments as well (although on a smaller scale) god bless!
What you are doing is awesome. We are giving money to Compassion’s relief fund, too. God bless you.
I know I am late, but I wanted to let your readers know, that when I was paying at the register at Walgreens today, I was asked if I wanted to contribute to the American Red Cross efforts for Haiti.
I asked if I could use my Register Rewards (RR), and the cashier said yes! I contributed $10. I could choose between $1, $5, and $10.
It was a great way to use my RRs that are almost expired.
One note though: like other store items, I needed to have the same number of items as RRs. Since I had 3 RRs totalling $10, I needed 3 items, that is, the donation and 2 additional fillers. On the other hand, I could have split the transaction so I wouldn’t need to buy fillers.
Like, if I had a $5 RR, then I could just donate $5 and not need fillers. Does that make sense?
Hope this helps, and sorry if I am repeating if this has been mentioned already!
Hello,
My church is helping! We are praying for those in Haiti! We have so much that we take for granted each day!
Thank you so much for this opportunity!
leaving a comment so you can add to your donation! we are praying and donating financially wherever possible.
Thanks for donating.
I have donated to the UWWDF(United Way Worldwide Disaster Fund) Thanks.
Hi Crystal – I think this is such an amazing thing your family is doing. Thank you!
We are participating in the ‘Eat from the Pantry (and Freezer) Challenge’ and we’ve decided to give two-thirds of what we are saving this month on groceries to Compassion.
Thank you for making this possible!
God bless all of the people in Haiti.
I gave $35 to the International Medical Corps and sent the information to my employer for a donation match. I also sent $10 to Heifer International; they’re not an immediate responder, but they had ongoing projects in the region that deserve support.
Hello,
We have prayer and continue to. We have made a donation through the Red Cross. Also, our church we attend is working on a project, plans and mission for our church to help out and do our part to contribute. We will be hearing shortly about what we can do through our church to help.
Thank you and God Bless,
Jennifer and family
I am a nurse practitioner and I donated to Project Hope which will help fund the medical volunteers aboard the U.S. Naval Ship Comfort which will be a floating hospital for the injured Haitians. It will arrive in Haiti soon.
Thank you for your contribution too!
We donated to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, and I donated all of my Swagbucks.
What a wonderful idea, I have joined in on my blog.
My husband and I gave $100 through Samaritan’s Purse. I plan to give again after next pay day.
I know I’m late but I still wanted to reply. What a neat idea. We donated through our church this morning and donated several boxes of baggies for relief kits. God bless the children and people of Haiti!
Red Cross donation and lots of prayers.
Thank you!
I’m donating on my blog for every new subscriber, comment, and more. Please visit me and help increase my donation!
My husband and I donated $30 to the Haiti Relief Fund through our home church, Woodland Hills, in MN. They will giving some to COFED and some to Providence Ministries.
I just put up a blog post giving people some more ways to help Haiti. I donated via text to YELE and appreciate your generous donations!
Thank you for helping me help this way!
My family (who live in Wichita, KS) went to El Dorado to help assemble the bags of food that Numana distributes!! It was a great experience and I hope to do it again.
My husband and I donated $10 to the Red Cross to help in Haiti.
I donated to Samaritan’s Purse. Thank you for organizing the donation for comments to your blog.
Since my husband and I did not get things together in time to donate to our church’s special collection for Haiti today, we made an online donation to Cross International, an organization we know of that has already been doing work in the company and is now involved in relief efforts. We have also been praying for the people of Haiti — our brothers and sisters.
Thanks for what you are doing.
Thank you for donating!!
I am praying for the families of Haiti and donating through our church. Thank you for your generosity.
Crystal,
It is so awesome to see you respond to God’s direction/burden upon your heart!!!! We will be helping via my husband who was asked by the church to help coordinate the organizing/filling of one, maybe two 10000# containers to be located at local Lowes, Home Depot, etc. This will be in correlation with some other churches in the Northwest Arkansas area.
This is a great cause and i hope my comment will help reach the goal of 164
My husband, son and I just donated $100 to the Heifer Project for their Haiti relief program. They will use the money to help families they have previously been working with get back on their feet.
In our local paper we just learned that a young woman from our city who was working with a literacy project in Haiti was caught in a building collapse and had to have one leg amputated below the knee. Please keep her and all the survivors in your thoughts and prayers.
I am donating my 2 $5. rebated checks from Johnson and Johnson. God bless you all for what you are doing!
i’m commenting on as many blogs as I can.
Thank you so much for doing this! We had just donated through the Red Cross when I saw your post – what a great idea, thank you!
I donated through my work who has a matching gifts program for anything over $25, so my contribution is worth double.
I donated my Discover card cashback reward of $75 directly through Discover card and they matched it. (To American Red Cross). Thanks for all you do!
SwagGrabber posted a deal about a $40 subscription for 40 issues of All You the other day, just wanted to share. Only $1 per issue but then $10 of that $40 goes to Haitian Relief, which makes it even less and helps a good cause.

Thank you for what you’re doing. I’ve donated through Red Cross.
Thank you for doing this. I’ve already donated via YELE, and through Zynga (the facebook apps game company). Also I have volunteered to lead a prayer service for Haiti at my church’s young adult ministry meeting this Tuesday, using the resources at http://education.crs.org/ (Catholic Relief Services). This on top of continuously posting links to help on my facebook.
Thank you again!
Donated to Compassion
i think this is awesome!
My family and I are each still working out the different ways we can donate, but in the meantime, I donated all my swagbucks.
Been praying and praying.
Put Compassion’s Haiti logo on my facebook picture.
Blogged.
Encouraged others to give and pray.
90999 donation
Thank you for your generosity. I really appreciate it. I donated all my swagbucks for the cause!
I donated some Swagbucks…i will also be donating to my company’s relief effort.
This is amazing. It is so beautiful what pepole are doing for this cause. All of my thoughts and prayers go out to those families struggling and in need. I can only imagine what those parents in Haiti are going through right now. Having to fend for themselves AND children. It makes me think how well off I am. You know, we all complain about things, and everyone wishes something different in their lives. But this puts it into perspective. Do we really need that new pair of heels? Or that new purse? I was just saying to my son, see how well off we are? He nodded and said he feels so bad for those people. Then he said, we should tell them to come live with us. That put a big smile on my face. Knowing that a young child cares gives me so much hope for those people in Haiti.
Wow! Your blog is raising A LOT OF MONEY! That is wonderful! I texted to the Red Cross last week and therefore donated $10. I wish more people would simply donate, $1, $5, or $10 here or there because it would make such a difference!
We texted and donated, and are helping my son and his school raise money to send to the Red Cross.
Thank you for what you are doing.
I tweeted about and posted on FB (and became a fan of) http://hope-for-haiti.blogspot.com and will probably link this page. I don’t think that counts for a participation, but I just want to thank you for what you are doing and say what a blessing you are. You must have known what response you would get because of how popular your blog is and I hope you guys can afford to follow through with the commitment (I didn’t notice any maximums). I still need to talk to my husband about what we can do. There are so many charities and ways to get involved, I’m not sure which to choose!
So, thank you again and may God bless you and your family for your loving and generous hearts.
Thank you for donating. I have given to Doctors Without Borders and ASPCA (for the animals!).
What an amazing thing you are doing , thanks !
We gave $100 to UNICEF and $100 to Habitat for Humanity. My husband received a pay raise at the beginning of the year, and we decided to donate the amount of the raise for January to relief efforts for Haiti. They need so much help there, it’s the least we can do.
Thank you for this post and directing us towards serving these people.
We went and helped package the Numana food packets last Saturday and are looking forward to helping again this Saturday!
I texted 90999 to donate $10.00
We have donated through our church as well as to the Red Cross. Thank you for starting this campaign and inspiring so many people to help in anyway they can!
Donated 20 pairs of shoes that will be sent to haiti!
Thank you so much for doing this we have donated to yele.org, red cross and worldwidevillage.com. Also brought medical supplies to our local church that is collecting for loveachild. Passing out fliers at my sons school to get more families to donate medical supplies as well.
I’m a dingbat! I’m #403 up there, but I linked to the wrong post…I don’t know how to fix it. I meant to link to a post where I talked about our family giving to World Vision…I hope this didn’t wreck what I/you was/were trying to do!
Thank you all so much for doing this! We have also decided to pitch in
Have continued to pray for the people of Haiti and donated money to the cause through the Humanitarian Services Emergency Relief. Posted on my blog. Thank you for what you are doing. Also saw on here that some have called their reps to get the orphans here who are already through much of the adoption process. I think that is a fantastic idea!
You are inspiring me to do more! I’ve been praying ever since I learned what happened in Haiti, but wasn’t sure how to contribute.
Now I’m ready to move on an idea had a while back. I’ve been saving all our family’s nut cans for ages. Now I have a huge box of them. I’m going to print up some labels for them saying ” We CAN Help Haiti and CHANGE the outcome!” Then my children and I will give them out to everyone we know,( keeping a list for weekly pick up).
In this economy, lots of people don’t feel they can afford to help much financially, but nearly all of us have coins that weigh down our purses and pockets, that could be doing some good for people in much more difficult circumstances than we are in, here in the U.S. There’s never been a better moment to Love Thy Neighbor!
Jeanne
My husband and I are working to set up a donation fund at our church to gather a large amount to send to our mission agency in Haiti.
My company The Shade Experts has made a monetary donation to The Red Cross. Also in my blog I encouraged my readers and other business to donate. Please read my blog entry at http://www.TheShadeExperts.com/blog/ Thank you for doing this!
Thank you so much for what you are doing! My family has supported a young boy through Compassion International for the last 6 years now and let me tell you how it has touched our lives. Thank you to all those who are giving.
The Wigintons
We donated hand towels for care packages being made by my daughter’s school.
Donated through vbmb.org where 100% of doanations go directly to the field. All overhead expenses come out of their regular operating budget, not donations and gifts.
This is a beautiful thing that you are doing, Crystal. I know that God’s blessings will pour down on you as you lead others to bless others.
Lavaida
I blogged about my donation to Haiti and the personal story I knew about a volunteer there, a young woman whose body was found last week in the rubble
Thanks for doing this!!! I just blogged. Compassion International is very dear to us. We’ve been sponsoring 2 children for years now.
http://KeepinUpWithTheTatums.blogspot.com
Thanks again!
My daughter is in 5th grade and attends a school where they wear uniforms. Today they could donate money to the Haiti earthquake fund and wear regular clothes. My daughter contributed and they raised over $500. We are also donating to our church humanitarian aid fund. They have already sent two plane with food, water, medical supplies, etc. and doctors to help. Thanks for all you do.
It’s time to unite and help others. I will contribute.
my husband and i are giving financially to help haiti & we’ve been praying too… which is just as important!
Just got my blog post up! Very very generous what you all are doing
http://www.budgetsaresexy.com/2010/01/haiti-relief-efforts-how-you-can-help.html
This really warms my heart and brings a smile to my face. In the face of such destruction and suffering, knowing so many people are working together to help is just amazing! This made my night.
I donated by texting HAITI to 90999
To help spread the word and increase donations, we will donate $1 for each new twitter follower at twitter.com/GuptaGastro So far we have donated over $10,000 With this project, we are hoping to donate $10,000 more. We have raised an additional $156 in the past 24 hours. Please help speed things up. Haiti has received a lot of money, but it is no where near enough. thousands of people are dying from a lack of medical attention and medical supplies. Some tent hospitals dont even have anitbacterial or soap and water. As a physicians office in Brooklyn, New York, we have many Haitian patients who have friends and family dying in Haiti, waiting for medical attention. This issue is still very urgent. http://www.guptagastro.com for more info or twitter.com/GuptaGastro.
Looks like I’m a day late on this but I posted how I helped on my blog here: http://www.holecardsarewild.com/2010/01/help-for-haiti.html.
I think it’s great how you are helping encourage people and spread the word.
lo on cash, but i am scouring my house for all items needed the most urgently in haiti, nd donating to our local haitian support foundation. also im putting ideas on how to help up on my facebook page, along with links. my facebook friends have been able to help more easily this way, so i feel good i helped to help. thanks for making a donation simply because im telling you about this!!
my candle is lit for the LIGHT
Just posted. I’m donating $1 for every new subscriber and 50 cents for every comment on my post!
Glad to hear about all of the good you are doing. As a Nurse my first thought was what can I do? I donated to the Red Cross in the first 24 hours after the quake. I will now be going to Haiti as part of a Neonatal/Pediatric medical team for 10 days. The thing to remeber is Haiti needed our help BEFORE the earthquake. They will need our help for years to come. I hope people don’t loose interest before the work is done. Please keep the people of Haiti in your prayers.
