Kate, from Stolen Moments Cooking, recently offered to let me try out her personalized menu planning service. I was a little bit leery of how it would work for someone like me. I rarely follow recipes or directions and so following a menu plan that someone else made up for me? I really didn't think it would work. But I was pleasantly surprised at how helpful this service was–even for an out-of-the-box, non-systematical person like me!
Here are a few things I liked about Stolen Moments Menu Planning:
First off, Kate doesn't just send you a generic menu for the month. Oh no! You fill out a survey and then she custom creates a menu tailored to your family's likes and dislikes–and it's all factored in with your grocery budget, too. I was impressed with her ability to take the survey I filled out and put together a great menu within our weekly grocery budget which also considered our family's food preferences. It sort of felt like I was royalty or something to have someone else planning customized menus for our family!
Secondly, while I didn't follow the menu exactly (you know that would pretty much be impossible for me to do, don't you?), having a full month's worth of menus all mapped out for me gave me a great springboard of ideas and inspiration to work from. As a busy mom of three little ones, it definitely saved me time and mental energy to have a list already made out to work from.
Thirdly, Kate had a lot of unique ideas woven throughout the menu to help you speed up your efficiency in the kitchen. For instance, she suggested I bake extras of certain items and stick them in the freezer for a later date. One of my favorite ideas was her recipe for Homemade Uncrustables (just make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, cut out with a biscuit cutter, crimp the edges together with a fork, and freeze). It's such a simple thing, but something I'd never thought to do before. What a fun and economical way to have lunch-on-the-go all made up and at-the-ready in the freezer!
I believe strongly that one of the easiest ways to save money on your grocery bill is to have a menu plan and to follow the plan. It will eliminate dozens of unnecessary purchases and store-runs throughout the month which will invariably save you dozens–if not hundreds!–of dollars.
If you want to plan menus but feel hurried and harried as it is and would rather pay a little bit to have someone do the work for you, I'd definitely recommend that you check out Stolen Moments Menu Planning. Be aware that the “as low as” means you only get the $5 a month if you prepay for the whole year. I am used to this kind of fine print from businesses but was surprised to find it on MSM. Usually she spells it all out up front. It’s only 5.95 a month if you pay as you go, though, so not a big difference, it just bugged me for some reason.

I am already in my first month of SMMP and like you said even for those who consider themselves semi knowledgeable in this area would greatly benefit. I was afraid it would limit my creativity (although w/two and one on the way I am at the point where to save time I am going to need to give up a little) and not fit into my budget. Anyway… She incorporated in produce from my garden, meat from my freezer and saved me so much time and money that I was able to drop on of her meals and make my husband and I Chile Relanoes one night for a date! That sounds incredible, I love planning a menu but I can never think of enough stuff for a months worth of food, then i veer off and end up spending my grocery bill on spices alone, gah.
What a tremendous blessing! I would have loved something like this on this past year’s journey. We have been stretched this year first with my father in law’s stroke, pancreatic cancer, hospice and passing. In his final month, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and started complications week of fil’s funeral. Just when we thought we were on upswing, my daughter tore her acl and had to have allograft/repair, and 6 months of physical therapy. despite all of this we have much to be thankful for and know God has a bigger plan for us in all of this.
I’ve never heard of such a service. I wouldn’t mind trying it though!

I found Kate’s site a few months ago, and love it. Everything I’ve made has turned out well, and we have new family favorites. In fact, I just made her BLT pasta salad for lunch– it was so easy, but I wouldn’t have thought it up on my own. I’m going to let my 3- yr old help me make her homemade cheese crackers tomorrow– they look delicious!
I’m horrible at actually planning meals more than a day or so ahead. This actually looks like it would take into account several things like budget, family size (here it’s 6-7) , etc. And it’s relatively normal food.

I’m REALLY wishing I had done some menu planning right now, as I am finishing up day 3 of being glued to the couch with the flu. If I had had some meals planned or frozen, my poor husband wouldn’t be having to run to the grocery store and making dinner every night, so something like this would be SO nice for me!

I could so use this right now…I keep saying that I’m going to plan out our menu’s – even if just for a week – I can never seem to get organized (or inspired) and it never fails that 4 pm rolls around and I’m doing the “what’s for dinner” fridge/freezer/pantry round robin – hoping something will magically appear in one of the three locations. Or I have an inspired idea of something to cook, but have no time to thaw the meat and don’t have all the ingredients I need… sigh.
