How I got 7500 sheets of paper for $1.50 after rebates from OfficeMax.com

by crystal on October 19, 2009

20157465i_01
I was really excited about the Office Max deals this week because we're running low on paper. And who can beat free paper? But I didn't really have time in the schedule to take all three little ones to Office Max in the next few days.

So I figured out a way to order online and actually pay less than I would pay in-store. It's a tad complicated, but hang with me while I explain how to get
these items free, with free shipping, and get a little money back, too:

::Sign up for a MaxPerks card here (unless you already have a card). Write down your MaxPerks card number.

::Go to RetailMeNot, search for OfficeMax, and click through the free
shipping code listed at the top of the page. This will automatically
update your account to include free shipping on any order of $50 or
more.

::Sign up for an account with ShopAtHome (gives 4% back on
Office Max purchases plus a $5 bonus for new sign-ups, but you must
earn $20 in rebates before you receive a payment) or Ebates (gives 3%
back on Office Max purchases plus a $5 bonus for new sign-ups. You only
have to place one order and your check will be issued at the end of the
quarter.)

::Search for OfficeMax through ShopAtHome or Ebates and click through to the website.

::Buy any combination of the following free after MaxPerks items which equal $50 (so you can qualify for the free shipping): 5-Ream Case of Copy Paper (2500 sheets)–$16.99 (Limit 3); Manila Folders (100-count)–$6.99 (Limit 3); or Bankers Boxes (10-pack)–$9.99 (Limit 3) (I purchased 3 5-Ream Cases of copy paper and my total was just over $50.)

::Checkout and make sure to input your MaxPerks Rewards card number.

::Your MaxPerks Bonus Rewards card should arrive in the mail within
a few weeks and should automatically be loaded with your Bonus Rewards.

::Plus, your ShopAtHome account or your EBates account will be credited with your rebate. So you'll end up only paying a few dollars or less out of pocket. (And if you are a new sign-up with ShopAtHome or Ebates, you'll get the $5 sign-up bonus which could actually turn this into a money-maker after the MaxPerks Reward and cashback rebate!)

::This deal is good through October 24, 2009.

A big thanks to my brother, Nathaniel, for suggesting I try getting this online! I have 7500 sheets of paper coming and I will only have paid around $1.50 total (due to tax) for it after my MaxPerks reward (which I'm planning to use to buy printer cartridges–something I already needed!) and cashback rebate. How's that for a deal?

Not much time left to vote and the other blog is getting very aggressive with voting. This blog actually deserves it. Vote vote vote!!!

Money Saving Mom – You have so many awesome fans on facebook, just send a note out to them asking for votes and you’ll have this in the bag!

Gina October 19, 2009 at 9:23 pm

I’m confused…why are you paying $1.50? Wouldn’t it be free if you’re getting back $17×3 in max rewards? Thanks!

**********************
Money Saving Mom here: No, because I had to pay tax and that was around $3.xx. So it ended up being about $1.50 after the rebate.

Courtney October 19, 2009 at 9:33 pm

Wow, thanks so much for this, Crystal! I just signed up for ShopAtHome so this is a money-maker for me – awesome!

Megan Presley October 19, 2009 at 9:49 pm

Does the rebate from the maxperks get loaded on the card? Like, say, a giftcard? Or is it a true rebate – like a check? I’m already signed up with ShopAtHome, but I was confused as to where the Office Max rebate goes. I’d love to get some free items, but with that much paper, I’d have no need to go back there for a long time! I was just wondering if the rebate would limit me to using the money back at Office Max (on a future purchase). Thanks!

Stefanie October 19, 2009 at 9:51 pm

How do the Max points work? You have to accumulate $500 on it, then you get a $25 giftcard? Did I read that right on the website?

Madeline October 19, 2009 at 9:56 pm

Am I reading it right – I have to spend $500 at Office Max in order to get a $25 rebate? Is that different from how the MaxPerks work? Or are Maxperks more like getting ECBs?

The explanation on their website stinks!

********************
Money Saving Mom here: From what I understand, this particular promotion is very similar to CVS ECBs, only they are on your MaxPerks card.

Jenni October 19, 2009 at 10:09 pm

I’m confused…the deal sounds great, but with the Teachers Max Perks card it says you have to earn $75 in rewards “points” and then they’ll issue you a card with $10 on it. So I don’t know if its different from the business card or if I’m reading it wrong, but it sounds like I wouldn’t be getting that almost $51 back but instead would have to earn about $25 more “points” before they gave me $10.
Please help, Money Saving Mom!

*****************
Money Saving Mom here: This is a special bonus reward offer they are offering right now. Don’t even worry about the reward points. This bonus offer is just like ECBs at CVS, only you get it back on your MaxPerks card.

Dee October 19, 2009 at 10:10 pm

Yay! Thanks! I’ve been burning through paper and ink thanks to grad school and homeschooling my preschooler…much appreciated!

alison October 19, 2009 at 10:48 pm

Thanks, I just ordered mine. I was waiting for a good time to sign up for Ebates. So this is a moneymaker for me.
You’re Great!!

Cori October 19, 2009 at 11:08 pm

Wow, I was looking at the price for toner for my printer, and it’s shockingly expensive! I’ve refilled the cartridge once, so I don’t think I can a second time. I feel very happy to have found this deal, at least the 85 dollars for the toner will actually have gone to buy me the toner, two reams of paper, a pack of banker’s boxes, and some folders. My teacher husband will have no excuse not to be organized. ;-) Thanks for posting this!

Kelleigh October 19, 2009 at 11:16 pm

Wahoo!! Just did it for my hubby’s business and I’m getting FREE paper (no sales tax in Oregon), plus I’ll be getting 4.5% back through the Melaleuca Marketplace!! And I didn’t even have to leave the house!! Thank you SO much for posting this!

Amanda October 19, 2009 at 11:27 pm

Are the Max Perks Cards only for teachers and business people? I am not seeing the sign up link for everyone else… Maybe I am not looking enough…? LOVE your blog!! Thanks so much for all the work you do!!

lee October 19, 2009 at 11:28 pm

I’m confused, do you have to be a teacher or student? I’m neither nor am I buying this for business.

Gina S. October 19, 2009 at 11:31 pm

If you spend $500 in one year you get $25 back. These rebates have nothing to do with that except it starts to add up your to $500. You get the rewards every 4 months…. it’s quarterly. You get one-two months to spend them. You print your reward off from an email they send you and you bring the piece of paper with you to O.M. and it’s like cash but can only use at O.M.
Hope that makes since. I’ve been shopping hteir for years. I received $18 in rewards last quarter from recycling my ink. $3 per ink cartridge.

Grateful Guest October 19, 2009 at 11:40 pm

Thanks so much for your time and this info, but I’m still confused.

As I understand the promotional at least in the newspaper, you buy any of the featured items–

the Sharpies (1.99–limit 3)
the paper–5 ream case (16.99–limit 3)
the banker boxes–12 pack (9.99–limit 3)
the file folders–100 count (6.99–limit 3)

and get back on your Max perk card those amounts on your Max Perk card to be used for later.

So as I understood your post, it seemed that you did not pay out of pocket up front for your three reams of paper because you used ebates. Did I get this right? Or did you have to pay up front your 16.99 x 3 + tax? I think this is why others are confused. I get the free mailing, I get the rebate from ebate, but I don’t get how you only ended up paying the tax out of pocket. Were you just counting the credit coming on you Max Perk card as “not paying” anything? I’d love to do this and so appreciate your time, but I thought ebate was a magic “genie” giving you your rebate early or something instead of it showing up on your maxperk card. If you have a sec can you clarify?

Thanks for all you do

*********************
Money Saving Mom here: I tried to be as clear as I could in the post, but I’m sorry if it didn’t make sense. I bought the items, paid out of pocket $53.xx, and will get back $51 on my MaxPerks card, plus 4% into my ShopAtHome.com account. So all totaled, I’ll have spent approx. $1.50 after the MaxPerks rebate and the ShopAtHome rebate.

I need to buy cartridges for my printer anyway, so I’m going to use my MaxPerks rewards earned for this.

Rae October 19, 2009 at 11:49 pm

I’m confused…will you get back $51 ($17×3) in max rewards? Thank you!

Grateful Guest October 20, 2009 at 12:45 am

Grateful Guest Here: Thanks so much for clarifying. I have an Office Max 10 off 30 purchase coupon, so I think I’ll be better going to the store. Your other readers may want to search their files for this coupon. In addition, I recently received a Office Max 10 off 30 ink cartridge coupon, but I don’t know if it was just for refills or for ink cartridges. This might help you later when you get your credit on your OfficeMax Card and go to get your ink cartridges. Good luck and thanks for helping all of us.

Tammy October 20, 2009 at 1:06 am

Made perfect sense to me. I just did it, according to the steps you outlined and it worked just fine. I’m excited too, because I will be needing toner soon and this is a great way to spend once and get twice as much! Blessings!

Shannon Carter October 20, 2009 at 1:09 am

Thank you! This worked great for me. I believe all orders of $50 or more receive free shipping even without the retailmenot code. I clicked on OfficeMax before searching for the code and it already said “$50 until free shipping” without logging in or anything. I got three boxes of paper, three boxes of manila folders, and a box of banker boxes for free plus the ebates rebate (no tax in Oregon), and might qualify for $10 on the Maxperks card since I spent over $75.

jac October 20, 2009 at 6:58 am

Thanks for trying on this, and let me know how the $51 from Office Max goes. It looks like O M only sends you the money when (business perks) you have spent $500, then you get a $25 card.
So, when you buy $51, that’s $51 towards the $500 to get the $25 GC. Nothing in the fine print says anything about redeeming them before you reach $500.

Tasha October 20, 2009 at 7:07 am

When you say you will get back $51 on you Office Max card….will that be in the form of a check like a rebate check? How does the money on your Max card work? As a credit????Toward what???

Thanks.
Tasha

Dee Wolters October 20, 2009 at 7:10 am

Thanks for great post. I have been putting off buying paper, but we are down to the few sheets in the printer. In our paper on Sunday, there was a 20% off entire purchase flier, so I am going to head to store to use this in addition to the great deals you mentioned. I also had accumulated $28 from turning in used Hp ink cartridges, so that will be a good deal for me. As a home school teacher ( 4 teen agers) I have a max perks teacher card, have had it for over 5 years and never had a problem using it. When I go with hubby and he buys supplies for his office I scan my card so I get credit.

MH October 20, 2009 at 7:26 am

I clicked onto OfficeMax through Shopathome and placed my order, but when I checked back onto Shopathome there wasn’t a record of my purchase. I don’t think I received anything for routing through them. :( I messed up somehow. Still got the great deal through OfficeMax though. I didn’t actually see any evidence that the rewards are on my Max Perks card, but I did see my number on the order, so I’m assuming it worked. My fingers are crossed! Thanks for the tips.

********************
Money Saving Mom here: Your order won’t show up on either account for a few days. Hang tight, you should get credited. :)

Michelle October 20, 2009 at 7:42 am

Thanks!!! Worked great and I plan on using my rewards for a camera!

Frugal.Homemaker.Plus October 20, 2009 at 8:06 am

Done- I hope it works! :) We go through a remarkable amount of paper here between my blog business and my classes. (I’m a teacher and a business owner!)

Deborah October 20, 2009 at 8:12 am

Are you counting your MaxPerks twice? you pay $53 out of pocket, but it’s $1.50 after the MaxPerks…which you’re also going to use for toner cartridges? It’s the same problem I have with bloggers who post about counting ECB they earn instead of the ones you use. Their good in the future – but I have less cash now. (Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE ECB and RR, but you can’t count them both when you earn them AND when you redeem them!).

**********************
Money Saving Mom here: Nope, not counting ‘em twice. I’m going to use the MaxPerks gift card to buy ink I already needed to buy so it’s like I got the paper as a free bonus for buying the ink. Make sense? So basically I paid $1.50 to get all that paper.

Frugally Farming Family October 20, 2009 at 8:13 am

Thanks so much! I wanted to take advantage of the deals this week too, but did not want to take all 6 of my little ones! This deal is great!

Akaya October 20, 2009 at 8:26 am

Thank you for posting this deal! When I first heard about it a couple days ago I was sad because the nearest Office max is 3 hours away from me! This deal is AWESOME!!!

Frugally Farming Family October 20, 2009 at 8:56 am

Bummer! I just tried to get the paper and it says it has been discontinued! Any idea if they will substitute an item?

Toni October 20, 2009 at 8:57 am

OfficeMax just “DISCONTINUED” the 2,500 sheet paper sale for $16.99 – right when I was in the middle of ordering! There went any business I might have given them… The worst part is that they’re still showing the advertised deal when you go to their site, but it’s only when you try to order that it says it’s “DISCONTINUED”. GRRR…

Frugally Farming Family October 20, 2009 at 9:02 am

Sorry for so many comments. I decided to call about the paper being discontinued. The lady with whom I spoke said “discontinued” just means “out of stock” and I should be able to purchase it later in the week. I thought I would let all the other readers know in case they are experiencing the same situation! Thanks for posting this deal!

MorganR October 20, 2009 at 9:05 am

I think I may do this deal. I have $70 in Max Perks Rewards from the last quarter. Can I use this to pay for paper and the other reward items? I also have a coupon for $10/20 and one for $10/50. So my question is can I use one of my $10 coupons and then use my $70 Max Perks money to do this deal?

**REMINDER: If you live in Florida you have ONE YEAR to use your Max Perks Reward money, not a couple of months like all the other states. (not sure why they do that, but it is a bonus for us Floridians)

Lisa October 20, 2009 at 9:15 am

Can you use your MaxPerks rebates online? We dont have an OfficeMax nearby but I really want to do this deal.

Christy October 20, 2009 at 9:35 am

I was able to order 3 boxes of paper just fine and it didn’t say anything about being “discontinued”, so I would say try again! My order went thru just fine and I followed all of Crystal’s instructions to a “T” and it went great. Thanks again! We go thru paper SO fast w/printing coupons, etc, so this is a steal!!! I will probably use my rebate $$ to purchase more paper in the future. :) Can never have enough!!!

dunnk October 20, 2009 at 9:40 am

Can you use your MaxPerks money to buy MaxPerks items again?

Like can I buy the paper, wait to get the MaxPerks then buy the bankers boxes with that MaxPerk money to get more MaxPerk money? Can you roll MaxPerk into more MaxPerks?

Thanks,

Kristina October 20, 2009 at 9:54 am

I just wanted to let you know that Office Max always offers free shipping if you’re in their delivery area, for orders over $50.

Michelle October 20, 2009 at 10:37 am

OK – I jumped in and after the loaded card comes in the mail for $51 and ebates – I should only have spent 1.87 out of pocket. Come on perks reward card :o ) I hope to buy some hanging files with this because they do not carry my ink cartridge :o ( But its all good because I was going to buy hanging files anyway – now I get free paper for buying hanging folder! From what I read in the fine print, you have to use your bonus money within 90 days – don’t let that expire! Thanks moneysavingmom – you the best!

Connie October 20, 2009 at 11:01 am

Bummer, I just tried to order the paper but it has been discontinued :(

Becca October 20, 2009 at 11:30 am

I’ve been using Max Perks for about a year too. I had $15 (from 5 ink cartridges turned in) on my Max perks card that expired a year from when they were issued. I also had another $3 from another ink cartridge I dropped off. You print these off on your computer when you go shopping in the store or submit the number on the card (it’s a long gift card number with a PIN). It’s like what moneysavingmom said…it’s like using ECB’s at CVS. This deal with the paper allowed me to use only one of my max reward cards so I used the $15 one and this lessened my Out of Pocket to $39.54, instead of the aprox. $53. I consider that a moneymaker of aprox. $11. Then I will reuse the $51 for the next awesome deal and keep rolling over, if I can. Otherwise I’ll just use the $51 for ANYTHING in the store within a year. Max Perks are great and so is moneysavingmom. Thanks for the deal, that I would have never noticed.

A Guest October 20, 2009 at 12:27 pm

Okay, if you actually get that full amount back (say $50) on three cases of paper, why does their site say you have to earn $75 through MaxPerks in order to get a $10 gift card? You’re saying that you’ll be getting $50 back to spend again; essentially spending that $50 for $100 worth of product. I just wanted to clarify, I’ve never done this before and their site seems to indicate that you are only earning “fake” money that will get you a gift card once you reach a certain point. Please clarify if that’s the case. Thank you.

jen October 20, 2009 at 12:38 pm

I believe “home office” qualifies for MaxPerks.

jen October 20, 2009 at 12:43 pm

Also, I have been a MaxPerks girl for a while. You might not see the bonus show up until the end of the month or the end of the quarter. That has been my experience in the past. But I have always gotten my rewards. They just changed the online version of MaxPerks on Sun so I don’t know if that means we will get bonus rewards sooner or not. Don’t forget! For every ink cartridge you turn in at the counter at the store you get $3 with MaxPerks. I save up those “recycling rewards” cards and go in to “buy” free ink all the time! Gotta love it.

Dee Wolters October 20, 2009 at 1:01 pm

I went to the brick and mortor Office Max because we needed the paper today, plus I had several other errands. The price on the shelf for the paper and boxes was higher than on the web site. I had brought my “cart” receipt from the internet order, so I could prove the prices. Actually, I brought is so I could remember what to buy. Anyway, with that paper, i was able to get those prices in the store. Plus, there was a 20% off entire order coupon in our paper, so I used that. I also had $28 max perks $$ from all the back to school purchases and ink cart. I had turned in, so used that too. Out of pocket- $50+/-, for 3 boxes of paper, 2 packages bankers boxes, 1 2 pack of hp ink cartridges. Should get $65+ on the max perk card from the rebates. Will need more ink cartridges by then, so hope they will have a sale. BTW- the ink cartridges were $2 less in the store than on line. Good luck to all and thanks for posting such a great deal.

Akaya October 20, 2009 at 1:56 pm

Okay…I have two questions :)

I just signed up for shop at home to do this deal. How long does it take for my Shopathome rebate to show up in my account there?

I anticipate my Office Max Rewards points to take a while (will this be applied to my acct #, OR will they send me a gift card???)

Michelle B. October 20, 2009 at 3:04 pm

I did it. Now I just have to see everything come through. Thank you!

Danielle October 20, 2009 at 3:53 pm

Thanks for all the money saving suggestions you gave! If you need printer ink cartridges you should go to http://www.Clickinks.com, there is free shipping plus you can get 10% off with Coupon Code FOUNDCLICKINKS! And if you buy the remanufactured cartridges they are always cheaper than at Office Max!

Renee October 20, 2009 at 7:53 pm

Just wanted to let everyone know that Office Max accepts competitors’ coupons, too.

Angela October 20, 2009 at 8:13 pm

Thank you thank you! Like you, I’m in need of ink cartridges – love that I get free paper with them!

Cherie October 20, 2009 at 9:26 pm

Just did this deal at 10:30 tonight. Before I could put the paper in my shopping cart, it asked me for my zip code to make sure the paper was available in my area. It was. So, if you live in FL, the printer paper may still be available for you.

As always, thank you Money Saving Mom for the great tip!

Rachlea October 20, 2009 at 11:19 pm

Well the deal is gone now pooh

Heather October 21, 2009 at 12:28 pm

So, if I’m not a teacher and I don’t have a business, can I still get this reward? I don’t already have a MaxPerks card.

Christy October 21, 2009 at 1:56 pm

I ordered my 3 boxes of paper yesterday and promptly received them today! Can’t beat that for service & free shipping. What a wonderful delivery man too … put them right inside my front door. :) Will be shopping there more often for my office needs! Now I can’t wait to receive those perks … will be watching the mail for my card. Does anyone have an idea as to how long it actually takes to receive that card?

Christy October 21, 2009 at 3:38 pm

The paper is still available when I go to their website and add it in my cart, so maybe those experiencing problems should give it another try.

Kendra at New Life On A Homestead October 21, 2009 at 8:16 pm

Bummer!! They are saying the paper deal is discontinued!! I’m so sad.

Steven Francis October 21, 2009 at 11:47 pm

Thanks its a great offer. I will immediately go for it. They really provide good quality i know but the price tag is really attractive.

Monica October 22, 2009 at 12:30 am

I couldn’t find the average Joe sign-up for the MaxPerks, so we did the business one, since we also have that. Do we not get the $51 added to ours since it’s a business one? Anyone know?
I hope it does! We’re really excited to get the paper!
Thank you for all your comments, those helped too.

Dianne October 22, 2009 at 1:54 pm

I ordered 3 reams of paper yesterday (10/21) around 1 PM and my paper was delivered today!

I also called Office Max’s number on their website and spoke with a real person. She said that if you just a person (not a teacher and not a business), you should use the Business Rewards program.

Thanks for the great savings!!

Theresa October 22, 2009 at 5:31 pm

Worked up here in Anchorage, AK. Ordered the paper yesterday and it was just delivered. Plus there is no sales tax in Anchorage! Will use the maxperks rewards for ink as well. I’ll share the paper with friends because there is no way we’ll use that much paper before we move again!

Cindy October 23, 2009 at 1:34 pm

After receiving the order confirmation, it said the item was discontinued(2500 sheets printing paper) not available to delivery. Is anyone have the same situation like me? should I call CS task them to have something for replacement?

Jason Beck October 24, 2009 at 9:01 am

Unless OfficeMax has recently changed their Max Perks rebates policy, any items that are purchased with Max Perks rebates will not earn more Max Perks rebates. The items have to be purchased with cash or credit. This has been my finding for the last year or so.

Christy October 24, 2009 at 11:58 am

For those that asked: “Bonus Rewards for these offers, along with any other Bonus Rewards a Member may have earned during the same period, will be issued in the form of a reward card redeemable toward future purchases. Reward card expires 90 days from date of issuance except for reward cards for FL Members, which expire 1 year from date of issuance.”

leann October 29, 2009 at 10:53 am

Has anyone gotten their rewards yet? I actually figured this deal out the day before the post for it here so I really thought I’d have gotten the rewards by now. Curious if any of you have? Thanks!
