Autozone
Did you know that you could borrow tools from your local AutoZone store–for free? I certainly didn't know that, so I was excited when Tiffany told me about it. Check out her post with all the details here.

Thanks for sharing that! I’m telling everyone I know!

If your engine light is on they will also hook your car up to their computer and tell you what codes it is reading. My husband loves this as it seriously narrows down what the problem may be with the car. It also only takes a few minutes and is also free.

O’Reilly Auto Parts does this as well. :D

sometimes there is a small deposit… but you get it back when you bring the tool back though.

They also check and charge your battery for free. I used it when it got to -14 here and cops threatened to tow my car. Careful though because they told me I needed a new battery, but it has been going strong for almost 2 years. Though that is probably not indicative of the whole chain.

We (by that I mean the hubs) have done this several times. Changing brake pads, serpentine belt, etc. I can’t even imagine how much money we have saved by working on the cars ourselves.

The Auto-Zone loan-a-tool program is great.
You will have to put up some money while you are using the tool, but you will get a refund when you return it.

They also have a rewards card program which pays you $20 if you spend over $20 fives times within 6 months. (which isn’t hard to do if you actually maintain your car)

Yes I have known this for a very long time. But with being frugle and a guy I usually do all my own work on my cars. They also will run diagnostics on your computer, battery tests, and alternator tests for free. Sometimes you can even get them to do more than that for free.

O’Rielly’s is closer to my house than Autozone and they do the same thing, they will also price match items if you find anywhere that has the same item for less.

advance auto also does this. they require a deposit.

Checker offers this service as well, my husband gave them a deposit and got it back when he returned the tool he borrowed. He replaced his car’s shocks himself, saved a lot of money!!

My hubby has been using this service for several years. Also, he recently discovered O-Rielly does it as well–only he likes their program even better. ;-)

The only issue I’ve had with this is that sometimes the deposit isn’t cheap. I “borrowed” a tool that had an $90 deposit. I didn’t have that much cash on me, as I never carry cash, and put it on my debit card. They withdrew the money immediately, but it took over a week to credit it back to my account once I returned the tool. Just wanted to mention this so that people can keep that in mind.

I heard they don’t do that any more. Maybe it’s just in California. They also lend you the diagnostic thing, or so i’m told. Whenever i’ve gone, the guys do it for me. ::shrugs::
