Don't you just love free–especially
when it's on essential things like chocolate and toilet paper?! Here's how you can get both of these items for free at Walgreens this week:
The Walgreen's Big Roll 1000 Toilet Paper is reportedly ringing up
at $0.50 each. This is an unadvertised deal so you might have your
cashier price check it just to be sure. If it is ringing up at $0.50 each, you
can buy 2 and use the $1/2 in-ad coupon to get these for free.
In addition, the Hershey's Extra Large Symphony Creamy Milk
Chocolate Bars (4.5 oz.) are clearanced at a number of stores for only $0.50
plus you'll get $1 Register Rewards when you purchase two making them free
after the Register Rewards!
If you try either of these deals, let us know if they work for you.
Thanks, Money Saving Madness!

I tried to have the cashier scan the tp for me, but she INSISTED that it was the 89 cents. She acted like it was a huge inconvinence for her so I left not finding any of these deals listed here. So I went to Target (LOOOOVE Target!, I also work there) to get school supplies that are marked down to 75% off today! Also got 7 more of those Glade candle tins that were still on Price Cut for $1.66 with the coupons in them, so they were 0.16 using the coupons. So still not a bad day after all
Are the in-ad coupons in the weekly ad or the monthly rebate ad. . .
My Walgreens in ad coupon says 2/$1 not $1 off 2. Is this different than your ad?
I’m still confused after reading the Walgreens 101. If something costs $3 and I have a $1 off coupon, and receive $2 in RR after using the coupon, aren’t I still having to spend $2.00? I mean, it’s not really saving money if I have to spend the $2.00 is it?
I haven’t done much shopping at Walgreens so I’m trying to figure all this out. I just don’t understand how I can get an item for “free” after RR if I have to spend the money just to get the $2 in RR…does my question make sense? LOL.
The Toliet paper did not work for me in NY. They ARE scaning fo .50 each but when they put the coupon in, it beeps.. The cashier said they are priced that way without the coupon and that the coupon is already in… I have never heard that before at Walgreen .
The TP is ringing up with SALE next to it, at 50 cents each, and the coupon beeps so most cashiers will not use the coupon to give it to you for free. (Trust me on that one…LOL…they won’t give you anything for free!) I had Atilla the Hun check me out today (sorry, not nice, I know but the lady had a really bad attitude about my coupons, and I only had 3 today! Thank God it wasn’t a 20 coupon transaction for me, because I think her eyes would have glowed red) and the coupon for the TP beeped – so I really doubt anyone will have any luck with getting them for free, but good luck trying.
I DID get 2 of the Luxe Ghiradelli bars for 30 cents total. They were marked $1.30 each on the shelf and I had the $1/2 coupon from the monthly coupon booklet, so that would have been $2.60 for 2 which was great, but they scanned at 65 cents! Woo hoo! When she scanned my coupon for it, though, it beeped and she just set the coupon aside and didn’t use it! (that’s why I decided she wasn’t a nice person) so when I called it to her attention after she cashed me out, she tried to tell me it was because they were under $1…yada yada yada. Anyway, the mgr came over and re-did just the candybars so I got 2 for 30 cents. Go me…
I had the same thing happen as Meredith. They did scan .50 each but the coupon beeped and the cashier said that the coupon was programmed in already. She didn’t know why. She thought it was odd, too. She said the same thing was happening with the Kleenex and the Progresso soup. So no free TP.
How odd…I do want to try and find the candy bars though, man would that be a chocolate fix..LOL
My ad says 2/$1, not $1/2. Is it different where you live???? I bought 4 tps and they all rang up as .50/ea. When I had him scan the coupon, it beeped and he said that the price is the coupon price.
Sarah, in your scenario you spend $2 out of pocket and you receive $2 worth of Register Rewards to spend as cash in the store. It is the same as if they had handed your $2 right back to you so your item really did cost you nothing. Of course, you have to spend the RR at Walgreens but if you just think of it simply as “cash back” it makes sense. Hope that helps.
Sarah, you will have to spend some money initially out of pocket. The idea then is that you will have RR to roll into other transactions. For example, today I went to WG and bought 2 Neosporin and 2 Triaminic. I had a previous RR for $5 that I used so I ended up spending $4.78 out of pocket (OOP). I received $13 in RR to spend the next time I go to Walgreens. I will use those RR to roll into another deal either later this week or next week (I currently have ~$20 in RR to spend from previous transactions).
My cashier would not let me use the coupon and they had taken all the fliers out of the whole store
Over the last few weeks, I have noticed there are other items that show an in-ad coupon but ring up automatically at the coupon price. Annoying for both the cashier and those of us that clip those in-ad coupons, especially because not ALL of the in-ad coupon items automatically ring up at the coupon price.
the toilet paper scanned in at regular price for me (I think .89) and was marked down to .50 cents when using the in ad coupon (2 for $1.00). The Symphony bars were only on clearance for $1.09 a piece- but still a good price after the $1.00 register reward.
Here’s a little tip I’ve learned…the cashiers usually won’t do anything out of the ordinary, so you have to ask for a manager. Managers usually give the customer what they want. Two of the WG stores where I live are constantly forgetting to take down old sale advertisements. If you see an old sale adverstised on the shelf for something you want, get it and insist on the sale price when they ring it up. The cashier ALWAYS has the manager make the choice to do it, but the manager ALWAYS gives me the sale price…even on sales that ended 2 or 3 weeks prior. TIP: Skip the cashier and go straight to the manager!
I also got the Ghiradelli bars on a great sale. They were 65 cents each and I bought two using the $1/2 coupon from September’s coupon book (two for 30 cents). Then a 75 cent coupon printed off for my next Ghiradelli purchase! So I grabbed 3 more bars and used the 75 cent coupon and another $1/2 coupon, and paid 20 cents for three more candy bars. I am set on chocolate bars for a while!
Sarah, you make a good point. Unless you actively roll them into other RR deals you do spent that $2–you may get something for that $2 but you have to spend it. I get frustrated when I end up with lots of RR which expire in only 2 weeks and if I can’t find RR deals I try to buy other essentials–but I’m still spending that initial amount out of pocket. The other thing I’ve seen posted is a mail in rebate–when you buy an item you get a coupon for a “free” item. That doesn’t make the first one free, it means you get two for the price on one, but you’re still paying for one.
i did the Symphony bars deal today at my local WG. they were clearanced $0.50 so i bought 2; paid $1 got a $1 RR.
woot! i got 2 symphony, 2 kit kat, 2 hersheys and like 8 of the ghiradelli chocolate, 3 toys (3 for $13.98), 2 packs of cigs(for the hubby), 2 of the triaminic strips and 2 liquid and paid about $12 (OOP) for everything. Pretty good for what would have cost about $70. Think i might got get more of the triaminic before the sale ends and stock up and get some diapers too that they have on sale.
I was able to get the free toilet paper and free chocholate in Ohio area
Thanks for the heads up!
the tolit paper rings up at 50C at my walgreens and you can not use the coupon to get them free.
For the toilet paper, my in-ad coupon states 2/$1 ($0.50 each) not $1 off 2.
no go in CT on the free TP…seems like wags fixed the issue so that the q beeps.
Same thing here in TX with the TP..sale price is already in the register so the in ad coupon does not work for this deal. I did find Cottonelle 4 pack double rolls on clearance for $2.19 I had some $1 off coupons that made the $1.19..not free but cheap!
I’m pretty sure the reason the coupon isn’t scanning is because it’s a 2/$1, not a $1/2, which is two for a dollar, not a dollar off two.
toilet paper ringing up at .50 each already and coupon will not scan here as well – Missouri
Here in Columbus Ohio the TP was ringing up for $.50 each and the register beeped when I gave the coupon, so I didn’t have any luck however the Hershey’s candy bars deal did work.
The TP scenario doesn’t work… same issue already listed, the cashier I had was VERY slow, inspected every item and every coupon, so I didn’t ask her to take them back off my order as I was looking for an unadvertised deal, but man did I want to!!! The saving grace is that I was using a $3 RR from trail mix that I made a $1 due to MQ, so I guess my dollar profit went to TP that my DH will complain about! LOL I did get more free pantyliners that I have no clue when I’ll use (I’m nursing) and 9 symphony bars for a net after RR exchanges of $1.73, all in all it was still a good trip… now I’ll have to go back again to see if I can find the Ghiradelli bars!
i work at walgreens and the reason the tp, soup, vit c, and klenexx are ringing up at the sale price without the coupon is because about a month ago we are now doing a “door buster” program. with that ever week certain items will no longer need the coupon listed in the ad. it will ring up the sale price. you should also notice these items will be on an end stand in the front (should be the one to the right of promo aisle).
also i’m sorry that some people have terrible cashiers!! come to my walgreens we are told we are one of the friendliest staffs around!
the idea is, is that once you’ve been shopping at walgreens, that you have 2$ in register rewards to spend, and then get 2$ in RR back. thus, just trading the RR you have for a newer one that expires later. if you’re just starting out, then you don’t have one.
but if you view it as an investment, that if you spent 2$ today and try to use it in a smart way, then you can trade it every time you shop at walgreens.
In Southern Ca, the price in the system is .50 the sale price so my cashier wouldn’n even take the coupon.
The progresso soups had the coupon price already in the register but the tuna did not. I wonder one thing—on the soups, for instance, where it says limit 4—in the past cashiers would override the limits with an in-ad coupon (if you got a nice cashier) so I wonder if now they will not be able to do this?
Just wanted to note about the RRs…my “favorite” cashier and manager at “my” Walgreens told me that the Register Rewards may have an expiration date on them, but they will scan up to 2 weeks after that date. You may want to check at your store, but this should be universal.
I came across these deals at Walgreens. I have a $1/1 coupon(I forget what insert, but it expires 9/30) for True North nut snacks. They are on sale for $3 and the RR are $3. Also, Listerine is on sale for $2.99 and RR are $2. For a $2/1 coupon go here, http://www.listerine.com/product-total-care.jsp?utm_campaign=Branded%20General&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=Purchase%20Terms&utm_term=listerine%20coupon
Personally, I love having the items at the sale price without the coupons. That way, when I’m close to my coupons vs items limits, I have a few more extra items to put register rewards against without using fillers. Wahoo!
hey Michelle,
what u said is right..technically we end up paying the tax on the amount before coupons for the product u’re buying.
here’s an example with RR’s
say a product costs $3 like u said and you have a $1 off coupon for that product and it produces a $2 RR.The cashier first scans the product so it scans $3 + tax ..u hand the coupon ..it takes off $1 ..so u pay $2 + tax out of pocket…U get $2 RR..
RR’s are equvalent to store cash with an expiration date and ofcourse with a limitation that u have to use that RR in that particular store…the product is free+tax because u get ur $2 back in the form of RR which can be used like cash (with limitations ofcourse)..it’s totally ur choice to decide whether u’re comfortable with the RR’s and having to deal with them or not…
let’s just say that the next time u go in u buy a product that costs $2 and produces a $2 RR..then this time u pay with ur RR +tax and still get to keep the new $2 RR ..now the product only costs u the tax..
hope this is helpful
Wow – I feel so stupid. I just tried to get the free toilet paper at our local Walgreens and when the cashier refused to take my coupon, saying that the discount was already programmed into their system, I insisted that it should be free – not $2 for 4 toilet paper rolls. They called the manager who came over and was very polite, but they kept looking at me like I was crazy – until I looked down at the “coupon” and realized ours was 2 for$1 not $1 off 2. I walked out without making a purchase and will have a difficult time showing my face there again. Next time, I’ll have to remember that Walgreens coupons differ by region (I guess) and actually read my “coupon” more carefully!
Same story as everyone else…my WG would not take the coupon for the tp. So if anyone from my area is reading this WG in Lancaster, Ohio wouldn’t give you free tp.
to make all the TP shoppers fill better…..I lined my children up with four rolls each…I was too embrassed to put them back so I bet I bought more or those 50 cent rolls than the rest of you :>…..I did score 60+ cans of chef michael dog food for $3.30 by accident 30 minutes later at Rite Aid….which made me feel much better about the TP :>.
have a question-I know you can’t roll a RR into another RR for the same item or another RR won’t print out, but can you roll one RR into a new, different RR item and still get the new RR to print out?
Jeanette, I agree that the sale price ringing up without the coupon is great, because that’s one less thing to fumble with at the register. But just wanted to point out that walgreens coupons, including those in the ad, do not count against your coupon-to-item ratio.
my walgreens coupon was for 2/1, not $1 off 2
and the chocolate rang up at full price. bummer
