Baking is one of my favorite activities. Thanks so much for the pita recipe link. I was wondering if you have any tips on how to save money on flour, both whole wheat and white. I know it’s still much cheaper to bake your own than buy ready made, but I don’t often find deals on these staples. Thanks for all your encouragement.

I don’t know how to post on here yet, but here is a link for some really good publix coupons.

Does your younger daughter do well eating raw vegetables? Mine is almost 22 months but doesn’t do well with raw vegetables. She does have her molars in. When I saw your menus I wondered if she is able to eat them or if you do something different for her.

If you have extra bananas this recipe is amazing: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Banana-Chocolate-Chip-Muffins-101020
I bake it substituting whole wheat flour for half the flour amount and sometimes add wheat germ. I’ve substituted yogurt for the milk before too. It always turns out great!

I need to find a waffle iron. Baking in 90 degrees doesn’t sound appealing here – thought waffles wouldn’t be bad! 🙂

I am going to bake. It’s been so hot I haven’t done alot of bulk baking lately. But today is a rainy, overcast day. And I’m having an easy dinner (Salmon Caesar Salad) and I was going to bake a cake to go with it. So I am going to bake cake, sourdough bread, and try to make English Muffins. Here’s a link to the English Muffin Recipe:
http://www.cdkitchen.com I’ve never made them so I hope they turn out. If they do it’ll save us a lot of money!

I was wondering if you were going to repost any of your recipes that you had on your other blog? I had alot of your baked goods bookmarked and now they are gone.

When you have time, can you repost your banana bread recipe. It is my favorite recipe. I used to always reference it on your other blog. Thanks in advance.

Hi Crystal,
I started reading this website a few months ago and it’s great. I am starting to work on our food budget and since my 4 kids are slightly older than yours and we live in a more expensive area of the country that you, I expect our food budget to be a little more than yours. But, I am using yours as a starting basis. However, I am a little confused about some things. You said you were making homemade bread and that you buy wheat from Whole Foods and yeast from Sam’s club. I haven’t seen you post any details about buying these lately. Do you buy in bulk? Are these included in your $40 a week food budget? Also, do you get produce from other sources? You mention that you are having tossed salads a few times this week, but I didn’t see you buy any tomatoes for a couple of weeks. I would appreciate any information you can give me on building a food budget. Thanks!

Money Saving Mom here: Real quickly, I buy yeast in bulk once a year from Sam’s and I am currently not grinding my flour because we moved and I have yet to find a nearby inexpensive source for buying wheat berries so I’m just using flour I already have on hand that I purchased from the store. (I didn’t bake anything for close to two months because of Silas being born and my freezer being so stocked, so haven’t purchased baking supplies for awhile!) And yes, I buy the wheat/flour/yeast from our grocery budget.
As far as produce, we can only plant a container garden where we are renting, so we have planters with lettuce and tomatoes in them. We’re using those for our salads, along with bits of other veggies we have in the fridge.
Hope that helps!

When you have time can you post your homemade pizza dough recipe? The link in one of your previous post is broken (it is pointing to one of the blog you are no longer maintaining)
Thanks!

I may be joining you for a “mini baking day”. I am going to try out your waffle recipe and make Super Power Muffins. I think you made those on a previous baking day and my kiddos loved them. I will inventory my pantry and see if there is anything else I can make ahead.

I think you have inspired me to having a baking day tomorrow! I am really curious about the homemade pita pockets. I have never tried this before but I think I will give it a try. Can you freeze them?
