I can’t tell you how much I L.O.V.E this magazine, show, cookbook – everything!
I’d been a regular subscriber to Taste of Home and, while I still love TOH, I actually read and use Cook’s Illustrated more. It tells the novice cook like me WHY they add certain ingredients or use certain techniques. (And also why they didn’t use other ingredients or techniques). This has really helped me learn the science of cooking and its processes, so that I can experiment more and even start cooking without a recipe all the time.
Plus, I love Chris Kimble’s bow ties and dry sense of humor!!!! His PBS show is way more educational and interesting than any Food Network show.
I can also vouch for Cook’s Illustrated. We just had a Texas BBQ brisket yesterday for Easter dinner that was so delicious. They usually will offer a 14 day free trial pass to their online membership.
I highly recommend doing this! We LOVE Cook’s Illustrated/America’s Test Kitchen. As long as you follow the directions, the recipes come out great, the FIRST time. I’ll even make their recipes for company when I haven’t tried them before–that’s how confident I am! Get the trial membership and print off a bunch of recipes that look good to you and give them a try!
For as long as I have known about CI, they have offered a 14 day trial membership. The difference seems to me is that with the 24hr, you don’t have to give out any other info than your email address.

By the way, I Cook’s Illustrated is one of my favorite recipe sources.
