I'm not a huge fan of warehouse clubs myself because I've found that I can usually beat their prices by quite a bit shopping sales and using coupons. However, if you were planning to become a member of Sam's Club anytime soon, if you join between January 15-21, 2009, you'll receive a free $25 gift card. This extra incentive might make it worth the cost of a membership. Go here for more details.

My mom got the coupons and I went to Wal-Mart for her since she was in your same shoes. With the coupons, the converter will cost about $10 at Wal-Mart. The coupons are for $40 dollars and you need to make sure you get ones that are atsc and ntsc compatiable. This is to ensure that you get all your stations if you are not currently subscribed to a cable system. If you subscribe to cable, you should not need a converter. According to the cable provider I use, they will convert the digital back to standard format for their users. If you need more information, use this website – https://www.dtv2009.gov/
Hope that was able to help a little.
We got 2 converter box coupons during the summer, but discovered all stores in the area had been sold out for months. The coupons came with suggested online sites from which to order that accepted the coupons. That’s what we did. Unfortunately, the boxes ended up costing around $25 each AFTER the coupons. When we hooked them up, the picture was perfect — like having cable! However, one turned out to not operate correctly and the remote for the other one stopped working after 4 months. Returning them was too much of a hassle, which I’m sure was their intent. It seemed to us that the retailers (at least online retailers) were scamming consumers. We plan to get another box from a local retailer after the DTV transition is made. We suspect the prices will be much lower without the coupon and returns will be easier.
Thanks to your website I am spending less and less at Costco these days and getting a better deal using coupons/sales. However, there are still some things that I cannot find cheaper/better elsewhere and make it worth the annual membership. My “faves:”
gasoline (I get a 5% rebate using my Amex card)
milk
coffee (probably could find cheaper but I won’t skimp on my coffee!)
produce
butter
There are some other things I get from time to time, esp. if I need it and can’t find cheaper elsewhere.
I would be curious what other readers “can’t live without” from their membership warehouse stores.
My husband heard a news feed on NPR radio that the government program supporting the converter box coupons has run out of money. These coupons, if you have them, may not work. Might want to check with your store first!
Yes there are certain things I always buy at Sam’s Club. For starters we get together with some friends and buy a case of 90% lean ground beef for about $2/lb (chub club co-op we like to call it!). They pack it in 10 lb. chubs so I divide it up and freeze it. Here are a few other “deals” I always get at Sam’s–one little disclaimer–I rarely do coupons and live in a city w/o any “double coupon” deals and I’m just getting into the internet world of coupons/deals so I’m not sure how those compare but I’ve done some fairly good cost comparisons and here’s what I’ve found:
Organic Spinach and baby greens (about 1/2 price at Sam’s)
Feta Cheese–I keep this around for salads–about 1/2 the price
Bulk Cheddar & Mozzerella
Milk and Eggs and yes, butter are usually a bit cheaper
Sam’s Detergent (powder kind)–called Wind Fresh or something like that
Oxy Clean
Dishwasher Detergent–about 1/2 the price
Wipes
Trash Bags (I like the kind w/the 4 flaps you tie together–probably more than 1/2 the price at Sam’s)
Toothbrushes–about $1
Deodorant–my husband’s–cheapest I’ve found
Seasonal Produce can sometimes be a STEAL (Cherry Berries and other tomatoes) and be frozen (blueberries, strawberries…)
Whole wheat bread
tortillas
Sausage
Chicken (pieces and whole)
Salsa
**Spices**much cheaper at Sam’s
Tea & coffee
the list goes on…my suggestion check it out but be sure to do the research yourself b/c some things are NOT cheaper : ) I have pretty much stopped purchasing meat at the grocery store b/c Sam’s is almost always cheaper–down side is that you have to buy in bulk but a deep freezer helps and I think it’s worth it.
Happy Shopping!
We are members at Sams Club. Wonder if I can renew for this gift card?
I think I save money on things like contacts and tires that I wouldn’t save at other places.
Also we have recently discovered we like their milk better than the walmart brand at walmart and it is cheaper. We are fortunate to live close to Sams so a quick trip for 1-2 things is easy.
