I tried this yesterday and must have been given a bad code because it didn’t work.
Just now I tried again with $7.98 in my cart. I punched in the code and it took $7.98 off.
I don’t know if it is a computer error or if the code is worth more than it states but my cart is showing a balance of $0.00.

Either way, thanks for fowarding on a usable code!

Songs Kids Love to Sing: Sunday School Songs
id # 53711780
Price $4.99 before coupon (FREE after coupon)

To find this CD put the id# in the search field and choose music as what you are searching for.

There are SO VERY MANY choices near or under $5 it is a bit overwhelming but one great thing about looking for music on Borders.com is that you can listen to clips of nearly every CD they have for sale.

For the homeschoolers out there, I also saw some interesting CD’s that sang math songs. They seemed just a bit advanced for my 4 year old but I was tempted.

If anyone tries to order anything that’s over $5, there’s a catch to this offer: it’s only applicable if there isn’t a better online discount. There was a book I wanted and it was 30% off online, so I would have saved $6.75 and the coupon code wouldn’t give me another $5 off. So it wasn’t in my budget then! Boo! Thanks for the tip though! Everyone will just want to stick with $5 and under items!

There is a book called Buy It For Less that is 3.98. I had to laugh at that one. I found a lot of kids books for 5.95. I also found a Christian hits CD “for kids”. It’s probably like the Kids Bop CD’s you see on TV. It was 7.95 but it would make a good stocking stuffer for $3.

5 Melynda July 25, 2008 at 10:14 am

I figured it out. The code takes off $5 per book. I am not sure if it is supposed to or not but my cart is still at $0.00 even with 4 books under $5 each added. However, when I added a book for more than $5 it only took $5 off of it.
That is a pretty good deal considering they have quite a few kids books for under $5!

I got all the way through the process with my $4.99 Dr. Seuss boardbook. My cart read $0.00. Yet when I finally hit submit, it said, “We’re sorry. This feature is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.”

I also confirmed that you could use this for multiple items under $5.00. I can’t imagine that this is what they intended though. It doesn’t really matter, because I can’t even complete an order right now.

My 11-month old loves the “Baby Faces” series of board books by Roberta Grobel Intrater, so I just bought 6 of them at $4.95 each, used the promo code and “ship to store” and we are getting 6 fabulous books for free! Thank you for you posting this great info!

13 Valarie July 25, 2008 at 10:58 am

it appears to be per book. However, I was unable to complete my order as long as my total order was $0.00. Once I added a more expensive book (on I had been waiting to buy), I was able to checkout with no problem. I’m now well stocked on little golden books ($2.99 each) for gifts.

I was going to purchase a CD for under $5, but found that you do still have to pay for shipping. If you want to get an item for less than $5, paying $2.98 for shipping really cuts into your savings!

Technically, you can get as many books as you want for free, as long as they are under $5 and shipped to the store. My question is, should we take advantage of this or not? I am just not sure that is what they intended this to do. What do you think Crystal?

I called Borders and everyone is trying to do the same thing. The customer service lady was really helpful and esplained that their computer’s won’t let them do it totally for free but she could get me a cheap book if I wanted. i didn’t have time to search but I suggest if you want to do it you find a book for $5.99 then try. It won’t be free but it will be cheap!

21 Finance Girl July 25, 2008 at 11:35 am

Apparently so. About 15 minutes ago, I had 12 books in my cart for $0. It wouldn’t go through. So I tried adding another book to make my total over $0. Still wouldn’t work. It said it wouldn’t allow me to place my order because of current technical difficulties. So, yeah, I’m guessing they figured it out. Darn… I was about to have enough Dr. Suess books for all the first birthday parties I’ll be attending in the next few years.

It worked for me. I ordered “The Worn Out Woman: When Life is Full and Your Spirit is Empty”. I’m looking forward to your series on it and wanted to read along. The first time I tried it didn’t work, so I closed the window and re-opened another window then it worked. Of course I still owe money, but it was cheaper than even Amazon and there’s no shipping since I’m picking it up at a local Borders.

I haven’t tried placing an order yet with the coupon code (working on it), but just a heads up…this problem with checking out isn’t a new issue. I actually tried to place an order several days ago for some stuff for medical school, and I was getting the same error message about the feature not being available. Emailing customer care got no response, so I finally had to call and have the order placed over the phone. That error has been up at the very least since last Sunday, and apparently they haven’t managed to fix it yet…

33 Heather July 25, 2008 at 2:03 pm

I don’t know if someone else has posted this already, but you can do your own search for any kind of books you want on their website and then choose to sort by Prices:Low to High. For example, I searched “Disney” and then sorted them by price and found a bunch of Disney Little Golden Books for $2.99. You don’t have to use the link posted above!

34 Jeanette July 25, 2008 at 2:17 pm

I just did it and got $6.24 off my purchase of $6.24.

[Reply]

36 Amphritrite July 25, 2008 at 2:37 pm

Here’s how I did it:

1. Selected “Books”
2. Selected “Romance”
3. Selected “Paperback”
4. Selected “Under $10″
5. Sorted by Price, Lowest to Highest
6. Picked the under $5s that I wanted (confirmed: Coupon works on ALL books)
7. Chose two $5.50 books (I could have chosen one, but they were a series)
8. Chose pickup at the store
9. Paid $1 for seven books

I, too, got the error when I had $0 in my cart, but the moment I added one of those $5.50 books, it was smooth sailing. Even if it’s not -free-, $.14 a book is not a bad price.

And when I’m done, I’ll donate them to the library and get to take the full amount as a donation on my taxes.

I had tried for hours and I decided to do a small order(about 6 books) using my husbands email instead of mine and it worked for some reason. I then returned and tried the previous order using my email and I STILL couldn’t get it to work. I don’t know how the different email address could change anything but it worked!

*news flash* :)

I’ve been trying to place my order all day (tried through my Borders account, as a guest, with 0.00 balance, with over 0.00 balance), and nothing seems to work. I called Borders to find out what was going on, because like I said in an earlier comment, I’ve had problems since Sunday with the site. The customer service rep said that they have been told that the site will be up and running properly no later than Monday (she’s keeping her fingers crossed). However, if you are lucky enough to manage to get through the majority of the checkout process and get a pending order number, you can call them and they can try to push it through on their side. Key word here is “try.” She told me to call right away in the morning because as the day goes by, the site gets slower and slower from people using it (hmmm…maybe they should have fixed this before the launch, loll). Also, during the day, they take the site “down” to work on it. I’m going to try again tomorrow *sigh*.

Oh, and in case anyone wants to call Customer Care, here’s the info:
From US: 800.770.7811
Outside of the US: 615.287.1704

Hours:
Monday – Friday 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM CST
Saturday and Sunday 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM CST

I just took it off their website :)

Or arest em for steal books when I go to pick up my order instore LOL. This seems like a too good to be true situation. Don’t give up! My computer locked up a few times but I went to my cache and was able to access an old cart page and when I checked out my current items in cart popped in even though they were not displayed. Just a word of caution: Using this code to get a number of books for almost nothing could likely result in your order being cancelled as I am guessing this is not what Borders intended.

This does still work- but you have to chose books above $5 each. I called customer care and the lady said it is only valid on items $5 and over, and only one per order. So I ordered one book with her that was originally $12.99. Then I went back online and ordered 5 books, all over $5, and went through with taking $5 off each one. This was done at 1:45 pm CST.

[Reply]

81 cara July 26, 2008 at 1:55 pm

The coupon code was intended to be $5 off your total order, and not $5 off each item under $5. It was a glitch and Border’s told me that any order that got through before it was caught were being cancelled. Bummer!

**You may have made a purchase without realizing it, if you were able to get far enough in the process to enter credit/debit info.

I was able to check out this morning (10:15 Eastern time) with the promo code…..although I didn’t realize I HAD checked out (kept getting error/try-again-later messages) until I saw that my bank account had been debited, twice. Oops.

Their system is still down and customer service is backed up.

If you tried to place an order last night or early this morning, please be aware that it may have gone through, even if your shopping cart is still full or your order status is empty. CHECK your debit or credit accounts! Or if you did a free order with store delivery, keep checking your email or Borders Order Status to see if it went through.

I have not received a confirming email, and when I called customer service to cancel my duplicate order, my orders hadn’t even shown up on their system yet, so I have to call back.

Yes mine was canceled too. :( They said that it is canceled because I canceled it or the items are not in…..I think they just figured out the glitch.

Just a heads up for those of you who didn’t get your order to work: check and make sure you weren’t charged anyway. I was checking my bank account this morning and I was charged three times even though I never got the sale “finalized”. I haven’t been able to get through to customer service yet either!

I just did the deal. It took me forever to get it to work but it finally went through after I deleted a bunch of stuff, made sure they were all items that ship within 24 hours, and were a multiple of one. I also had it shipped to the store. I really don’t know what I ordered after so much deleting. I guess my confirmation e-mail tells me that, I am just too tired to think about it anymore! Anyways, thank you so much for the post! Oh yeah, I tried to enter the code one more time to see if I could just do a smaller order and it says I already used the code. Interesting…

Cara, thanks for the heads up. I just checked my credit card and although I only thought I had ordered twice (I only have 2 confirmation emails and only got through to the end of ordering process twice) there are five charges on my account. I think I’ll just see what they do as it sounds like they are canceling orders anyway. Worst case scenario I will end up with some duplicate books that I can use as gifts I guess.

I am so glad that I found this. Went through put 8 books on my list checked out. It took 2 tries but it went though and got 8 books for 5o cents. Thats just crazy, would have cost 33 bucks.

This was fabulous! I just bought $37.96 in books for $7.96! I found 8 books, 3 for fun, 5 that I’ve been wanting to buy. All of the Patricia St. John books were available (I’ve been trying to find them at used bookstores for months), and I was able to buy them for between $1-$3 each. No, that’s not free, but it’s better than I’d find at a used bookstore and these will be new! Thank you, thank you, thank you! My daughter’s birthday shopping is done!

The way it worked — anything less than $5 was free and then it took $5 off anything over that. I filled my cart, entered the promo code, it discounted my total, and I paid with no difficulty. Maybe some of those glitches from earlier have been worked out!

Wow, as if I hadn’t already wasted an alarming amount of time on this with nothing to show for it…I checked my bank account and even though I never got any kind of confirmation (and thought I never got a single sale to go through) there are two identical charges. Oh, and customer service is closed.

I’m sorry, but I don’t think that using this code is dishonest or unethical. Perhaps it is not what Borders intended, but it is not our job to determine their intentions. Also, unless you are making multiple orders, the code is still only being used once per person – it is just applying itself toward multiple books.

I think it is up to each individual to determine whether they are comfortable with taking advantage of the deal, and we should not be judging others’ decisions.

It just worked for me not 5 minutes ago. I did buy a pricey book that I really really wanted also. The code took 5 dollars off that book and I “bought” 4 other kids books that were regularly priced under $5, which all came up free ($23.96 in savings). I wanted to keep adding books since my son is such a Magic Tree House fan, but the site started getting buggy and I worried it wouldn’t work anymore so I quit there. My book was enough to get free home shipping, so now I don’t even need to take the bus up to the store.

It worked for me! I have a whole selection of Little Golden books (and a Mo Willems book- I couldn’t resist) to give to the kids for the holidays. All for $ 1.99 and a short trip to our local store to pick up. Thank you!!!

Update: I received an email that my order has been shipped to the store today though it looks like a partial order the savings seem to be applied right. I entered the code into my laptop today and it still works for me off each item. It no longer works on the computer I originally placed the order on so I guess it it once per computer/customer?

Is anyone having luck with this this morning (Monday)? It looked like it was going to work for me and then I decided to change something in my order…big mistake. Now I’m getting that “try again later” message.

I had placed an order for 12 books for a total of $2.99 after the discount – which is what they charged my card. I just got an email saying they had shipped 2 books to my store and that my order total was $0. Not sure if they cancelled the rest or not? I may call customer service later to find out.

Wow, the website is totally bogged down and will barely load up. I am betting there are so many people getting free books is why. Well I am gonna try for mine! These will make excellent christmas gifts.

It took me almost 10 hours to get through, but it worked. I ordered $84 in books, cds, and dvds and it will only cost me $12 in the end.

I’m Pacific Time so waiting until the evening helped a lot! Also once I had the order placed it refused my billing address, no matter what address I put in. So I left the browser open overnight, and in the morning hit send. Went right through.

I’m very excited as many of the devotional and inspirational books are far less than $5 so I was able to stock up on some secret sister gifts. I was also able to buy some christian baby books to use for baby showers.

Wow!

This is such a great deal! I haven’t shopped much at Borders, but I just recently got their (FREE) rewards card – got a 20% off coupon for that, AND now this. I think it’s great, and just these two experiences will definately cause me to consider Borders now for my book needs, so I think this promo they have done it actually a great marketing tool.

I just placed my order, and when I entered all my card info and hit the final submit button, I got the error, but after reading everyones tips here – I didn’t do anything but check my bank account and saw my $1.99 ( for 9 books!) was charged, so I am going to sit tight and wait for a confirmation email from Borders.

My son LOVES Magic Tree House and Henry and Mudge books, so I grabbed some of those, and one book for 6.99, making my 35+ order only $1.99!

And I am a Borders fan now for sure….

This is my first post so let me just say I love your website- I just recently found it online!

This was a great deal! And I was able to get 6 books for my son for only .99 cents it was great but unfortunately it was a fluke and Borders caught on. I tried it again today with a couple more classic books that I really wanted for me and the code now only gives $5 or less depending on your order off of the entire order total. I guess we were lucky to have at least gotten some of a deal.

This is driving me NUTS!! I think their site is just so overwhelmed right now but it seems like it is working okay right now.. However, on my check-out page, it is only taking one $5 off .. not one for every book ..did anyone else have this???

Please see the original post for details on this coupon. It is only supposed to take $5 off your order. It had a hiccup for a bit but is now fixed and working properly. So long as you order something for $5 or under and request to have it delivered to your store, you should be able to get it for free!

The code no longer works for more than one book. It still works for $5 off one book unless it is on a better sale. This has been an awesome link, thanks for the tip.
