Possible Free Coupon Inserts at Local Libraries – From Melissa:
I work at a library, but have been buying the Sunday paper for the
coupons for a while now. I finally asked at the front desk and found
out that I could be getting my coupons for free since they take them
out of the paper before shelving it. There are a few others who work
here who also are interested in some of the coupons, but they had THREE
SmartSource books full of coupons that were still available for me to
take. Some coupons were clipped already, but for being free, I can’t
complain.Your readers might want to check at their local libraries–including
university and college libraries–to see if they can get the coupons
from the newspapers.

Another mom at church was talking about the great items
she’s gotten entirely free through a national effort called Freecycle
Network. I was able to find my town on the yahoo
group pages, and now I get an email everytime someone has something to
give away, or a specific need for an item. It’s awesome! And free!
Is the 3 Months or 3,000 Miles Oil Change Thing a Myth? – From Lori:
My husband had been reading something online that said most
cars don’t need their oil changed as often as the "three months or
three thousand miles" that we often hear. Sure enough, when we looked
in the owner’s manual for our Honda Civic, it recommended changing the
oil every six months or 7500 miles. We were flabbergasted that we’ve
been wasting so much money (and so much OIL) for so long!
Return Your BPA Bottles for Gift Cards – From Heather:
My son has three Avent bottles that have BPA in them and we haven’t been using. Babies R Us/Toys R Us is accepting these bottles back and either giving you one BPA-free bottle in return for each bottle you bring in or store credit (no receipt necessary). I returned three at the Toys R’ Us yesterday (I had received them at my baby shower and didn’t have a gift receipt, but it wasn’t a problem) and got a gift card in the amount of the retail price of the bottles. It may work with other brands as well.

My library has a designated “box” they put the newspaper inserts in, so every time I am there I sit down and see if there’s anything I want. They have done this for at least the past 20 years. If your library doesn’t offer this service, ask them! It’s a nice community service and the moms can go throughthte coupon while the kids are at story hour or checking out there own books.
Amsoil has oil for 25,000 mile/1 year changes. You have to buy it though a dealer, but it saves you lots of money in the long run!
I’m located in Alexandria, VA, and shop at Giant grocery store (not sure if these exist outside the DC area). This week they are offering 5 12-packs of Coke brand products for $12. You have to buy 5 to get the deal. Each one is normally 10 points on mycokerewards.com, but because of the double point day, they’re 20. You can then redeem the 100 points you get for them for a free coupon for a 12 pack, which means you’d essentially be getting 6 12-packs for $12. That works out to about $0.17/can. This is, of course, assuming you have room to store 6 12-packs of soda.
I just started using free cycle and love it! I recently picked up 350 feet of baseboard – more then enough to finish our last room. We may have enough to upgrade our living room base too! It would of cost us over $150.00 to complete this project.
Another note on oil changes…The longer time is generally for “easy on the car” driving such as strict highway driving. Check your manual again for the other maintenance schedule for hard/heavy driving in bad conditions. It will probably still say 3,000 miles. I say get the opinion of the dealer or your qualified, trusted neighborhood mechanic. I generally go 4,000 miles which is barely over 3 months for me, so it is heavier than the “standard” mainenance schedule of 7500 miles
I just called my local Babies R Us and they are not doing the bottle exchange (since it is not an official US recall item), but my local Toys R Us is. They will take used bottles, they just asked that they are clean. I would advise to call ahead since it seems like not every BRU and TRU is participating.
Does anyone know if BRU/TRU will take back used Advent bottles?? I have about 30 of them and I would love to get credit for them.
I have several Avent bottles… is there something to look for on the bottles to know which ones are recalled? or they are taking back???
I returned a ton of Dr. Browns bottles to BRU a few weeks ago and ended up having over $85 in store credit – which they told me could be used for anything, not just bottles! I had all my bottles in very good order with every piece of the bottle present ( I think they require that you have all pieces to the bottles for the credit). It was a great way to get new bottles for nothing!
Two free tacos at Jack in The Box thursday June 26th when you bring in a gas reciept.
Re: the recommended oil change schedule as recommended in vehicle manuals put out by the manufacturers.
We have always changed our oil at 3,000 to 4,000 miles, just as I use one-third to one-half of the amount of laundry detergent recommended by the manufacturer. It is to the advantage of auto makers to NOT recommend the conservative approach, because the sooner a vehicle (or engine) wears out, the more money they stand to make when these are replaced. The same is true for just about any cleaner made, from shampoo to laundry detergent – the sooner you use it up, the sooner you’ll be purchasing more. If your hair or clothing or vehicle (or anything else) won’t be ruined by a more conservative approach, and if taking that conservative approach means that you are extending the life of the product, it makes sense to conserve your resources – ie, your money.
There ARE times when it makes sense to pay a bit more now and realize a big savings in the end.
Blessings,
Michelle
FYI- – After calling several stores it appears that Central Texas BRU/TRU are not taking back any bottles right now.
We have been “freecycling” for five years now! I love it and use it to give and get. Happy day!
