Note from Crystal: I have been told that most overseas commissaries will accept coupons for up to six months past their expiration date. Is this correct? I always save my expired coupons for a few months and then stuff them into a flat rate mailer and send them to a woman I know in Germany who distributes them to other families on the base there.

Crystal you are correct. Coupons are good at overseas commissaries for up to 6 months past the expiration date. That was the case when we were there two years ago and I don’t think it’s changed.
I have never heard of any commissaries in teh states accepting expired coupons. In fact that is the first thing mine checks! However, I have heard the overseas bit.
We are a Navy family and shopped at many commissaries around the country. I have never been allowed to use coupons past their expiration date.
As far as I know, it is only *overseas* commissaries that accept expired coupons. Sorry for failing to include that when I first posted. I’ve corrected the post. Thanks!
Hello! A friend of mine told me about this site and I’m so glad she did. Thank you for all these tips—I’ll definitely be a returning reader! in Christ, Gin
Re: library alerts — my local library system sends me email reminders a couple days before my books are due, and also emails me when hold requests come in. I just had to provide them with my email address (they didn’t ask for it when I first got a card). You can check with your local library to see if this is a service they provide.
Great to learn about someone who can use expired coupons. I have often looked at my pile of purged coupons at the end of the month and wished that I didn’t have to just throw them away. And now I don’t! I am especially pleased for a way to be able to help those who are serving our country. Just one question–do they only want manufacturer’s coupons (i.e. from newspaper inserts, etc.) or can they use internet printables as well?
Do they need expired formula checks too?
Thanks for the library elf tip! I just signed up. What a lifesaver that will be this summer with 2 kids devouring books everyday – and me also!
Great tip on the expired coupons!
Commissaries overseas accept them for up to 6 months past the experation date.
I was always told that overseas commissaries would accept coupons for up to 6months past the expiration date, however when i visited the website last night it said up to 2months past the expiration date.
Thanks you so much money saving mom for posting about the expired coupons!
This is from the website and should help with any question you may have.
Expired Coupons?
2 Months Max! Yes expired coupons are accepted. We recommend not sending any coupons older than 2 months expired on the date of shipment. They can use them for a couple of months after that but remember that the volunteers at the base must process the coupons once they arrive and get them out to be used. We also need to leave enough time for them to have the families sort through them and find the ones they want for use.
I just started sending coupons to the overseas coupon program. I did a lot of research before starting, and they can use manufacturer’s coupons up to six months post expiration. However, they ask that you not send them coupons post two months expiration as they need time to sort them, hand them out, etc! It’s amazing how quickly they add up, and knowing we can be a blessing to someone else is a great feeling!
http://thehappyhousewife.com/thank-you/ Toni is a military wife who also collects and distributes expired coupons to military families overseas. The only difference is, that as a military wife herself, she tries to connect directly with the families. She will take coupons expired after the 2-month mark, too.

Hi Crystal-
Military commissaries do accept coupons up to 6 months past the expiration date. Just an FYI Hawaii is not considered an overseas location. Commissaries also accept internet printed coupons, it is an official policy and can be viewed on their website. The official commissary coupon policy can be viewed at

I do have a program on my site to connect families in the states with military families overseas who need coupons. I have received thousands of coupons so far and am distributing them all over Europe.
Blessings~

Overseas commissaries will accept them at up to 6 months past the expiration date, and some will accept them up to a year. Our mini-commissary in Bad Nauheim takes them at 12 months past expiration.

I LOVE library elf – it is a lifesaver for a family with 7 library cards!!
All military commissaries overseas only will accept coupons for 6 months past the expiration date. It may be that some will accept them longer than that. The commissaries I have been to don’t. The thing where it says up to 2 months past the expiration date is for groups who send their expired coupons directly to the commissary itself. Commissaries take these and sort them and then when the cashiers are not busy they tape them to the product that it can be used for. They only do this as they have time to do so, and this is why they don’t want them more than 2 months past the expiration date because they have problems with their customers if the coupon that the store taped to the item is more than 6 months expired. When the individual shopping presents coupons to the cashier, they will be accepted up to 6 months past the expiration date. Your commissary should have their coupon policy prominently displayed when you first enter the store. And yes, formula coupons as well as all baby item coupons are especially welcome. One reader mentioned formula checks and I am unsure what she means by this. If it is WIC checks I would be surprised if they did, but I don’t know as I do not qualify for the program. Perhaps a mother who is familiar with WIC can shed some light on the subject. Some WIC offices have coupon boxes outside of their office for the ladies to sift through while waiting for their appointments.
