Site update and feed issues

by crystal on May 30, 2008

The transfer from Blogger to Typepad is almost complete. Most links in posts should now be fixed and almost all of the features from the old blog have been added back in.

I decided to only transfer over the "meatier" posts and those deal posts which were still relevant. I have around 30-40 more posts yet to transfer over so if some of the categories seem rather lean right now, they’ll be beefed up in the next few weeks.

It’s been a rather tedious process and taken all of my spare time over the last week; I am ever so ready to be done so I can get back to normal blogging and real-life! But it’s been a great learning experience, too, and I’ve enjoyed the new challenges it has presented.

I have figured most everything out in the transfer process but transferring my feed. I had over 3000 subscribers to my last feed and I’m really not anxious to lose them all. However, everything I’ve read and tried regarding the transfer of feeds doesn’t appear to be working. In fact, I’m not even sure that the new Typepad feed is working correctly.

If you are subscribed to this blog via a feed reader and you do get this post in your reader, could you take a moment to comment and let me know what feed reader you are using and what feed you are subscribed to? (The old feed or the new feed?)

Also, if anyone has any great pointers on transferring/re-directing feed, I’m all ears. I tried transferring it through Blogger, through Feed Burner, and through Typepad. None of these seemed to do the trick, but I may have just overlooked something somewhere in my technical novicity (hmm, did I just make up a new word?).

And would you believe it? Just yesterday afternoon, when I had finished the final touches of straightening things out here on this new blog and was starting to feel more at-ease with Typepad, lo and behold, Blogger unlocked my old blog! There’s no turning back now, though, and I’m really happy I made the change; Typepad is fast becoming my favorite blogging platform.

And so ends my bizarre blogging saga; thanks for sticking it out with me over the ups and downs of the last two weeks. You all deserve some sort of award for "Most Patient Blog Readers of the Century." Since I can’t personally deliver it to each one of you, I’ll just have to make sure and serve up a whole lotta great deals over the next fifty years to make up for it. :)

i’m using the new feed on feedreader 3.13 and it loaded fine for me.

Monica May 30, 2008 at 12:58 pm

Hi Crystal,

I subscribe via Bloglines and receive your new feed just fine. I am subscribed to the new feed as the old one was not bringing anything new in, so I just deleted it and typed your new one in.

Thank you for all of your effort on this site – I like to think of all the money being saved by all of us readers out there storing up beautiful jewels for your crown in heaven! :)

Love,
Monica

I used to get your old feed but it did in fact stop working. I have since gone to the new blog and used the subscribe to feed button. I get the feed through outlook. Hope this helps.
Thanks for posting!
Heather

Hey, Crystal. I subscribe to your blog — the new feed. As far as WHAT I use…I don’t have a clue. I use Thunderbird as my mail client and I installed Forumzilla. I *think* that’s what I use. If it’s super important to you, I’ll double check.

Thanks providing a way for me to subscribe through a feed — it’s the easiest way to really keep up with all your great work!

annie May 30, 2008 at 1:59 pm

I subscribe with Bloglines and have never updated your feed and it’s coming through fine. The last time your feed had problems I just left it alone, since I wasn’t really using my feed reader for you at the time anyway. Somehow it fixed itself and your posts started coming through again, so I did the same thing when you moved to Typepad. There was about a week when I wasn’t getting anything from you in Bloglines, but then all the posts came through and I’ve been getting them regularly ever since.

So yay. :) Just wanted to let you know.

Stacy May 30, 2008 at 2:07 pm

I use bloglines and get the feed for moneysavingmom.com without any trouble

Bonnie Walker May 30, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Seems like a good time to de lurk! I really enjoy your blog and have just jumped on the CVS wagon and I couldn’t have done it without this blog!
Anyways, I use bloglines and the old feed stopped working and I happened to read the little message on the side, so I put the new feed into bloglines and it has worked since.

Thanks!

Melissa May 30, 2008 at 2:18 pm

I used the “subscribe to feed” button to subscribe to the new feed. The old feed wasn’t working anymore. I receive the new feed in Google Reader.

Thanks for sharing all the great deals!

Melissa

Melissa May 30, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Hi, I got the feed through Bloglines, I also had to delete the old one and subscribe to a new one; it claimed the old one still worked but I wasn’t getting the updates.

Brianna May 30, 2008 at 2:21 pm

I just subscribed yesterday and it’s your new feed which is working just fine. I’m using Google Reader. I did notice that it said there were only 19 people subscribed to this blog which surprised me. But I guess the changeover is the reason.

Melisa May 30, 2008 at 2:25 pm

I also use Bloglines and get everything fine. Thanks for all you do!

Matthew May 30, 2008 at 2:28 pm

It is working fine for me in Google Reader. I am using
http://feeds.feedburner.com/moneysavingmom/mNWf

Lucian's Mommy May 30, 2008 at 2:30 pm

I subscribed to your new feed here because I stopped getting the old feed. I use Google Reader.

Kate May 30, 2008 at 2:41 pm

I use Google Reader and subscribed to your feed this week. So far it works fine.

Renee May 30, 2008 at 2:41 pm

I also use Google and had to re-subscribe when you changed to Typepad.

Brushstrokes May 30, 2008 at 2:43 pm

I subscribe using IGoogle. I had to delete the old one and subscribe again to the new one – but the new one is working just fine.

Kyallee May 30, 2008 at 2:49 pm

The new feed is working fine using Firefox’s Live Bookmarks.

K May 30, 2008 at 2:50 pm

I subscribed to the new feed and still have the old feed in there too…I am receiving both. I use Bloglines.

older feed-
http://feeds.feedburner.com/MoneySavingMom

newer-
http://moneysavingmom.typepad.com/money_saving_mom/atom.xml

Heather L May 30, 2008 at 2:53 pm

I use Bloglines, and use this feed now (was using the old one, but switched when it didn’t work): http://moneysavingmom.typepad.com/money_saving_mom/atom.xml

theresa May 30, 2008 at 2:58 pm

Hi Crystal-
I resubscribed to your new feed in Google Reader once you set up the typepad site, and haven’t had any problems. This is what I use: http://feeds.feedburner.com/moneysavingmom/mNWf

Thanks for all your hard work!

Jenny M May 30, 2008 at 3:26 pm

I subscribed to the blogger site using Google Reader and then I re-subscribed to the typepad site…so I had double posts popping up in Google Reader for awhile. I just unsubscribed to the blogger feed so I am good to go. Working fine for me!!

Inca May 30, 2008 at 3:32 pm

I read your blog through Bloglines…
I never switch the subscription site and I did not miss any feeds as far as I can tell.

Robyn May 30, 2008 at 3:45 pm

sorry I am no tekky but i use google reader and added your new feed thru searching about a week ago? Then today or yesterday something you did sent about 10 posts thru the old feed, so I unsubscribed to that one and just have this one. No problems here actually.

Devildogwife May 30, 2008 at 3:45 pm

I’m subscribed to the new feed (old feed does not work) via Google Reader.

Richelle F May 30, 2008 at 3:58 pm

I use bloglines and I subscribed to the new feed because the old one hadn’t started updating yet. I haven’t deleted my old feed because of some things I still have bookmarked, but I got this post in both of them. They both seem to be working, although the new one updates a lot faster.

Laura May 30, 2008 at 4:24 pm

I use Google Reader and have been getting your new feed perfectly since you switched. (http://moneysavingmom.typepad.com/money_saving_mom/atom.xml)

Linnea May 30, 2008 at 4:47 pm

I’m so glad things are up and working again for you. One question…can you get your cute “Money Saving Mom” header over from Blogger? :) It was a really nice touch and would look great over here!

Thanks for all your help in being frugal and having fun at the same time!

Linnea

Ruth Ann May 30, 2008 at 4:50 pm

Hello Crystal -

I am subscribed in Outlook Express. For over a week when you couldn’t post and you were having all the troubles, I didn’t get the feed. Then you posted the note the other day that there was a new feed that needed to be signed up to.

Anyhow – all that to say that I subscribed to the new one but didn’t delete the old one. I am not getting everything to BOTH feeds…so both of them are working on my end. I’ll just have to cancel one now. :)

Hope this helps.

Ashley May 30, 2008 at 4:51 pm

I am subscribed to the old feed via Google reader.

Gerb May 30, 2008 at 5:17 pm

I use Google reader with the new feed at typepad and everything’s been working great.

Kara A. May 30, 2008 at 5:17 pm

I get your old feed through Bloglines without any problem. :)

I switched to Google Reader, and wasn’t receiving your old feed there, so subscribed to the new one. But that was a week or so ago…if I’d waited, maybe things would have ironed out themselves.

Glad you’re back to Blogland!!

Jenny May 30, 2008 at 6:09 pm

Hey there,

I subscribe using google reader and still have the old in there though nothing comes through and just subscribed to the new.

The old feed address is:
http://www.moneysavingmom.com

The new shows up as:
http://www.moneysavingmom.com/money_saving_mom/

That is probably what is doing it.

Hope you get it all settled.

Jenny

Melinda May 30, 2008 at 6:21 pm

I JUST started using Google Reader, and I guess I’m using the new feed.

Hugs,
Melinda

Kimberly May 30, 2008 at 6:21 pm

I use google… I still have your old feeds in there but they are not posting… I had to re-subscribe to the new one..

andrea May 30, 2008 at 6:33 pm

I use google reader. I’m subscribed to
http://feeds.feedburner.com/MoneySavingMom

Tammy L May 30, 2008 at 6:47 pm

I’m still subscribed to both of your feeds through Bloglines, and got this post through both feeds. :)

PollyS May 30, 2008 at 6:56 pm

I use Google Reader. I subscribed to a new feed and everything is great. Thanks for all you do!

Heather May 30, 2008 at 7:19 pm

i was subscribed to the old feed w/ google reader. it wasn’t working anymore, but it just started working again within the last day or two. i didn’t subscribe to the new feed… it just started appearing again. hope this helps!!

Maggie May 30, 2008 at 7:30 pm

I subbed to your new feed when you switched, I use google and it works fine.

Kelli May 30, 2008 at 7:49 pm

I subscribed to your new site with Google Reader and receive your posts no problem! Love your site!

Martha Hinkle May 30, 2008 at 8:19 pm

New feed. Google Reader.

Kaye May 30, 2008 at 8:40 pm

When you say “old” vs “new” feed, I’m not sure what you’re asking, but in case this is it–the feed I get is for the moneysavingmom.com (I’m guessing that’s typepad?). I use Google Reader.

Jason Christ May 30, 2008 at 9:40 pm

Out of curiosity, why did you choose TypePad over WordPress.com?

(I’m new here and getting the feedburner feed just fine in Google Reader, btw)

Darla - MK_Reseller May 30, 2008 at 10:44 pm

I am subscribed to the new feed through google reader.

The old feed (blogger) didn’t ever update – I had to go to your site to figure out where ya went. ;)

Risha May 30, 2008 at 11:34 pm

I have subscribed to your new feed using google reader. The old feed wouldn’t update.

Josie May 30, 2008 at 11:37 pm

Hi! I use Google’s feed reader to read your posts and it came through just fine. Thanks for all your work!

Suzie May 31, 2008 at 7:37 am

google reader for old and new blogs with no problems!

Naomi W. May 31, 2008 at 9:41 am

I subscribe through Bloglines and receive the new feed just fine. Thanks for all the hard work you’re putting into getting everything to run smoothly!

Sarah May 31, 2008 at 10:52 am

I use Google Reader and subscribed to the new feed as soon as you switched. I haven’t had any problems with getting your new posts.

Sarina May 31, 2008 at 11:00 am

I had just switched over to Google reader to read your feeds right before your blogger issues. I have ALL of them right now because I didn’t want to risk missing anything.

http://www.google.com/reader/view/feed/http%3A%2F%2Fmoneysavingmom.typepad.com%2Fmoney_saving_mom%2Fatom.xml seems to be about 5 hours behind
http://www.google.com/reader/view/feed/http%3A%2F%2Ffeeds.feedburner.com%2FMoneySavingMom

and http://www.google.com/reader/view/feed/http%3A%2F%2Fmoneysavingmom2.blogspot.com%2Ffeeds%2Fposts%2Fdefault
hasn’t updated since the 23rd so I think it’s safe to get rid of that one :)

This is how I drown in clutter, I don’t want to take the chance I will need the “old” thing :)

I’m afraid that I can’t offer help on how to switch, my feeds are very “point and click” if you are still struggling I can ask my DH to see if he knows how to fix it. Just email me :)

Rebecca May 31, 2008 at 1:18 pm

I get your new feed through Google Reader, no problems. The old blog address didn’t transfer, though.

Carrie May 31, 2008 at 1:43 pm

I use Google Reader and it did stop transmitting the old blog last week. I checked out your website because I figured it was a technical problem on my end (versus you quit blogging) and am now connected to the new blog and it is working fine.

Shelly May 31, 2008 at 3:38 pm

I use Google Reader. Signed up with the new feed since I wasn’t getting updates on the old one. You can’t shake me! :) Here’s to another 50 years!!!

Nancy White May 31, 2008 at 10:06 pm

I am subscribed through Google Reader to your new feed. Your old feed had stopped working 5/16 and I subbed again earlier this week.

Tamara Cosby June 1, 2008 at 7:50 am

I read through bloglines…not sure if that is even what you mean but there you go…and I am still getting feeds..

Cassie June 2, 2008 at 9:03 am

I subscribe through google and I get it fine. I have not had to change anything with your changeover.

hthr June 2, 2008 at 11:33 pm

I’ve been getting the feed for about 3 weeks via NetNewsWire….and love & appreciate all of it!
